OMG! Thanks for posting this, Katie.
3
The AKC is an abomination. The second they get their greedy paws on a dog breed it becomes tortured and mutilated. A ruined and terrible form of life. Dog Orcs.
4
A friend of my has a French bulldog that has cancer. It's really not a healthy breed at all.
5
@3 WORD!!

Thank you.
7
French Bulldogs cost an arm and a leg, too. 2Kish. No wonder they're overbred and milled.
9
we encourage potential owners to talk to their local vet before buying a dog to better understand what may be the best breed for them, learn more about responsible ownership and how to better understand a dogā€™s needs
Ha! Good luck with that one. Humans are unimaginably selfish and thoughtless. Dog owners are no different than the rest. They don't give one shit how uncomfortable their pet is, they only care that they (the owner) is pleasured.
10
French Bulldogs may have problems (...don't get me started on Australian Bulldogs... )
But they still haven't been recalled like the huge Pug Recall in '08, also primarily for health reasons.
12

Katie,
I found your article in bad taste and itā€™s obvious you have never seen the joy french bulldogs bring to their families. They are the most gentle, loving dogs. Sorry you think paying attention to your dog and not leaving them for hours at a time by themselves bothers you!!!
You should not have any dog at all if you plan to leave it alone all day.

The fact that you mention you are glad French bulldogs only live 8-10 years is disgusting as well as incorrect.

I have had French bulldogs for years!!!! No health problems and would never have any other dog. There is a place for all dogs in the right home. Glad the French bulldog is not in yours!!!!

13

Your article about frenchie is disgusting, shame on u,try to find something useful to do,how about cleaning toilets

14
Does this woman actually think there is any value whatsoever in this article? She's delusional. I hope you have a "real" job. You know what they say about opinions.....and her's ranks higher on the list than Frenchies do on the one from the AKC.
15
This article made you one of the top three assholes on earth. Thatā€™s awesome.

I taught my dog that things were food or not. Someone told him their wifeā€™s dog is food so he picked the dog up by the head, lowered his ears, and began trotting off to eat him beyond the reach of prying eyes. I had to tell him not food so he would set him down.

Ur dogs are trash
16
Jesus Christ, the hostility in response to this. Here I thought the worst offense in this article was intentionally linking to Pinterest.

(Good job on the outrage clicks, Katie. Seems to have worked.)
17
OK, I found it amusing that Katie Herzog would make a random, unrelated Martha Stewart reference in a story about French bulldogs and somehow miss how Martha Stewart would be relevant to such a story. If one were to conduct a survey, "Name a celebrity French bulldog owner," Martha Stewart would come out #1. That's a bit like doing a story about corgis and then comparing some other breed to Queen Elizabeth II.

I do have to agree with Ms. Herzog that Frenchies are an abomination. Can't help being fascinated by them though.
18
LOL'ing at the responses from 12, 13 and 14. Yeah, screw the health problems imposed on these creatures by ignorant selfish humans (like those in 12, 13 and 14). Their right to a smush-faced dog trumps any creature's right to breathe. Stupid humans.
19
Maybe, but at least Iā€™m very aware of her issues and I take the very best care of her. In return, she is a close buddy who has my back ( literally at night she puts her back right up to mine and takes up 3/4 of the bed lol). Anyway, I love that dog of mine, abnormalities or no. She gives me much joy.
20
it's the puppy mills that are the problem. that and puppy mill supporters who buy from pet stores who, no matter what lies they say, get all their dogs from puppy mills. ( hint: professional dog breeders is effing code for puppy mill) if they are selling their dogs at a freaking pet store or on the internet than they are a puppy mill with a 100 to 1,000 breeding dogs located more than likely in the midwest or Pennsylvania or Arkansas or Florida and they breed unhealthy dogs and intentionally breed them smaller and smaller. blame puppy mills ( legal, usda regulated puppy mills) and pet stores and impatient americans who must have a dog immediately and buy the cute pup on the internet.
21
Yep, outrage-click-bait.
22
Humans are garbage; must be a day that ends in "day".
23
great article..let's assume all French Bulldogs have every problem you listed and all live terrible lives filled with constant suffering. Lets also believe every word on Wikipedia is true. We'll also assume every owner is a selfish asshole, and while were at it, let's kill off all the french bulldogs cuz they're an abomination!

You're not accomplishing anything with this article. Try harder to focus on the real problem rather than shaming owners and the breed itself.
25
ā€œfarting, snoring, and slobbering at workā€, and I thought that was the job description for stranger reporters (zing! joking!)
26
@17 Carrie Fisher
27
Thank you for bringing a Good shit read on Good Friday. Absolute crap.
28
Without name calling or the use of expletives I have to agree to disagree. For French bulldog owners that have researched the breed and are willing/able to give proper care and attention they are an absolute joy.
The point is that they exist and I don't see them being extinct any time soon. Who are you to decide what the ideal dog breed is? Perhaps you think we shouldn't breed or keep humans with certain traits because they aren't ideal? Easy does it Hitler.
29
I'm surprised that it took all the way until comment 28 for us to hit Godwin's Law territory.

j2patter @26, you're right. On the list of celebrity Frenchie owners, Carrie Fisher > Martha Stewart. So let me amend my statement @17 to living celebrity Frenchie owners. Carrie's dog Gary Fisher, though, is a perfect example of why I have mixed feelings about the breed. I'd love to go to his Instagram page, but what is that drooping tongue of his but a sign there's something inherently wrong with that dog? And I recall he's hardly the only French bulldog that has that defect.
30
@24,

You poor thing. C'mon over here and let us give you a hug, lil' fella.

@28,

The ideal dog breed is one offered up for adoption at your local humane society. Who am I to make such a proclamation you might ask?! I'm mike blob, damnit!
31
Jesus Christ, these people are insane. No wonder they're so defensive about the breed of their dog, they obviously haven't interacted with anything else for at least a decade.
32

Hey Katie and The Stranger! Shame you both! Turns out... this is a piece of shit article that is SOOO irrelevant to the currant news cycle. I suppose I should just put my French Bulldog down (euthanize his "Frenchie" [pardon my colloquialism] ass). Have you even looked into the genetic mutations No. 2 Breed German Shepherds have suffered?Hip Dysplasia? Why don't you focus on more important issues. Immigration. Gun Reform. Immigration. Foreign Poicy. Drug reform OR EVEN FUCKING LOCAL NEWS. For fuck sakes, get your shit together and report on something relevant. Who hurt you so bad that you felt the need to write this garbage Katie? Shame on you.

33
A currant is a fruit.

Ur dogs r trash.
35
Consumers can be vile creatures impervious to knowledge and indifferent to the suffering of the animals they claim to worship. More on what motivates Frenchie fanatics: https://www.villagevoice.com/2015/12/08/…
36
Let me just say, that the average lifespan is actually for an ENGLISH bulldog not a FRENCH Bulldog. The average lifespan of a French bulldog is actually 10-12. Also just for the record, the average lifespan span of a German Shepherd is 9-13 years.
39
We have 2 very healthy french bulldogs. Has the writer owned this breed or a similar breed? Seems like the author is rather uneducated.
40
As a veterinary professional all I can say is THANK GOD for this article. There is no such thing as a "healthy French bull dog" - you really are living in a delusional world. These dogs can't be born naturally! Doesn't that tell you anything whether this article pisses you off or not?! All the people that are outraged by this article are severely lacking in intelligence and common sense.
41
Check out www.barrel-dogs.com for some cute french bulldog clothes! 20% of all profits go to charities, including two that are dedicated to helping rescue frenchies, a mental health organization, and one that places dogs with veterans. Abominations for a greater cause!!
42
Thanks for this gutsy piece. For some thoughts on what motivates consumers to pay breeders to go on producing these poor wretched creatures: https://bit.ly/2J49aHD
43
I donā€™t understand how someone could write such a hatful piece and I donā€™t understand how a magazine could give space to such a hateful argument. There are ways to express opinions and to develop an argument. But this one isnā€™t a good example of a well developed argument. It wouldnā€™t even pass a freshmen writing class. Shame on all of you!
44
Fuck off Katie. I have a Frenchie and itā€™s the most loving and companion breed . I will never own another breed . Keep your negativity on Frenchies to yourself !
45
At first I was pretty offended by most of what I saw written here, then I remembered the FACT that humans are the parasitic hippocrates writing, commenting, and fighting through this article #sorrynotsorry.
FACTS:
Most, like myself, didn't actually read this poorly written, highly opinionated article. The title was all it took.
People share their opinions like they are facts.
People share these opinions when no one asks them to (including my own).
Humans created these little bundles of absolute joy.
Anyone talking trash has OBVIOUSLY never owned one (don't lie, we know you haven't).
Frenchies aren't capable of destroying the planet like we have, and continue to do so.
The author of this article obviously wrote it the way they did so they could feel like all the attention was due to good journalism (nope)
This response/comment will trigger the best traits of a human, starting with anger, or resentment from those that disagree.
There are millions of different things, FAR more important for us all, to be spending our limited existence on...
-go on, respond with your feelings, we know you want to ;)
46
P.S. note to the author: I'm so sorry that you are miserable. I get it, life can be pretty hard on us sometimes. Keep your head up, it will all work out in the end!
47
Wow, I had no real opinion, positive or negative, about French bulldog owners before or even after reading this article. But after reading these comments ... y'all are nutty.
48
My deleted comment @8 was unkind ā€” I echoed back the ā€œAā€ word used in the headline, suggested the author wouldnā€™t write for this paper forever ā€” but hardly merited excising for abuse, particularly compared to (a) some of the other angry comments here and (b) Katieā€™s original wannabe-troll glee about dead dogs.
49
I mean, when your argument is ā€œrescues are better! I hope your purebred diesā€ then maybe you need to spend a few days away from the keyboard for some inner reflection.
50
@40 ā€veterinary professionalā€

...fancy words for ā€œnot a veterinarianā€.
51
Using wiki as a source, lmao.

This article is a joke.
52
I feel sorry for whatever pet you may have. My ā€œfrenchieā€ is loving, gentle and brings my family happiness everyday. Keep your disgusting opinions to yourself. You clearly are a miserable person with nothing positive to say.
53
Out of all the hate-click articles Katie has written, who could've guessed that it would be bashing on dogs that would get her over as a full-on heel. Well done, Katie.

Oh, I mean booooo, hissssss, what about the dogs?!! (Wink, wink)
54
Apparently French Bulldog owners align very well with anti-vaxxers, pizza gate conspirators, 9/11 truthers, flat Earthers, young Earthers, global warming denialists, Trump voters, and pretty much anyone else who refuses to live in reality or conduct themselves with any semblance of sanity.
55
@54 - It's actually pretty terrifying that they're all "I love them in spite of their problems" without connecting the dots to where those problems come from. How nice of you to want something that is constantly suffocating because it makes you feel loved but tell us again how this article us "mean."

I wonder what percentage of their owners are evangelicals.
56
News flash: German Shepards are an abomination too, being selected by the AKC for many generations for what "looks cools" (slanty back legs) according to breeders and AKC judges, and preferring dogs according to those specifications - and not according to what is good for the breed. The AKC is a terrible organization and has inbred terrible health issues into pretty much every breed they've gotten their hands on -- and the people who tacitly support the AKC by buying animals from breeders who are part of the AKC -- yes you, you who buy these breeds, like the German Shepard with hip dysplasia bred right in, or the fucking frantic and inbred Cocker Spaniel with terrible digestive problems, or the French bulldog who goes through life with borderline hypoxia - you ARE part of the problem, now matter how much you treasure and love your sweet wittle Darling...
You fucking twit. Can't you see past your doggy-love emotions on the matter?
57
I really don't see any problem here.

But then, i only date women who have had their feet bound into little lotus blossoms. SO HOTT!
58
This article is ridiculous and not even well written. I guess anyone with a computer can call themselves a writer.
And FYI, I have a french bulldog and she is 8 years old with no health problems.
59
@58,

Nice to hear of your healthy dog, here's hoping for 8 more happy years! Should you choose to get a new pet after your current one dies though, please consider going the compassionate route and adopt through your local humane society.
61
@60 yes tell me more about this eugenics proposal
62
Oh! I get it! This was an April fools joke! Just a day early! Lol, trolls unite! Hang on, let me get some popcorn... Okay, I'm back, you may commence with all the misplaced hatred towards Frenchies. I mean, why would anyone want any kind of dog or pet!? Thanks for proving my previous points ya self righteous, narcissistic, and miserable haters. Confused about who my comments are directed at? Me too! Hahahaaa, lighten up and go do something productive! Stop pretending this such a debatable topic. The title would have worked for ANYTHING.
63
Honestly y'all should be rescuing dogs anywayā€”whether it's a Frenchie, Shih Tzu, or Corgiā€”NOT shelling out $2k to keep the turkey baster flowing. Shelter purebreds DO exist, I've met several.

And I shouldn't have to stand on the bus wondering how much it cost for your 'best friend' to occupy a seat. Living in Seattle I've started to equate dogs with the number of laptops they'd cost. "Wow, look at that adorable Alienware 17!"

Katie, kudos for writing what needs to be said. Maybe include some shelter stats next time so these show Moms can be properly shamed for the ducats they're giving to puppy mills.

Please wait...
