SHAWN DEMPSEY (Patchwerks)

Current top 5 tracks:

"When I became a father the first time round, I tried to keep the dream alive with a livestream I called Dad House. It was a way to play my records & cassettes while still responsibly watching my kids. Here are some dad house jams."

Dungen, "Häxan (Version)" (Smalltown Supersound)
"Prins Thomas reworking Swedish psych band Dungen. This heavy prog rework album gets to me on all my levels. Bonus points for putting the kids to sleep."

Tornado Wallace, "Trance Encounters (Original Mix)" (Running Back)
"Never thought I would say it, but trance is back! I’ve followed TW’s career from edit meister to balearic beardo and have loved it all."

L.H.A.S. INC, "LA SUNRISE" (RONG)
"L.H.A.S. stands for 'Larry Heard Appreciation Society.' Early-morning synth drift that lingers long after last beat has stopped."

Doc Severinsen, "Be with You (DJ Harvey edit)" (Pacific Beach Recording Company)
"Doors opened 30 minutes ago, people are still moseying, talking, and needing a little nudge. Drop a jam like this and it will remind everyone why tomorrow will be a pizza-in-bed kind of day."

Krycek, "1991 (Natural Magic's Covarrubias Version)" (label)
"Natural Magic, Portland's finest purveyors of jams, parties, high life, and high fives cut this remix a couple years back and it hasn’t left my record box since."

Crew/label affiliations: "Dempsey fam, Patchwerks, Slowpøke alum."

Styles played: "Dad house."

Events organized: "Since I broke out in hives during the last Slowpøke event, I have started listening to my body and stopped trying to throw parties. I have been helping out Patchwerks throw events (synths at the Laser Dome!) Currently knuckles deep in building their new website!"

DJing philosophy: "Be super-excited, procrastinate till the last day, frantically throw a bunch of records in a box, and cross my fingers that I’ve read the night/vibe correctly. Also, always keep them dancing."

Format: "I like records. I like the head space I’m in when I’m digging for and playing them. When doing the digital dance, I easily fall for the ‘gotta catch em all’ struggle. I end up with a grip of files in various “FRESH TUNAGE” folders, they then disappear into my mess of a 'dewey dempsey system,' and I forget all the context of when/how/why they got there.

"I labor needlessly over buying a record, it can take weeks for me to justify its place in the fold. Good and bad, I relive those pangs when it’s time to decide if it makes it out of the living room. Having to pull a box of records for a night out and then making that box work is also part of the 'fun.' Maybe now I know why I break out in hives all the time."

Worst request: “'Wheels on the Bus,' on repeat, by my 2-year-old."

Upcoming events: "With the arrival of our second kid, things are a tad hectic. I occasionally get out. Thanks Kremwerk for having me warm the system up from time to time. When things 'normalize,' I plan to throw more Patchwerks events and maybe crank the dad house stream back up. In the meantime, I've joined the sad-synth-noodlers club. Did I mention my SoundCloud yet?!

"Last thing: It’s easy for old-timers to 'back in the day…' about the the scene. However, great stuff is happening and it’s the next wave who are keeping thing interesting! Big ups to Kremwerk, Secondnature, and TUF crews for keeping things lit long after the folks have gone to bed."
