"... the most Mariners of all the tragedies to befall the Mariners in recent years because it was unforeseeable, and its effect is so comprehensively catastrophic for the team both on and off the field, and in both the long and short terms. It’s long been said of Mariners fandom that there is no floor, and today was a stark reminder of our cursed, constantly falling existence."

Wow. Your severe depression aside, can we not wait till July for the post mortem? There's still lots of games left in this 162 game season. Let's see if they're as tough on pitchers as they seem. They are a highly-entertaining Team -- so far. Go Mariners!

This is the worst news since Dumbo got caught using that magic feather.

@1: He may be depressed, but at least he's not delusional; this was only a marginal squad with Cano.

5

@4 -- perhaps.

But IS this 'marginal squad' hitting far above their weight: One no-hitter; Felix (the Fox) learning Old Pitchers' tricks, and they're what, one game out of first place; etc.?

They're an exciting ball club.
Forgive me whilst I give them a chance.

i am digging the kristo vibes. punch to the gut that it was, i guess I was softened on PED's after the "everyone was doing it" angle on the very readable and well linked Armstrong piece in deadspin. kristo is right, there is definitely something to the team this year, and watching them slash and burn, even now without robbie, who i still love, is to this mariners baseball fan, much better than most of the lineups they have ran with in the last 15 years.

As the Mariners exist to humiliate baseball generally and Seattle specifically, I find Cano’s own-goal benching entirely consistent with the spirit of both longstanding, abject humiliations.

Like, um....ouch.
