RIP Michael's mom. Take care of yourself, Mr.

2

What does “add or maintain” mean? Does “maintain” mean bringing into the fold or does it mean the same number? Will this head tax be considered a success if it maintains 899 apartments but only brings 1 new apt online?

3

Your link to the CNN piece about the head tax seems to be broken.
I was redirected to CNN's 404 page not found page.

Following up on @3, Nathalie dropped the "l" on the end of the linked web address. Since the Stranger editorial staff sucks at HTML, and likely won't fix the link, here's the correct address:

5 Democrats vote a torturer to head the CIA. #TheAssistance #BlameSusanSurandon

6

An "honor system based on self-reporting". You mean, like the tobacco and petroleum companies telling us their shit was safe for 50+ years?

Nothing to see here. That's just the way we do business in this country.

10

@ 5,

Yeah, this is so freaking sick. All that we know about Haspel is that she's a torturer, a compulsive liar, and that's she's already carried out the destruction of evidence that implicated her in war crimes. This'll end super well.

11

"Comcast! Your internet went out on me already once this morning!!!"

OBVIOUSLY, then, their rates are too low.
If you want Good Service, from a Monopoly, you're just gonna hafta keep paying more, More MORE till they get all the bugs worked out.

"Your phone call is very important to us.
Have a nice day."

Strange how libs complain high consumer bills but never complain about higher taxes. They complain about the one that gives them more value for their money.

13

@12: Here on Slog, I’ve been adamant in my opposition to the “head tax” for awhile now.

The issue with Comcast is value for money paid, a ratio which has always been low and never risen. This is typical of privately-owned monopolies, which is why we “libs” have spent a century-plus fighting such monopolies.

But hey, you have a cute slogan there. Why taint it with fact?

14

@12 So you're totes cool with paying $90 installation fees for their not-so-great services?

15

@12 dipshit, everyone complains about high consumer bills except the corporations doing the billing.

And liberals complain about regressive unfair taxation. Like the fact that corporations like billion dollar telecoms get all sorts of tax exceptions, tax payer subsidies, and bailouts that average citizens do not.

But mostly the fact that it has to be explained to you the difference between a non-transparent for-profit private enterprise and funding public services... well, that should make you shut-up and maybe take a day or two to contemplate how much your teachers failed you.

16

@14: I didn't say it's not a high bill, but you do get the product. What are you getting for your property taxes or high rent beyond any civic sense of altruism for the greater good? Not much.

2 posts by noon and one of them is the morning News? No wonder nobody comes to Slog anymore

16 - I get to live in a city that's not a shithouse/shithole like the Spokane Valley is.

The best thing to happen to the City of Spokane was when the Valley decided to tell the rest of the region to fuck off so it could be it's own little low-tax, low-regulation conservative hellhole - it let Spokane shake off its taker red state County cousin and turn into an actual decent place to live! They even taxed themselves (!!!) to fix up their jewel of Riverfront Park and the Falls. Downtown is bustling with more people and growth than I have never seen in all my years of growing up and visiting there.

Also, do you really think so little of American government and the people who work for it that you can't even understand the value proposition? That's just sad. Very GOP of you though.

19

"Add or maintain." That just defines political courage, eh?

20

@18 - I understand the value proposition, but redress is also critical for a free society.

21

@20
Another word for "redress" is "voting".

22

"Raindrip: "I didn't say it's not a high bill, but you do get the product."

Certainly. You get it WHEN it's working. (to be fair, it usually does) And if they choose to slow certain content down, like say, some Leftist site (derr KomKastKorps is NOT in the business of promoting of left-leaning entities), and speed up FOX and Fiends, eg, who the fuck are YOU to complain? It's a fucking MONOPOLY. And you can fucking take it, or you can leave it.

I'm glad you agree, their prices are exorbitant.

24

I like that you assholes are objecting to an installation fee.

You want to install the coax, buy your own shitty modem, and then complain to comcast when your service isn’t up to snuff?

Pay for the service you cheap fucks.

27

Rapists exist in all socioeconomic brackets. Implying government funded programs enable rape is disingenuous.

29

"Pay for the (KomKastKorps) service you cheap fucks." --Muffin

Sounds like one of their late-payment notifications.
I bet they pay their employees really well, too...

30

So, while they wait and wait and wait in line for the next available representative (@$13/hour) does KKK supply their beloved Customers with a fucking bathroom?

"Yeah -- it's right behind that tree over there. Oh, and if you leave the building, you'll hafta take a new number. Sorry. It's just Company Policy."

31

"No, sorry, there is no tp.
Might wanna mind the poison ivy.
I hear it's real bad this year."

32

@16- Are you for real? "what do i get?" I get roads that are driveable, fire service that is dependable, courts that will actually do things like enforce contracts and work out disputes (this benefits business, not just "libs", by the way), environmental protections, zoning that keeps someone from putting a steel mill next to my house, an educational system that is accessible to all, unlike lots of other countries, and the list goes on and on. Have you spent any time in countries where the government doesn't do these things? Life is a hell of a lot better here.

If you truly can't think of anything that the public is getting out of taxation you are not thinking very hard. And no, I don't think Comcast is doing a better job than the government.

33

@16, @32: I’ve been enjoying my bike commute in a protected bike lane. It’s fast, safe, and has no tolls, because my taxes paid for it.

Again, why ruin a perfectly good piece of sloganeering by wittingly exposing it to fact?
