For those still playing the never-satisfying game of looking for a rational explanation for President Trump's actions, David Leonhardt argues today that, when it comes to Trump's foreign policy, "it’s past time to take seriously the only explanation for all of Trump’s behavior: He wants to destroy the Western alliance."

The latest evidence: Trump's bizarre feud with Canada, his false claims about trade issues, and his continued lobbying for Putin's interests (to a degree that has a conservative magazine editor asking, "This is the U.S. president? Why is he talking like an RT host?").

Like others, Leonhardt calls for "a response that’s as serious as the threat." But, like others, when he looks around at the enablers and appeasers running Congress right now, he comes away with only one real political solution: the midterms, which are less than five months away.
