The summit in Singapore was never meant to be a place where they work out the nuts and bolts of a true disarmament agreement. That will take place over a period of months, perhaps years, of close diplomatic work.

The point of the summit was to show the world that there is a will to work towards a united and peaceful future, to disarm nukes and cease military activities.

While it is only paper, the fact that these two leaders affixed their signatures to these statements is a historically large step. It went quite well.

76 degrees later this week is pleasant, not hot.

Bush 41 turns 94 today.

@1

Greatest president this century?

Or greatest president EVER?!!!

4

@1,
Agree. It's an historic event. I'm quite pleased with both of them.

Nathalie,
I'm curious. Why no mention of that horrific explosion and fire that killed a family of 5 (mother, father and 3 children) in Brinnon, WA off of Hood Canal?

Most tragic. I couldn't get more from this morning's news. At first glance, it might be a propane gas tank related explosion as the cause.

Wow, how unfortunate for that family. My condolences.

5

Sorry? I didn't hear anything you said except for the little kid on the drums. She is AWESOME. More of THAT please!

6

@2

Who?

But seriously, remember when he cancelled his NRA membership because they compared federal officers to Nazis?

@1:

Yeah, except North Korea has made these sorts of vague, we'll-work-out-the-details-later kinds of "agreements" in the past, and has reneged on doing anything substantial every time. I would like to hope this time will be different, but given Kim got pretty much everything out of this meeting he could reasonably expect: face time with the U.S. President, which he'll exploit to the hilt for domestic propaganda purposes; a unilateral on-the-record commitment from IL DOUCHE to remove U.S. troops from South Korea (without bothering to consult with the SK leadership beforehand - yet another sterling example of him willing to throw our allies under the bus in order to appease a despot and stroke his own ego); and a mostly all-expenses trip to Singapore, whereas we got literally bupkis in return, characterizing this as "a historic first step" seems premature, to say the least.

Get back to us in six months or a year and then we'll talk about how historic it actually turned out to be.

Teddy G has already booked his flight to Oslo!

That summit video looks like one of those Left Behind movies.

And nothing about Donaldo dangling a condo development in front of Kim? Is he really that naive?

11

@4 She mentioned the cabin explosion yesterday. Old news.

@1, @4

“The fact that you think this was a success means you are a monumental idiot who knows nothing about North Korea or an extraordinary liar,” Wellman wrote. “Either way no one with half a brain thinks DPRK repeating lies of the past while we unilaterally give up joint exercises is a ‘win’.”

Yeah, not wanting to be a pessimist but the only person who lies as much as Trump is Kim Jong Un.

I wouldn't bet on either of those motherfuckers keeping their promises.

I'll believe it when I see it.

14

Look, I know you all are required to be frothing at the mouth angry at a successful peace summit because it involved Trump, but these things take time and move by baby steps. But you have to take that first step, and have that first meeting at some point.

@7: Your characterization is laughably reductive, it would be much more accurate to say that North Korea has been involved in lots of talks and deals, but they have always fallen through at some point, and the parties involved have pulled out, which includes countries that are not North Korea. Hence why signing a document is the "first step."

@12: I can tell you need some extra attention today, so I am giving you some right now. I hope it makes you feel better.

15

@14: You're dumb.

16

@3 Greatest LEADER EVER!!!

18

@14:

Reductive? Really? When the entire reason literally every single one of those prior deals "fell through" is because one of the three KIms to hold uncontested power in North Korea for the past 70 years deliberately failed to adhere to the terms of those agreements, thus forcing both the U.S. and the other nations involved to scrap them. You want to make it sound like it was all just a series of unfortunate misunderstandings, when in fact North Korea actively sabotaged them when it suited their own agenda to do so.

@17:

To hell with human rights - when there are luxury hotel towers just waiting to be built on the sunny shores of Wonsan!
