The obvious answer: he's hoping for a job with the Trump administration when he leaves office.

2

Awesome, this guy got elected because he was on TV shoving anarchists at the WTO but now he's too chickenshit to talk to some old lady who looks like she's really into PBS.

Reichert doesn't stand anywhere.

He sits, way off to the side, perhaps taking a nap.

So sad that so many do not understand ILLEGAL immigration. As a LEGAL IMMIGRANT, I wonder why they do not do things LEGALLY. Breaking the law lands one in jail: including, robbery, murder, rape, etc. Their children do not get to stay with their criminal parents either. ILLEGAL immigration is the #1 cause of human trafficking, modern day slavery and crime. Sponsors who deceive the ignorant are making millions off these poor people. Stop ILLEGAL immigration. There are 675k to 1 million LEGAL immigrants per year. Just my opinion.

People immigrate illegally because the immigration systems in place do not operate properly.

Illegal border crossing is a pretty misdemeanor on the same level as a parking violation. Living in the US without permission (as in overstaying a visa) is not a crime at all. Are children usually removed when parents make a parking violation?

Illegal immigration is not the #1 cause of crime. Far from it.

While immigrants are sadly most often the victims of trafficking and slavery, that is not always because of illegal immigration. In my opinion, seeking to demarginalize and empower immigrants will be more helpful to stop trafficking then "zero tolerance " or detention.

Also, evidence has shown that the current approach is not a deterrent for illegal immigration, and in fact just costs us a lot of money.

Some food for thought.

@4 Since you're a legal immigrant I'm sure you can explain all the costs and steps necessary to become a legal citizen of the US, because it's not as easy as most people think. And since one of Republicans' stated goals is to slash legal immigration, you may not even be able to immigrate here if you wanted to now.

But of course what's going on at the southern border right now is all about filling for-profit prisons to the tune of billions of dollars in profits, which wealthy Trump donors were banking on. Why stop illegal immigration when there's a fortune to be made by detaining and/or jailing border them for as long as possible? Not that this has anything to do with Reichert, but he's a team player and Republicans can count on his vote when they really need it.

@7 - They have the right to meet with their elected representatives at their reps offices, don't they? That's how it's always worked as long as I've been alive (six decades).

Would you rather they show up at his house and intrude on his personal life? Hire a helicopter to fly a banner past his office window? Maybe a hot air balloon?

Reichert and those like him are cowards, they were elected to represent the people who live in their district, not to hide from those people once elected. The people in this article didn't bait or trespass, they simply did what they'd done before, go to his office with their message, deliver it respectfully, and leave.

10

@9 you know hiding behind the laws is morally equivalent to "just following orders" right?

11

These losers don't have a "right" to jack-squat from Reichert.
If they don't like they way he treats them they can vote for someone else.
So grow up and get off the fucking lawn.
Losers.

Mistral, as I've read repeatedly in many places, his office consistently ignores requests from constituents that they know do not support the current GOP agenda. He's FAMOUS for ducking any and all attempts by constituents to get that simple little appointment you mention. Since he's ducking his legal job, what would you suggest these folks do? Why doesn't their voice get to count?
