Matriarch, "Wit's End" (self-released). Woo, boy girl! Matriarch ain't fucking around. The Seattle quartet bust out of the gate with Hold & Release, an eight-song exercise in swift and heavy catharsis for leftists experiencing hourly rage episodes under the world-class corruption of the current GOP.

On their debut 7-inch EP, vocalist Rachel LeBlanc (best known for her solo noise project Blessed Blood and her curation of Debacle Fest), drummer Malia Alexander, bassist Casey Nolan, and guitarist Marietta Crockett vent with blunt fury at gentrification, toxic masculinity, inequality, the evils of fracking, music-scene b.s., and wrongheaded patriotism.

The muscular "Wit's End" bulges and plunges with a staccato, coiled metal attack, summoning a zeal to spring into activism. The song's an antidote to apathy to which you can bang your head. (The Hold & Release 7-inch will feature four of the eight tracks off of the digital release and will come out July 27. The record-release party happens that night at Clock-Out Lounge.)

Matriarch play tonight at the Black Lodge with Wild Powwers, LOZEN, and JNX. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Duwamish Tribal Services.
