I'm more interested in the back story of the father saying good-bye to his son. Is this a trip, a divorce, etc?

Critical story, NG. Good work.

Great work

I've been in Europe for a few weeks. You should see the press over there. Trump and the US are looking like savage barbarians for taking babies away from mothers, and then losing them. Sure, it might be slightly exaggerated, but that's basically what we look like to the outside world. This immigrant separation story is getting more negative press than anything else Trump has done, which is saying a lot. I've never been so embarrassed to be an American in all my life.

@6, @7

I guess you don't know who's president.

9

@5: Trump is embarrassing as a president, but that does not equate to being embarrassed for being an American. Likewise, we don't expect Turks and Italians to be embarrassed for being Turks or Italians just because they also have unsavory leaders.

I don't know if she crossed illegally or presented herself legally for asylum, but in either case, in the current state of affairs, she'd be detained until her hearing. Folks waiting for an asylum hearing used to be let free and given permission to work, as it can take up to 3 years to get a hearing.

If she did cross illegally, then she committed a petty misdemeanor (legally on par with a public drunkenness or a traffic violation). I'm not sure what a bond or jail time would look like for that level of violation.

I believe that this is a special case, as the Trump administration is ordering that those awaiting asylum hearings be detained (for god knows how long), as they say they're worried folks will flee. Perhaps NWIRP's attorneys worked out a special bond deal because of the extraordinary circumstances, and so she could go see her kid.

I don't have any inside info, but I work with NWIRP and folks involved in detainment proceedings fairly regularly, so that'd be my guess.

Here we go ... a little Googling ... improper entry (crossing illegally): $50 fine and/or 6 months jail time. Amounts doubled for each subsequent illegal crossing, not to exceed $250 or 2 years on jail.

So, I guess it depends if she got caught entering improperly, this time or in the past. With the amount of the bond, I'm still guessing this is a special deal. I'm prepared to be wrong though. I'm not a lawyer.

1: Good idea(and I say that as Greener), but what does that have to do with this story?

T___p will expect the family and the rest of us to thank him for this...and if he doesn't allow any more reunions, he'll say it's because he didn't get enough praise for allowing this one.

@13: Not fond of rum I see.

The bond is for immigration detention, because currently everyone who requests asylum is being held in immigration detention until they are evaluated as eligible to pay to get out. This is explicitly different to posting bail in a criminal case. https://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/immigration-detention-101-information-detainees-family-friends.html

Thanks! I only had partial information there.
