Come on, Lester, we still don't have an answer to the real question here:

Did Sawant use the city's photocopiers to run off the fliers for the rally/show?

Do a little digging, already.

3

Um Sargon, just because the owner thinks it's worth $40M, and sues for that amount, does not mean the building is actually worth that much. No historical value? Name another original Art Deco performance space in the PIke Place District? Oh, right, you are one of those idiots who think property rights trump the needs of the community.

3

so the "needs of the community" include run-down, stinky old concert venues?

why do Marxists always hate property rights?

lulz.

"If I should be recused from any Showbox votes because I’m organizing on an issue than that basically implies that all city council members and all the county council members should be recused from every single vote that involves big business because the corporate politicians are completely biased on big business," Sawant said.

Scary quote. CM Sawant does not appear to understand the difference between a quasijudicial matter- where the council is acting as a judge and jury, so advocacy is inappropriate- and regular public policy decisions. This is elected official 101 stuff. She either hasn't bothered to learn the basics of her job or doesn't give a shit.

The lawsuit is so obviously valid, the best The Stranger can do is pick on minor, obscure points of law in the suit. That the Council acted unfairly is plain for all to see — calling parking lots “historic” doesn’t even come close to passing the giggle test.

Judges and juries love to punish such obvious legislative over-reach.

10

"Washington’s appearance of fairness doctrine applies only if the Council was acting in a quasi-judicial manner."

Didn't the same thing happen when the Mayor and Council acted in secret to kill the head tax?.

11

It's so funny to watch the working poor clutch their "property rights" as if they'll ever own any significant amount of capital

12

CM Sawant, what is your favorite kind of cake? "The corporate politicians are completely biased on big business."

CM Sawant, what is your favorite place to relax? "The corporate politicians are completely biased on big business."

CM Sawant, who's your favorite baseball player? "The corporate politicians are completely biased on big business."

CM Sawant, have you ever been to Italy? "The corporate politicians are completely biased on big business."

OK, I'm just going to give up...

13

11

Speaking for yourself I see

14

@11: The capital and assets belonging to the working poor, the working middle-class, and the working rich are all significant.

15

The Mayberry Marxist strikes again.

16

@10: No, because taxation is a legislative function, not a quasi-judicial one.

(You may recall the slogan, “No Taxation Without Representation”?)

17

"She didn't seem to have any regrets."

You have to have a moral compass to have regrets.

18

@11: 'It's so funny to watch the working poor clutch their "property rights" as if they'll ever own any significant amount of capital'

A government which can simply abrogate property rights can also abrogate any other individual rights as well, and I'm happy to have the rich owner of a cinder-block building take point for all of us on this one.

19

@14 When 100 individuals control half the country's wealth, our assets are insignificant. Pride is the only thing keeping everyone who comments on this site from recognizing it.

20

@18 I think I locked in your preferred pronouns since you refer to the governments ability to infringe on individual's rights in the hypothetical

21

@11, @19, @20: As recounted earlier in the thread, the principle at stake here here is the rule of law, which was violated by our Council’s rash and arbitrary action, when they changed the rules in the middle of the game to create the outcome they wanted. The rights they so needlessly infringed happen to be some rich guy’s property rights, for which he will be compensated from our city’s treasury.

If you’re all agitated about rich people having too much already, how about showing some outrage for our Council having witlessly given a rich guy some of our money?
