Any news on the uneducated black voter?

3

And to continue.....you seem to think working class(white) folks are dumb? Any thoughts on working class blacks or Hispanics or Asians?

Just curious Nathalie......I mean, I get it in that your trying to get clicks n stuff, but those are some pretty racist remarks.

Are baristas or wannabe journalists working class?

4

2

Ya, says they guy with nazis and hockey fans hiding under his bed.

Keep hiding sausage boy..

5

This is called 'Indian summer', a term used in pre-idiodic times that referred to delightful autumn sunny days.

6

Whoa, NHL. Triggered!

Make Reading Comprehension Great Again.

8

Very well put Sargon. The comfort level with stereotypes and generalizations always impedes social progress.

9

Psssst. She's not making fun of blue collar workers or the white working class. She's making fun of Republican voters.

She doesn't need to say anything about black or latino working class folks, because they're generally not dumb enough to vote Republican.

10

You know, for many years I did a number of working class jobs. I drove a tractor trailer around the country. I drove a tow truck for a while. I drove around picking up residential recycling for a bit. I was also an enlisted man in the Army. And as a result, not only have I been a white, working class voter, I've known quite a few, all over the country.

Nowadays, I'm a graduate student in a pretty highly ranked university on a merit-based scholarship. I'm a member of Phi Beta Kappa. I have an "honors" and a "summa cum laude" to go with my BA. I'm not saying this to toot my own horn, but to point out that, by any objective measure, I ain't dumb.

But I bet I looked like I was to you when I was out earning a paycheck the hard way.

And I take pride in having worked hard in blue collar jobs. And I remember where I came from.

You want to talk about how prejudiced and dumb white working class people are? How about you check your own prejudices and privileges first.

11

@9: Maybe, but readers shouldn't have to be on guard to parse sarcasm - unless it's the opinion page. This is a news roundup.

12

@9 Here is what she wrote:

"Dumb white voter demographic may be shrinking: I don’t mean to put words in Gene Balk’s (the Seattle Times’ secret weapon, The Data Machine) mouth—he didn’t call anyone dumb—but his report on working-class white adults in Washington shows that the demographic is shrinking in Washington."

She equated "dumb white vote demographic" with "working-class white adults". She said she "didn't want to put words in Balk's mouth," making it clear that the word "dumb" was hers. She didn't say a word about party. Sure sounds like she was making that connection to me.

13

@6 & @9 Lastlight: For the Double Slam Dunk Win. Kudos!
@12: What are you so afraid of? Accountability? Well informed voters who know how to actually vote wisely?

14

"... readers shouldn't have to be on guard to

This is a news roundup."

This is The Stranger.
They (used to?) call themselves 'the only Newspaper in town.'
Get it?

More on the latest Saudi assassination [not from facts-free FOX -- from their opposite]:

“ 'We offer our sincere apologies to the Khashoggi family for mishandling Jamal’s slaughter. This should have been a quick in-and-out death and dismemberment situation, not the drawn-out, hours-long bloodbath it turned into. We flubbed this one big time.' The crown prince also assured journalists that Saudi leaders plan to implement new murder guidelines to standardize future assassinations and reduce instances of bungled hits."

15

OMG -- This just in:

Headline: "Saudi Arabia Sends Assassins To Dismember
Entire International Community In Effort To Stifle Dissent"

https://www.theonion.com/saudi-arabia-sends-assassins-to-dismember-entire-intern-1829763500

16

@13 What am I afraid of? All I did was more or less repeat what Ms. Graham wrote. Others were trying to suggest that "Oh, she just meant Republicans." No, that's not what she wrote.

What I actually am afraid of is that the Democratic party will continue down the path of buying into conservative economics with the window dressing of progressive positions on social issues. That is the Obama-Clinton model.

And, as it turns out, pairing classically liberal economics with stuff like pre-judging the entire category of white working class people as "dumb" (if only there were a good word for people who attribute negative characteristics to an entire group based on skin color!) doesn't seem to be a good formula for winning elections. Not least because vast swathes of the country are pretty damn white. And those would appear to be the parts of the country where the Democrats have more or less decided to stop contesting elections.

So that's my fear. That we will continue to lose ground in "flyover country." Which is a really dumb strategy given the structure of the Senate and the Electoral College.

17

"I LOVE the Uneducated!" -- Trumpfy, to massive Cheers

And the un-Educated Love him.

Wouldn't it be Nice to see attrition finally catch up to the un-Educated.
Perhaps we might even re-introduce 'Civics' in our Education Systems....

Oh, but wait -- we've got Secretary of Education Batty DeVos dismantling/privatizing Public Education as we speak -- so the birth control/abortion-denied un-Educated are gonna breed like rats.

19

I dunno. I'm a working-class white male. It was a bummer to read what she wrote.

20

Given how white and uneducated The Stranger's staff is I found this thread quite hilarious.

And yeah, Fain will likely win reelection, so I guess screaming rape for the fun of it won't win elections. Maybe the Democrats should try issues next time around?

21

Liberals ALWAYS go super classist in their insults.

It's part of believing you are better than everyone else, but for no discernable reason.

Also, The Stranger has always despised blue collar workers (unless they are serving them overpriced food and drink), this is nothing new.

22

How interesting. The usual crowd who would otherwise be freaking out about the rape accusation and how men are so endangered are instead rallying around their fragile white identities.

23

What's really interesting is how those with myopic views comprised of racial stereotypes still try to define the debate.

24

Voting against one's own interest while buying into racially divisive rhetoric is dumb; however, it's 64% of non-educated whites who went to the box also voted for Trump, and not 64% of that demographic as claimed by Gene Balk. The distinction is important because non-participation is high and well over 50% among the poor.

@5 Continually acting as if people who mention climate change are so much more problematic than climate change itself is really screwed up. Prima facie evidence that watching Fox rots your brain

25

24

Your first sentence must be referring to the DNC playbook....it’s been their strategy since the 60’s.

26

here comes up-is-down troll

27

Looking forward to the piece about dumb working-class Black and Hispanic voters. I suspect you don't have the guts to call out any other race, stereotype them, and make blanket statements about certain behaviors. Such as the fact that Black males are murdering each other in massive numbers. Nothing more dumb than a demographic of people slaughtering one another night after night not he streets of America, then having the gull to make it out like the stacked bodies have anything to do with a flawed cultural character, and not poverty.

What I think's great about this bigoted pieces: Nathalie is putting their name to these bigoted, elitist pieces will define their career.

29

"Dumb black voter demographic may be shrinking: I don’t mean to put words in Gene Balk’s (the Seattle Times’ secret weapon, The Data Machine) mouth—he didn’t call anyone dumb—but his report on working-class black adults in Washington shows that the demographic is shrinking in Washington. The trend is reflected nationwide."

Must be the result of abortions and shootings. You know that dumb black working-class demographic just can't seem to help themselves.

30

What Nathalie wrote is a round-up blurb that comments on a news story she didn't write. It's not a stand alone piece. You have to read the linked article in order to understand the connection she is making. Also, consider the tone and context of The Stranger. This ain't NPR.

31

30
"You have to read the linked article in order to understand the connection she is making."

So, are you saying, shit doesn't happen in a Vacuum? That there's MORE to the Story? Like, when we invade a soverign nation, not posing a direct threat to US, there may be Fallout? (See; dick Cheney's Never-Ending TRILLION$ War on the Middle East)

Or, when Kochs & Oilgarchs continue to stuff their Fossil Fuels down our throats, in spite of probable Catastrophic Climate Change, increasing desertifaction, massive drought/crop failure etc, and that causes refugees to flee their Homes in search of habitable ground, and they then end up on other nation's borders? Like OURS?

There's MORE to the Story?!

"Also, consider the tone and context of The Stranger. This ain't NPR."

Thank you, @Last,Light!
And thank GOD the Kochs haven't yet also discovered The Stranger.
Or we'd be packed up tight with far far FAR right wing trolls,
right here on our very own precious Slogs,
whining about how BAD the Libs are treating them.

32

Let's not call working class purple dumb. At least don't fucking wonder why dems aren't winning elections reliably, here is exhibit #481947204641042

33

I rarely see a baccalaureate credential noted in Stranger writer bios. Either most don't have them or don't want to say where they got their degrees? Seems like white with no degree is pretty popular at this paper....

34

@30 it's crazy how y'all will make every excuse in the book to protect your ability to roundly - and baselessly - criticize entire classes of Americans. It says a lot about who you are on the inside - pathetic, small hearted and modestly educated people who can't accept a world in which you aren't inherently superior to anyone else.

I mean MAYBE just maybe if you treated others as individuals rather than simply fungible human shaped things that vote, perhaps other people would respect you. Same for you Auntie, you are too old to be this ignorant. At last Natalie is still in high school and didn't know better

35

"This ain't NPR" no fucking shit. Seriously, you should get that $500 back from that brilliant education you got from your local community college.

36

@34: The need to denigrate people to make oneself feel superior is laughable and basic, but what really makes me shake my head is the cowardice of it all.

What they really want to say is "blue collar workers are dumb, and I hate them" but they aren't "allowed" to say/think that since that cohort includes minorities as well. So they have to dog whistle it in by saying "white working class" to make their irrational hatred acceptable to the Twitter feed masses.

After all, if you desperately need to hate, who can you acceptably hate except whites anymore? It's so cowardly and weak.

But as you noted, is is also short sighted, self-serving and impossibly stupid. "White blue collar workers are inherently racist, stupid, and the cause of all the nation's ills...wait, why don't these white blue collar workers vote for us anymore? What a puzzler!"

37

@7:

Speaking of dumb - you DO know it is literally impossible to be "racist" against ones own "race", yes?

38

@37 - Isn’t that the definition of white guilt?

39

Oh yeah and this

https://reason.com/blog/2018/10/17/seneca-valley-mean-girls-false-sexual

40

Funny thing is, those dumb working class whites make more $$ and are happier than the “writers” working at the stranger.

And 34 wins.

41

You people asked for all-natural cockroach poison made from fruits, ya got it, now ya bitch about cockroach poison in your fruity water.

42

@38:

Actually, no, it's not.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_guilt

43

@42: Thanks. Great take by George Will:

George F. Will, a conservative American political columnist, wrote: "[White guilt is] a form of self-congratulation, where whites initiate "compassionate policies" toward people of color, to showcase their innocence to racism."[6]

45

34

Dude, you don't know the first thing about who I am or how I treat others. You can fuck right off with that. I was pointing out what (in my opinion) was an overreaction to a left leaning alt weekly calling Trump voters dumb. Sorry if that was too big a leap for you. You obviously disagree. Cool, no problem.

I'm a working class white voter myself. I grew up in an uneducated, poor family but worked my ass off and put myself all the way through grad school. I was a blue collar worker for many decades. I got the joke and wasn't offended.

46

37 - wrong again. one of the classical definitions of "racism" is applying a negative traits as inherent in a race - and it's done all the time by virtue signaling "good" whities. Oh, let me guess you are all-in on the new SJ definition where its that equation that requires power to be involved? well even with that new reading of the word, we have whites in expensive cities lobbing grenades down on their supposed economic lessers, which is a bit of a power dynamic. unless it's you, the hopeless hipster joiner virgue-signaling poser idiot that I would hope the rural whites or whoever would realize they are much more skilled and prepared for life than. sucks to be so unoriginal. I hope you have at least one valuable talent to make up for all the average and below I keep reading from your menial brain.

47

"... conservatives online hate ... anyone on government assistance ... "

Conservatives hate anyone on governmental assistance who is NOT making a killing of tens or hundreds of million$, suckling frantically on the governmental teat -- for instance, the vastly wealthy, who prefer to use Earth's precious biosphere as their very own private Corporate Dumping Grounds, spring most immediately to mind.

They hate the "Socialism" -- but only when it goes to the truly Needy.

48

@1, @3, @4, @25, and @40: Still couldn't land Derp boy, could you, Ogie?
@2 German Sausage and @26 anon1256: That's because Ogie's got a cow pie for a brain and keeps mistaking it for a hockey puck. Knock on his head and there's nobody home.
@16 Corydon: We really do need to eliminate the electoral college.
@17 and @31 kristofarian: Thank you and bless you for nailing it again.
@21 and @36: That's right. Keep telling yourself that, Teddy.
@34: What a crock! You're the reigning King of Ignorance, Sporty. Quit now while you're centuries behind.
@40: Oh, look, everybody--Ogie's cheering on Sporty, The Reigning King of Ignorance! Why am I not surprised? You clowns are beyond pathetic. You're just afraid of losing your hard ons.

49

@34 & @40: Have you and your fellow trolling ilk ever wondered why Y chromosomes have been dying out over the last four decades? More girl babies are being born now to those voting red, living in under-funded (Hel-LO, those in Grays Harbor and Yakima Counties!) and in rural regions than ever before because of inbred RepubliKKKan fueled stupidity and ignorance. The GOP is hellbent on dumbing 'em down, fattening 'em up, and keeping 'em dependent on fossil fuels--yep. Gee, that'll learn those "ignorant liberals", shucky darn!
Here's to the Blue Tsunami---Making America Think Again.
