Something tells me that polling place in Kansas is not going to be stocking 13000 ballots.

2

No better time to impeach a worthless bum than when the economy is good.

3

So what typically happens or what should happen when you’ve got a prime minister that gets thrown out but still claims the executive position, and has a rabid fan base and ruthlessly loyal henchmen? Asking for a friend in Sri Lanka.

4

Voters should be aware of voter suppression but candidates should commit to securing the vote and to making sure every vote is counted (unlike Clinton who did not support any recount)

57F at night is pretty balmy. Note the previous record of 56 was set just last year.

5

That polling place in Kansas is going to need a throughput operation at the level of a NFL game, only better because at a sporting event all you need to do is scan a ticket and send them in. These people actually need to spend a few minutes in a booth picking a candidate! Man, it is easy to forget how easy it is here in Seattle.

@4 A 2016 recount wouldn’t have done anyone any good. Even if the two states Trump won by 1.0% or less flipped (WI & MI), he still would have taken the presidency by 25 electoral votes.

Absent big systematic vote count fraud or mismanagement, focusing on winning elections by getting the voters to get to the polls is the way to go - encouraging and sponsoring universal mail-in balloting in those two states, for example.

I lived in Sri Lanka for about a year. I could never master their head bobble.

Oh hey, Washington’s own Matt Shea (R-Gilead) has made it into both Rolling Stone and Talking Points Memo for his detailed plans for “killing all non-believers and establishing a Christian theocracy.”

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich turned over the mass murder conspiracy plan to the FBI, and now Matt Shea is internet famous. No word yet on whether his treasonous scheme to violently overthrow the US government and commit the mass murder of Americans will help or hurt his reelection chances.

"the problem being that the vast majority of job openings require a four-year degree".

I doubt that, it's been a while since I needed a new job but most HR depts seem to inflate the requirements for jobs and then after weeding out good potential hires complain there are no qualified candidates willing to work for $15/ hour.

A record high low temperature? That may seem abnormal, but the important thing to remember - the only thing that really, truly matters - is that in statistical terms, you cannot definitively say that it is abnormal. It’s cold comfort, I know, but we cannot say with certainty that this unusual-seeming temperature was NOT caused by natural variability or even how much of the abnormality was driven by natural variability and how much by anthopogenic causes. So please don’t even try. Never mind that record high low temperatures appear to be happening with increased frequency (we broke a record we just set last year?!), just like a climate model with current levels of CO2 would predict. Not good enough. When you raise alarm, only do so in reference to future warming.

Those are the ground rules. Got it? Good.

14

Why is it that we apparently have a gang rapist sitting on the Supreme Court of the United States and it's no longer on the news? Next shiny new manufactured outrage?

15

No Michael, we don't "live in a state with easy access absentee voting".

Our state, as well as OR and CO, are entirely vote-by-mail states. It's not not easy absentee voting. We're not absent from anything.

16

Any chance of Charles resuming his prolific posting regarding our housing market? I recognize that current market trends are the complete opposite of what Charles' has been predicting for many years now, so his opinions appear largely worthless, but it is still good for a laugh.

19

@15 You're right, officially. I have been voting absentee so long I forgot we adopted a new term when we moved to mail only. Semantically, and contextually, I don't think that sentence is incorrect.

@11 The rules to raising the alarm on climate change? Ha. We've failed to adequately act on climate change for SO LONG, the alarm should be constantly ringing in everyone's ears regardless. "Nope I won’t promise nothing. Nothing is normal no more."

The rapists and terorrists are everywhere!!!! Run!! Hide!!!

Still waiting for you tell us about how you call people nazis, rapists, terrorists, etc to their actual face. I mean, doing on the interwebs is one thing, but I would a tough guy like you would be doing it real life too.....no?

“ I would think..”

Is murdering tens of millions of non-Believers, solely to Overthrow one's Gov't in hopes of installing your very own Sharia Law,* is that a plus or a minus?

I spose it really depends on what you think You might get, in return.

*far far FAR "Right" wing Fundymentalists
(who just want what's Best for Their GOD)
(and for themselves, too! but that's merely just a silly Coincidence!)

Oh and more tax cuts for Multi Billionaires!
They're going Broke!

Any groups organizing for paper mail voting in more states? I will donate.

Bada bing!

26

Humans,
Don't make your dog try wake boarding.
They won't enjoy it.

The more you know.

27

My bad - PA also <1%. If the recount flipped the vote in all three of those states she would have taken it.

28

@19 - Technically, my post was sarcastic.

All the stuff I said was true, but if you believe that global warming is coming, then yesterday’s low of 57 should feel alarming. That might not be statistically rigorous, but it is practically correct.

I personally have mostly given up on us. Humans are too selfish and stupid collectively to change. Agent Smith had it right: we most resemble a virus.

30

@20- I don't know about @18, but I've managed a pretty strong track record. It is entertaining to see how someone spouting hateful rhetoric can be totally shocked, Shocked I Tell You, to be called out for what they are saying. Also entertaining to see how tough many of you think you are. I may be a liberal, and have a general dislike of violence, but I do still hold a few records for penalty minutes from my old hockey days.

31

@11 one cannot "definitely" say much about anything, yet we still buy fire insurance for the house and collision/liability for the car.

Also, these events inscribe themselves in a significant trend of temperature record that is consistent with what we expect from global warming, so although there won't be any "proof" for this particular event, pointing out a possible connection to climate change is a good thing to do. Furthermore, although we can't entirely dismiss natural variability neither can we dismiss climate change given that weather now forms under conditions characteristic of current climate change.

@6 Did you forget that Pennsylvania (0.5% margin) was also part of the recount effort or did you just decide to ignore it?

32

Gaah - I’m getting attacked on both my apparent meaning AND my actual meaning. This irony business is not for the faint of heart.

@31 - See my comment @28.

@29 - That is what I said, ironically. It IS normal. AND abnormal. @31 has it right.

33

Oh, and @29 - sure, a pineapple express is a normal occurence in the sense that it happens from time to time, but one has apparently never happened in recorded times pushing the low temperature up to 57 degrees. Again, it may statistically be not abnormal, but that is a long, long way from saying it’s normal. Funny how deniers don’t understand that statistical margin of error cuts both ways.

Dew points are nice and all, but: the earth is getting warmer, a record high is still a record, we should be alarmed.

35

@33 - No, YOU aren’t getting it. I am not “blaming” the record high low on global warming.

What I am suggesting is that record high temperatures are happening with increasing frequency. Only a fucking idiot wouldn’t find every recent record high as being consistent with climate science’s predictions. That fact counts for 10x any limited mechanical explanation for a specific warmth event.

But thanks for the condescending lecture, asshole. You validated the sarcasm in my original post. What is statistically meaningful isn’t practically meaningful. Let’s wait until 100% of the signal is anthropgenic and then do something! That sounds like a great idea.

Or we could - you know, feel a certain gnawing alarm. Gnawing alarm is the correct healthy feeling.

All that aside, implicit in my original sarcasm was the acknowledgment that this event cannot statistically be laid at the feet of global warming.

Does that make your pedantic heart sing?

Smooches!

Coltrane

36

Oops - @34. But I don’t mind yelling at myself either. I probably deserve it.
