"Art is a means to fight the ills of patriarchy, white supremacy and capitalism and to render the kinder, more human world we want to live in."

Yeah. Sure. Good luck with that.

Well, that sucks. CityArts was a solid arts journal, walking a nice line between esoterica and popular stuff. I'll miss it.

Always sad to see a quality magazine close. It's like another knife in the back of civilization. I still grieve the loss of Look, After Dark, and Ramparts.

I am confused why I should care in the least about the closure of City Arts. It was a terrible local publication that only seemed to push white liberal esoteric nonsense that no one heard of before and will never be heard of again. And when it wasn't this stuff, it seemed to exist purely to benefit the people writing it and their careers.

Take Brett Hamill for existence. Brett Hamill was a straight white male who was a terrible person and comedian. This guy created several hoaxes against venues in this town who wouldn't book him. He ensured the only comedy or comedians written about in City Arts were pieces that would only directly benefit him. And he used City Arts to bully and intimidate people in the comedy scene including using his position as a City Arts writer to bully a female comedian into suicide. And that's just the things he was doing with the magazine.

And for this he was consistently rewarded and pushed by City Arts. And that's just what was happening in comedy, think about what was happening in real art mediums in the city. I can't think of a single positive thing City Arts ever did for the City or Art in the city. Quite frankly it is much better that it is gone and it was an inevitable failure.

I did enjoy their arts section but not their political positions disguised as journalism. I tried to provide feedback to correct errors/misstatements on their political pieces and there was no response--at all. I want to say this to the journalists involved in writing these City Arts pieces: If you want to be a "journalist" and write an "article," include more than one voice in the discussion. City Arts was a tin horn for far left political positioning. That was over 99% activist in my opinion and would not be considered a journalistic endeavor. We don't need any more of that in this city. The Stranger does the job and at least is responsive to feedback. I hope the journalists looking for work will take this to heart and make sure the platforms they work on include 1) fact checking, 2) multiple voices, and 3) responsiveness when they have incorrectly stated the facts.
