Am I the only person who doesn't care? I really believe we much bigger, much more serious problems than this. Of all of the things happening in this country right now, on a minute to minute basis, in the name of the squatter in the WH and every single person aiding and abetting him and all the damage being done and all of the human beings literally being harmed and killed, we're going to focus on tumblr banning porn?

*we have

@1 Ok, stick in the mud troll, what simple pleasures do you partake in to distract you from all the important news stories that we should be paying attention to? Can you take a minute to be just a little disappointed that people have one fewer place to jerk off? Give it a rest.

The only problem with drawn or cartoon porn is that there seems to be a sort of ongoing internet contest to see just how fucked up the stuff can get.

But photo and video porn has a much more serious problem: you can't tell by looking at it whether it was produced with consent or not, particularly if you're inclined to regard things as nonconsensual when they involve certain forms of economic coercion (sex for drugs, sex to pay off personal or family debt to loan sharks, sex for visas or other official paperwork, etc etc).

There's no FDA for free internet porn, no Fair Trade or Conflict-Free certification.

There are a handful of reputable, ethics-forward porn peddlers out there on the internet, of course, but you're out of luck if none of them make a product that wets your whistle, or if you're reluctant to let your credit card company know that you're the kind of person who likes internet porn so much that you're willing to pay for it.

4

@1 - Lighten up. Or better yet, masturbate.

6

Tumblr wants to be in bed with the owner of an app platform. Given their current practices, they can't. It's that simple. It doesn't matter if the child porn was real, just like it doesn't matter if you actually assault/harass women in your workplace - it's #believevictims and all it would take is one charismatic person to bring a circus of a lawsuit.

I do find it hilarious that the LGBTQ Fan Fic world thinks this is about them.

7

Tumblr? Who does Tumblr anymore?

8

Your poor mom. Mishalaneous, you’re lucky you turned out as good as you are...you sneaky little thing.

I'm not against porn. There a lots of other ways to access porn, amiright? Or god forbid (as someone above mentioned) masturbate, only use your imagine OR (OMG) have a sexual relationship with a real person! Tumblr banning porn just doesn't seem like a priority problem to me. Apparently I have been schooled by the commenters of SLOG that that opinion is "wrong." rolls eyes Definitely it's a defcon 1 priority among the people reading this blog.

@7

The queer horny internet.

First, imagine a mob of toddlers on a massive sugar high, screaming in circles around a room full of action figures, stuffed animals, and nintendo video games.

Now add about 15 years to everyone's age, but keep them in more or less the same clothes, and round up the toys and keep attaching dicks and tits to them until you run out of glue.

@12

If you look closely, you'll see that in one group all of the guns are made out of colorful plastic.

Tumblr says it's eliminating porn. What Tumblr is actually doing is eliminating all images of naked human beings, male or female, and many images showing bare skin on clothed humans. Case in point, a friend posted a photo of his husband in a bathing suit cut like what's called boy shorts, with plenty of bare chest and leg showing, sitting in a chair on their patio. Nothing even remotely suggestive about the photo. It wasn't up five full minutes before the geniuses at Tumblr had flagged it as inappropriate. Up to now, their protocol was three flaggings and you're taken down. People have invested years in their sites, many of them working around ill-paid full-time jobs. Now they have to figure out how to capture what they want/need to save, before Tumblr rips it out of their hands, because Tumblr has said if they take you down, your entire blog is forever inaccessible to you and to anyone else. Frankly, the pattern of acquisitions surrounding Tumblr makes me think they have a religious, Puritanical Board on the new owners. It will be a trip watching the platform fail.

15

@1 yo you are whatabouting. You wouldn't like that if raindrop did it, right?

17

See, clearly the solution is to just simply ban everything.
Anything is offensive to someone, so removing everything ensures that no-one will be offended by something, and everyone will be offended by nothing.

MORE NOTHING!

Wait...was this what 'Neverending Story' and 'Mirror Mask' were about with the "Nothing" that slowly erases everything? Did the "Nothing" start with porn?

@1 - "First they came for the porn, and I did nothing, for I did not look at porn.
Then...
...etc. etc....
Then they came for me, and no one did anything, because they were all down in the Ant Tanks below ground working in subterranean prison-factories, while the rich ruled the Earth's surface with drones & robot armies, constantly at war with one another."

see now?

RIP Tumblr. You were a hideously clunky platform and your staff couldn't moderate to save their lives, but you were our platform, or so we thought. Let that be a lesson to us not to give into brand loyalty.

On the flip side, I am giddy as a schoolgirl to see it on December 18th when the place will be a ghost town (though probably packed with spectators also eager to watch it go under). It's deserved it for a while now, and there's a great lesson to be learned here about how not to run a major site. Its algorithmic inability to distinguish what is and isn't adult just means there's no safe user base here. If Tumblr's staff was unable to handle the workload of sorting through its porn to get rid of child porn, how are they expecting to sort through every single complaint about improperly-flagged content? They haven't just nuked the porn, they've nuked their entire site.

There's no hope for it. It's pointless for them to grovel and beg to be let back into Apple's good graces when there won't be any user base left to use their (very poorly designed!) app anyways. RIP indeed.

It’s a shame. The tumblr porn I came across was hot, tasteful, and hot. No easy feat. I will always have a soft spot for it. RIP(orn). Back to scouring PornHub for hot amateurs.

For xina@1, & anyone else who doesn't quite get the intersectional connection between the fundamental cause of human liberation and Tumblr's panic-ban of anything looking like a (semi-)nude human body:

https://boingboing.net/2018/12/03/the-death-of-tumblr.html

I'm pissed for lots of reasons ---including the constant 'Puritanical' efforts to make the human body in all its nuances "off-limits" and "dirty" and functionally "undiscussable"--- but more personally bcz after Tumblr already required an age-based login process to see all the smut, and me slowing watching all the smut disappear behind "you need a legit login" block-pages.... I finally created a login a few days ago... and now it's all going to disappear again.

The promise of the Internet was so great... back in the 90s, the golden-age. Freedom, "reputation economy", true anonymity, cypherpunks, Usenet, the Well, Wikipedia, slipping around right under the authorities noses... it was the promise of the Enlightenment made technologically possible... "once everyone has access to the Internet..." ..we wistfully imagined the glories of widespread knowledge & self-education. A flourishing of culture and enlightened self-determination.

And now it's all going to hell::: censorship, "death threats" & doxxing, idiot Nazis, commercialism/ads, insidious psychological tricks to keep ppl addicted to Facehook, echo chambers & emotionalist political delusions,,, and finally legislators in "bi-partisan" bills using 'child porn' & 'sex trafficking' as the wedge issues to encroach on free spaces and ban/control free humans engaging in consensual activities that hurt no-one.

21

Sounds like a great business opportunity for someone to step and start hosting something like what they're shutting down. Or you can keep whining about it going away...

22

@21 There are plenty of places that have been lining up to take on the exodus of all of Tumblr's content. You are not even remotely the first to think of it and us "whining" is us mourning the loss of a single shared space which fosters communities while we pack up and leave, scattering across various sites. We are genuinely mourning the loss of a space which facilitates circles of users which will now inevitably break apart as they get spread across the rest of the internet, and we are justifiably disappointed that Tumblr is MySpacing itself (very soon the term will probably be "Tumblring") on such an unpleasant note. Thank you for making constructive comments from now on, it's appreciated.

I've seen it likened to burning a house down to get rid of the vermin. Sure, the pests might be dead, but now there's no house, either. And yes, there are several platforms that people will scatter off to, including PornHub. Apparently they host individual channels where people can post whatever they like, including art and text posts.
