On Monday afternoon, tens of thousands of Twitter users rallied together to make sure Chicago rapper CupcakKe was okay after she tweeted that she was about to end her life. The following day, the Chicago Police Department confirmed that CupcakKe, born Elizabeth Eden Harris, was alive and had been transported to the hospital for mental health reasons. Yesterday, she returned to her social media profiles to reassure and thank her fans for their support. From Twitter:
“I’ve been fighting with depression for the longest ..sorry that I did public last night but I’m ok .I went to the hospital & im finally getting the help that I need to get through , be happy , & deliver great music . thanks for all the prayers but please don’t worry bout me.”

For the uninitiated, CupcakKe is most known for her very sexually explicit songs—like the one where she talks about going “duck duck goose” on a dick and, in the accompanying NSFW music video, wears see-through lingerie and rolls around patting dildos of all colors and sizes on their little heads. Not only is it full some of the greatest rap lyrics in history, but it's also honestly a genius concept—who hasn’t wanted to pat dicks like that!?

She’s even gotten her own “Elders React To” video and Lil' Kim, queen of freak shit, called her nasty, a compliment of the highest order. CupcakKe’s candidness in her songs encompasses all areas of her life—rapping about being molested as a teenager, growing up poor, and police brutality. She's the Renaissance woman of modern hip-hop.

So, even though she told me not to worry and tweeted out a picture today of her looking cute in a red velvet tracksuit, I’m still worried! CupcakKe is really fucking important. Her music is fearless. As a dark skin, sex and body-positive female rapper, CupcakKe occupies an important and more-often-than-not unsupported space in the music industry.

The work she does in centering black female pleasure and desire, of embracing and making her body the epicenter of that pleasure, is vital. When listening to CupcakKe's lyrically limber songs, I feel like I become that brazen and sexually bold version of myself, who revels in knowing what she wants and asking for it. But in being a trailblazer in any field, especially in sexuality, and living a very public life, the energy put out doesn't always come back. I hope CupcakKe is surrounded by people who love her and is in a situation where she can get better and thrive. What she does is fucking noble and should be recognized as such.

Take a moment today to listen to any of CupcakKe's songs, like this performance at the 2017 Lollapalooza where she gets the entire crowd to moan to her song "CPR" which contains one of my favorite-ever descriptions of really great sex: "Dick twisting in my stomach like food poisoning":

God, she even sounds great rapping over a ukelele.
