Shutdown delays Everett airport: Commercial flights out of the brand-spanking-new Paine Field terminal in Everett have been pushed back by at least three weeks. The FAA officials needed to sign off on the last environmental assessment are on furlough, currently. Alaska and United are hedging their bets on when the shutdown will end, it seems. Alaska now plans to start flights on March 4, and United is aiming for March 31.
Edgar Martinez made it in the Baseball Hall of Fame: It only took 10 years! Seattle is elated. Here's a post from Lookout Landing about the whole thing.

Since I'm no authority on baseball, and you all remind me constantly that I am no authority on baseball, I'm outsourcing commentary. This is how Seattle feels:

I’ve sworn off of rooting for the Mariners because of how the organization tried to extort King County out of funds that should have been used for affordable housing last year. But this is good news. Edgar was probably the 2nd best hitter of his generation next to Tony Gwynn.

Supreme Court votes against praying football coach: The Bremerton High School coach kept praying with his players on the field. That's uh, not okay. Anyhoo, the coach was fired. He said his freedom of speech was violated. You know how it goes. But, the Supreme Court shot down his appeal to get his job back.

Puppy party causes power outage: Capitol Hill plunged into darkness Saturday after a renegade canopy got tangled in some power lines. The canopy was being used as a party tent at a rooftop birthday celebration for a dog. Thanks to Capitol Hill Seattle Blog for the public service journalism.

There's a new law to protect your online privacy is being considered in Olympia: Washington State Senator Reuven Carlyle (D-Seattle) has introduced a bill in Olympia that, according to GeekWire, "would require companies that collect personal data to be transparent with users about the type of information they’re recording, how they use it, and whether it is shared with third parties."
Victory for LA public school teachers: After a weeklong strike, Los Angeles Unified School District teachers have reached a tentative deal with school officials. They're getting a 6 percent pay raise and caps on class sizes.

Headline of the week: Already? It's only Tuesday? I don't know if we're going to be able to beat this one, folks. State Department cancels border security conference due to shutdown over border security
Chinese app will tell you if you're standing next to someone in debt: The new social credit policy in China is getting wilder and wilder by the day. This app, rolled out to northern China, allows users to monitor a map of "deadbeat debtors" by showing them the debtors in their area! That's a long way from the hot singles in our area. Maybe they're one and the same. Jokes aside, this shit is nuts. It's just the latest development in China's intrusive social credit policy that is an extension of a person's personal credit score.
