I love listening to good music on long, dreary commutes. It's the only thing that gets me through humping it from the city to the provincial village north of the lake where I'm living with my parents (the city of Bothell, and, yes, I'm moving soon).

Lately, Portland-based band Y La Bamba has really been holding it down for me. Their music is dreamy, fun, and a bit melancholic, ready to receive you and move you. Bandleader Luz Elena Mendoza's voice seems to grace us from another plane—knowing and strong.

Today, they released a music video for the third single, "Boca Llena," off their album Mujeres that will drop next month. Though the song is bright, Mendoza says it's about "the tools I have gained through trauma and all the details that I have learned to see through difficult times." The video is like a celebration of enduring the hard stuff. There are balloons. Sparkly tops. Pom-poms made of paper. Mendoza dancing with her friends in the street, at a party. It's great—this is sonic candy.

Y La Bamba will be playing a show here with Seattle band Tres Leches on February 10 at the Tractor Tavern. Come through—and have a good commute home.
