Mayor Jenny Durkan had a melanoma removed from her knee last week but subsequent medical tests show that she is now entirely cancer-free, according to Stephanie Formas, Durkan's chief of staff.

"The mayor is doing well and can happily report the tests show she is now cancer-free," Formas said in an email.

Melanoma is a form of skin cancer that can become dangerous when it spreads or metastasizes throughout the body.

Formas said the outpatient surgery did not require an overnight hospital stay and that Durkan has been working from home since the surgery. Formas added that the mayor has been closely following the city's response to this week's snowstorm and has been monitoring the city's preparations for possibly another foot of snow later this week.

Formas said the mayor expects a quick recovery.

"Sheā€™ll also have a knee brace over the next few weeks, but is confident her knee will be back and ready for a rematch in ā€˜horseā€™ with Sue Bird," Formas said. "If Sue is up to it, of course."
