Editors on vacation today? to vs too? you vs your? All in the first two sentences?

2

Those poor Elk could probably use a little Global Warming.

3

@1 An intern. I weep for the future ...

4

I find grammar correction comments more annoying than the actual errors in the article.

5

Yes, spring will be here soon. Check back in 2 weeks.

6

@4 How do you feel about the Stranger's articles criticizing others' bad grammar?

8

"Global Warming" is a gift that will NEVER quit giving.

9

@6: I suppose it depends on the context.

10

AOC wants to root the REAL racists from the Democrat Caucus...

In her defense of Rep. Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez points her finger at 26 of her Democratic colleagues, saying they were racists for supporting a proposal to notify immigration authorities if illegal aliens are caught trying to buy a gun.

Ocasio-Cortez argued that the discussion about bigotry within the Democratic caucus shouldn't be aimed at Omar's anti-Semitism, but rather the 26 Democrats who she says are racist.

Democrat: You are a racist.
Other Democrat: No; YOU are a racist!
Don't argue, Girls, you both are right...

11

@9 Hmm, OK. How do you feel about not throwing stones while living in a glass house?

12

"Florida has sea turtles and if they have to go straw-less then that is a sacrifice I'm willing to make."

If those poor turtles can't use straws, then how in the hell are they going to drink to stay hydrated!? C'mon... Think, Timothy!

13

Mark Zuckerburgher, or Zucky, as I like to call him,
at the Podium in today's New Yorker daily cartoon:

“Facebook is changing. From now on, sharing is private.
War is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength.”

The guy's a Genius.
Or is it billionaire...

14

Would Joe Biden really shake things up though? Much as I like him, it's not like the Dems have a particularly great track record with popular VPs from successful administrations going on to win the election against GOP imbeciles.

15

@11: First you have to answer if you came before or after the egg.

16

@11 Me, personally? Before.

18

@14 - There haven't been that many lately. Truman in '48, Johnson in '64. And only Mondale and Gore since then failed. Not too bad.

19

17
now now KlitzekleinWurst;
we have expressed no opinion about Omar;
only commented on Pelosi and the Democrap's efforts to censure her.
You are the one assuming.

20

The hard part is learning to differentiate between the current Israeli government and the world population of folks who are culturally or religiously Jewish. They are not even close to the same thing. I wish Jstreet would step up on this one, maybe give some political cover.

22

Biden must be concerned about splitting the "centrist" vote during the primaries, and given the current anti-establishment dynamics, a "centrist" young/minority/woman candidate would have a much better shot at the presidency than Biden. In fact, a Biden candidacy for the general frankly scares me as his track record (Iraq war vote, etc) would be detrimental to generating the voter turnout necessary to put away Trump and regain the senate. It's a risk with all "centrists" but even more so with Biden.

@17 islamophobic bigots are often also antisemitic too. It was quite evident in Charlottesville

23

21
It doesn't say that anywhere.

You must be thinking of speaker Pelosi:

"Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives called on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) to apologize for using “anti-Semitic tropes and prejudicial accusations about Israel’s supporters.” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Majority Whip James Clyburn, and others released a statement Monday calling Omar’s comments “deeply offensive.” “We condemn these remarks and we call upon Congresswoman Omar to immediately apologize for these hurtful comments,” the statement read."

Is that what you read?

27

I like plastic straws. I am a bad person.

28

Ban straws or not, they're a drop in the bucket either way.

29

I have a sense that those 500 ISIS fighters who surrendered are going to be treated the same way that ISIS treated it's prisoners. At least one can hope.

30

No one really wants Biden for president. You are just trying to distract and detract the people who want Bernie for President.

Biden was/is one of the most conservative Democrats; it would be like voting in John McCain.

No thank you.

31

90-95% of plastic polluting our oceans comes from just 10 rivers, mainly in Asia, none in North America or Europe.

But yeah, pretend plastic bags in Spokane and straws in Seattle are the problem.

32

@31:

Well, they're definitely not part of the solution, so...

33

Calling out the Isreali aparthied state is the Duty of those representing us in Congress. Is it anti-Isreali-policy, to call them out for, their open-air concentration camp, and Horrific treatmen of protesters at their border? Fuck, yes. And thank you, freshman (rookie) Representative Omar, for doing so.

Is it anti-Semitism?
Fuck. NO.

But don't take my word for it. Here's 'Matt' from Vermont, from a comment in today's NYT article on the subject:

"I'm with my Senator (Sanders) on this one:

'We must not,... equate anti-Semitism with legitimate criticism of the right-wing, Netanyahu government in Israel. Rather, we must develop an even-handed Middle East policy which brings Israelis and Palestinians together for a lasting peace. What I fear is going on in the House now is an effort to target Congresswoman Omar as a way of stifling that debate. That's wrong.'"

Once again, Bernie gets it right -- while pragmatically advocating for a peaceful solution.

34

One more.

"Israel’s staunchest political allies in America are not even American Jews, but rather right-wing Evangelical Christians who view the Jewish State through the prism of religious prophecy, the egregious and now deadly growth of a genuinely terrifying anti-Semitism on the political right has been soft-pedaled, while hysterical over-reactions to leftist criticisms of Israel become weeks-long national scandals requiring Congressional action.

The criticisms of Omar show the triumph of a meaningless opportunism over the far more difficult work of building solidarity with other minorities in the United States against a wave of intolerance and violence that is explicitly and inarguably a product of the political right."

35

@34 How's the Gay Pride March planning going in Egypt/Jordan/Syria/Iran etc. etc. this year?

36

Unsure.
Getchyur Tickets, yet, Pinkwarsh, this Asshole?

37

@36 Unsure for sure. Kind of hard to have gay rights parades when it's still legal to execute gays in most mideast islamic countries.

38

37

Sooooo - you wanna protest far far FAR "right" wing fascism / Fundamentalism, too, Pinky?

Excellent.
'Bout time.

39

Kristofarian, calling out Israel is acceptable, but stating the Jews have a dual loyalty is not. Jews have been accused of dual loyalty for a thousand years. Please reference the article below from Rahm Emanuel, current Mayor of Chicago and former Chief of Staff under Obama.

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2019/03/ilhan-omars-dual-loyalty-charge-was-anti-semitic/584314/

40

39

"... calling out Israel is acceptable, but stating the Jews have a dual loyalty is not."

I'm sorry -- a dual Loyalty -- to what?

41

39

You mean, good ole ... "[Rahm] Emanuel, meanwhile, served as a senior adviser to President Bill Clinton for much of his administration, counseling him against taking progressive positions on everything from LGBT issues and gun rights to economic policy and immigration. He was elected to Congress in 2002 as a pro-Iraq War candidate and ran the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee in 2006, recruiting conservative candidates across the country. He became Barack Obama’s chief of staff in 2009, again counseling moderation and doing battle with progressives."

THIS is the guy we should be listening to?

https://theintercept.com/2019/03/06/rahm-emanual-mayor-black-women/

42

@40 Dual Loyalty to America and Israel...

43

39

One more.

Speaking of Dual Loyalty:
(and nasty, nasty anti-Semitism):

"SO LET ME get this straight: The president of the United States has called neo-Nazis 'very fine people'; retweeted neo-Nazis; told an audience of Jewish-Americans that Israel is 'your country'; and indulged in viciously anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. While running for office, he tweeted an image of Hillary Clinton inside a Star of David, next to a pile of cash; told an audience of Jewish donors, 'You want to control your politicians, that’s fine'; and put out a campaign ad that attacked three rich and powerful Jewish figures. While a private citizen, he insisted only 'short guys that wear yarmulkes' should count his money and kept a book of Adolf Hitler’s speeches on his bedside table.

He has never apologized for any of this. Nor has he been censured by Congress."

This Shit starts at the Top and rapidly runs downhill.

44

@43 But Trump!

This has nothing to do with Trump.

45

So, Jews can have dual Citizenship, but never Loyalty?

Tell us, oh nameless entity, how the fuck does THAT work?

(That's right, Trumpfy exists in a fucking Vacuum
and NOTHING He does, matters. Ever.
How Silly of me to have forgotten.
Thnx)!

46

Oh and btw, their loyalty, I'm not presently all that concerned with.
Should I be?

47

Ok dude you really don’t get it and I really don’t think I can help you understand... partly because you don’t want to. Which is upsetting because you are the person that will argue to the end that this isn’t anti-Semitic, while Jews left and right say it is. Just call a spade a spade and be done with it

48

Okay. Will do: Calling out Isreal's Goverment for their ILLEGAL treatment of those in their open-air Concentration Camps is NOT anti-Semitic.

Your a bright person -- explain to me, please, how it might be Anti-Semitic?

My turn: So, Jews can have Dual Citizenship, but never ever dual Loyalty?
Tell us, oh nameless entity, how the fuck does THAT work?

I'm hoping your answers will be most enlightening.
Thanks!

Oh and btw, their loyalty, I'm not presently all that concerned with.
Should I be?

49

Again: ''We must not,... equate anti-Semitism with legitimate criticism of the right-wing, Netanyahu government in Israel. Rather, we must develop an even-handed Middle East policy which brings Israelis and Palestinians together for a lasting peace." --B. Sanders (I,VT)

What are Bernie and I missing here, UNR?
Put up. Or shut up.
If you please.
THNX!

50

Many countries have dual citizenship with the United States. Loyalty is not the same as citizenship.

You can criticize Israel for their policies and many American Jews will agree with you. But questioning American Jews’ loyalty goes down a dark path that history has seen too many times.

How would you feel if someone questioned whether or not you were loyal because of where your parents were born?

51

"You can criticize Israel for their policies and many American Jews will agree with you."

You can criticize Israel for their policies and many Isreali Jews will agree with you, too. Sadly, American airwaves don't show us any of that.

I wonder why.

"But questioning American Jews’ loyalty goes
down a dark path that history has seen too many times."

Ok. Fair enough. Then let's not.

Can you separate criticism of Netanyahoo and his
far far FAR right wing government from Anit-Semitism?

And then, there's that open air Concentracion Camp
right next door. That Isreal has by the balls? They control
EVERYTHING. Do you see no Injustice there?

Most countries would beg to differ, sir.
Me too.

Is it still Legal to utter the words Boycott Divest & Sanction, all on the same day?

52

'Concentracion'
I had to look it up
it's spanishish for
'focused' I think
as in a tight clusterfuck.

53

"Anit-Semitism"?

Who Edits this shit?

54

"Is Anti-Semitism Exceptional?
The inevitable decline of left-wing philo-Semitism."

By Ross Douthat

"This is what the left seems to want in the Omar controversy, and what I suspect it will eventually get: a left-of-center politics that remembers the Holocaust as one great historical tragedy among many, that judges Israel primarily on its conservative and nationalist political orientation, rather than on its status as a Jewish sanctuary, and that regards the success of American Jews as a reason for them to join white Gentiles in check-your-privilege self-criticism, ceding moral authority to minority groups who are more immediately oppressed.

(This last shift was helpfully distilled by James Clyburn, the Democratic House whip, who defended Omar last week by basically saying that the Holocaust was a long time ago and her personal experience as a refugee and Muslim immigrant was more immediate and relevant.)

https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/09/opinion/is-anti-semitism-exceptional.html?action=click&module=Opinion&pgtype=Homepage

55

Okay, last one, I (probably!) promise:

From the comments on the same article (@ 54):

Ross, I'm a liberal Jew, but I'm an American and owe no allegiance to a state that is increasingly driven by extremist religious views and comfortable turning non-Jews into second class citizens.

I don't view anti- Netanyahu views as anti- Israeli and I don't believe that a condemnation of Israeli policy makes anyone anti-semetic. Ms. Omar's views can also be found in the Israeli peace movement. Are they also antisemitic?

Doug, SF [CA], March 9

56

Okay, this second comment sums up my feelings, as well:

"When Donald Trump encouraged white supremacists, and pointedly failed to disavow the notorious David Duke, that was anti-Semitic.

When Donald Trump said there were 'very fine people' in Charlottesville chanting 'Jews will not replace us,' that was anti-Semitic.

When Donald Trump initially responded to the hate-driven murder of innocents in Temple by flatly saying that they should have had an armed guard, that was anti-Semitic.

And Republicans' response to Trump's behavior? Barely a peep. So it rings more than a little hollow to hear their outrage now over Ms. Omar's remarks, or about the BDS movement.

Republicans are simply trying to stifle dissent about Israel's far right agenda with the very serious, but false equivalence of, anti-Semitism."
