In a stroke of horrible luck, 78-year-old jazz-saxophone legend Pharoah Sanders fell and broke his hip right before his four-night run at Jazz Alley accompanying keyboardist Joey DeFrancesco, according to a message from the Seattle venue. The great Gary Bartz (Miles Davis, McCoy Tyner, Max Roach, Donald Byrd, Roy Ayers, Sanders's Deaf Dumb Blind [Summun Bukmun Umyun]) will replace Sanders tonight through Saturday while Azar Lawrence (Miles Davis, Elvin Jones, Ike & Tina Turner Band, Roberta Flack) will do so on Sunday. Here's hoping Pharoah Sanders has a speedy recovery.
