All joking aside, a significant piece of history was lost, and that is sad. I’ve never seen the building myself, however, I understand it was something of an architectural marvel, and we are all the poorer for its loss. I would rather have seen the building repurposed into something more useful, such as a hospital or a homeless shelter or even a museum much as Hagia Sofia was, rather than an outpost of the Catholic Church. That said, any time we lose something of beauty, the world becomes uglier in the absence.

As for the immigration panic, well, Cher’s a pop star, not a brilliant political mind. We really should end the unfortunate practice of expecting those working in the entertainment industry to serve as godlike polymaths we elicit the opinions of upon every topic. If I want to know how to use Autotune or to stage an endless series of farewell tours (no this time, we really mean it!), I would certainly avail of Cher’s in depth knowledge on the subject. When it comes to funding immigration policy, I’m more likely to consult an economist.
