Speaking of gender gaps, isn't there enough documentation to replace Tim yet with a woman who can hit a deadline? Surely some 7 AM lady out there is hungry to make her mark on the world of journalism.

2

I agree with @1, and I suspect the co-byline is a generous sharing if credit for a post that Nathalie did at least 90% of.

3

The logic of intersectionalism:

"Fewer women are biking to work because they have other responsibilities - men should bike less!"

Also, that's an incorrect assumption (that childcare drives the bicycling gender gap, which exists everywhere), you'd find the same gap if you only measured under 30 childless people. Women don't bike because they're concerned about the clothes they're able to wear and ruining their hair/makeup, they're worried about safety when riding in traffic, and they're worried about their fitness levels (especially in hilly Seattle).

4

Women are still more likely to do a lot of the parenting so having to pick up kids after work, which can make biking impractical. There’s the goddamn patriarchy ruining something as benign as biking.

I like how blaming "the patriarchy" for these things depends on making women slaves to their statistical likelihoods vs suggesting any kind of autonomous/mutual decisions for any actions otherwise.

5

How nice that the people who almost died fighting fascists like Prezinazi AntiChrist while seeing their friends and comrades get blown to smithereens get to celebrate the D-Day anniversary with him and his ghoulish, grifting, white trash family.

7

@4: It is considered very progressive now to believe that women are not fully people with their own agency or individuality, but merely exist as empty vessels that can only react to social pressures.

It seems backwards to me, but to each their own.

8

The article Nathalie links to states that "the lack of a connected network of bikes lanes is at the top of the list" of reasons why women don't bike more. And Jenny Durkan, a woman, is the most anti-cyclist mayor we've had in decades, ripping out protected bike lanes left and right.

Blame the patriarchy? Not for this.

9

@4

I love that line because I knew it was going to trigger people who are just going to take it too seriously.

11

@8:

In case you missed the memo, women can aid and abet the Patriarchy - just ask any of them that voted for the Cheeto-hued shit-gibbon currently spending $1,000,000 to book hotel rooms in London.

12

"about three times as likely, in fact. A recent poll said that 9 percent of men bike commute in Seattle, while only 3 percent of women do so."

This comment will be discounted as quibbly/nerdly but beware (oh beware!) of "N times" if one is dividing percentages taken from two different populations. One may not in general get away with stuff like: "X percent of men" (of all men? men discovered near workplaces? which men?) vs a different sized population "Y percent of women", so the ratio of folks is X/Y.

13

If I were a woman, I wouldn't want to be out amongst the asshole male cyclists of this city either.
God those guys are douchebags. It negates any benefit to the environment they are providing.

15

@14
Have fun in Boston.

17

How is i///u pronounced? The straight pride flag features the trucker mud flap girl.

One thought on the bicycle thing. Curious if the disparity has to do with getting sweaty and then being at work like that. Generally speaking women's get-ready-for-work routine is a lot more involved, so perhaps that keeps them from biking to work. I'm a dude, and being all sweaty and hot when you get to work in the morning isn't something I'm interested in. Couldn't imagine the makeup, hair, all that stuff, is easy to do at the office.

20

@18: anecdotally, yes. that's why Mrs. Solomon bought an electric bike. women who want/need to look sharp at work don't want to ride bikes and then have to put themselves together in the locker room. is that the whole reason? who the fuck knows? maybe someone should ASK THEM.

none of this means there shouldn't be a network of safe bike lanes where broad-brushing commenters like @13 can't hit you with their vehicles.

21

I thought people in Seattle got dogs instead of having babies?

22

LOL
Never heard of him before... but this Crowder guy is hysterical! Thanks for promoting him (I’m going to have to start following him). He’s obviously gay as a whistle himself.

As one gay guy to another... Some one needs to man up and get a thicker skin if the wants a career in the public eye. Some one making fun of you is not a hate crime, (See: Mathew Shepard).

23

If we just returned Seattle streets to their original purpose of only being for cyclists and streetcars, none of this would be a problem.

25

@23 And logs. Don't forget the logs.

26

less than 20% of Seattle households have children so kids ain't keeping 80% of you gals from hoping om a bike...

(raising children is the most selfless noble giving thing a person can do.
it is telling that super Leftist Seattle (and San Francisco) are at the bottom of the list for folks doing so. Talking the talk is soooo much easier than walking the walk of giving and serving...)

27

@26 -
Raising North American children is probably the worst possible thing you can do for the planet. Those who don't are actually doing far more for future generations than anyone else.

28

I doubt the gender gap is explained by women worried about their hair & makeup. As the article noted, the gender gap is higher here than in other cities; on the other hand, women here seem to be less fashion-conscious and makeup-wearing than in a lot of other places (at least on the West Coast).

30

27
folks who actually believe that would commit suicide if they really cared about the planet and the human race.

31

Oh course, we've already established Leftists find talking the talk of saving the planet soooo much easier than walking the walk...

32

@27 - Not having kids is perfectly consistent with a desire to take better care of the planet and I don't see how killing yourself is necessary. Doing things in your own life that lessen your impact is a perfectly reasonable way to live. It's also consistent with walking the walk. Or biking the bike. Or any of a hundred other things that a lot of people, including leftists, actually do every day. It's also interesting that you assume I am a leftist - I did not make the assumption that you are a Wacko Christian Quiverfull believer.

Breeding like fucking rabbits, as you seem to espouse, is in no way consistent with caring about the planet or anyone/anything else (except possibly your own brats).

33

@32 YOU ARE SOMEONE'S KID, DOOFUS
