Washington State is getting older, King County is getting younger: It's the techies! The infusion of young people in the last 10 years or so is keeping our county young while the rest of the state (besides Whitman County, where Washington State University is) and the rest of the country age. King County is one of only six counties out of the 100 most populous in the country where the population is getting younger. Technology really is the fountain of youth, huh. Well, I could claim that more confidently if the only state "with a decline of nearly two years in its median age [was] North Dakota," according to the Seattle Times.

Seattle Center ceremony welcomes 500 new Americans: Before we get into all the Trumpian bullshit from yesterday, let's celebrate the good stuff that happened on the Fourth of July. Like, for instance, the 500 people from 80 countries who were sworn in as American citizens at the Seattle Center. It was one of 110 naturalization events nationwide that saw 7,500 people welcomed in as citizens.

It rained on Trump's military parade: The Fourth of July celebration happened. I'm not sure if it was everything he'd ever wanted, but there were tanks and planes and he got to pretend he gave a shit about the military. President Donald Trump spoke for 45 minutes and kept the speech fairly apolitical by his standards. People stood in the pouring rain. Trump was behind bulletproof glass. I didn't follow it too closely while it was happening, but here are some tweets from people who did.

How I feel about the Fourth of July this year: This is my last blurb about Independence Day. I swear.

Wait times may get worse after new Sea-Tac Airport terminal opens: Wasn't the whole point of adding a new international arrivals facility to cut down on waiting? With about a year to go before the new terminal is open, Senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray have expressed concern that staffing will be inadequate and customers will suffer. With projected staffing models, they showed that wait times will be two to three times higher in the new terminal than they are now.

Bad news for Oregon freeloaders: Oregonians can't get their sales tax vetoed in Washington anymore as of July 1. Well, they just can't get it automatically vetoed. A new bill signed into law this year made it so that the automatic sales tax exemption no longer exists. Oregonians can still save their receipts and apply for reimbursement later. Still, Washington businesses are worried that it will impact them, since cheap Oregonians love to frequent their shops and demand no sales tax.

Nerve-transfer surgery is a game changer: An Australian doctor is making waves with a pioneering nerve-transfer surgery that allows paralyzed patients to regain some movement in their hands. In this trial, tetraplegic patients receive a nerve from a donor's shoulder into their paralyzed arm muscles. Slowly, patients have been seeing improvements to their hand functions.

The Vatican will unearth an old tomb to put a mystery to rest: In 1983, Emanuela Orlandi, a 15-year-old in Rome, disappeared. A few months ago, the family's lawyer received a letter that ominously said, "If you want to find Emanuela, search where the angel looks" with a picture of an angel statue in the Teutonic Cemetery inside the Vatican. At the family's request, the Vatican is looking into the new lead and will dig up the grave under the statue. The tombs will be opened on July 11.

That woman could face 20 years in prison: Police in Texas are looking for the woman who licked some Walmart ice cream and put the carton back. She could face 2 to 20 years in prison for a second-degree felony charge of tampering with a consumer product. The moral of the story is don't do stupid shit—and, if you do stupid shit, don't film it.

Multiple earthquakes rock Southern California: A 6.4 magnitude earthquake rattled the Inland Empire on Thursday. Its epicenter was close to the Mojave Desert. My mom still felt it in LA. Her first reaction was to take to Twitter and send a bunch of tweets to The Stranger. Her first one asked if we were okay. We're in Seattle, Mom. But we appreciate the sentiment. At 4:07 a.m. Friday morning, there was another earthquake, this time a 5.4 magnitude west of Searles Valley. I think my mom was asleep for that one ’cause I did not receive any texts or tweets.
