Not quite Vision Zero: So far, in 2019, there have been 101 serious injuries on Seattle streets out of 98 collisions, the Seattle Times reports. Ten of those collisions proved fatal. Seattle's Vision Zero aims to eliminate road deaths and injuries by 2030, but at this pace—around 190 injuries and deaths annually—that seems unlikely.

Edgar is in the Hall of Fame: Mariners fans rejoice, Edgar Martinez, after 10 tries on the ballot, has finally been inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The designated hitter retired in 2004 after 18 successful years on the Mariners. This was his last year of eligibility—which is crazy considering the award for designated hitters is named after Martinez and he didn't have a spot in the Hall of Fame—but he made it in with around 85 percent of the vote.

Superior Court judges keep throwing in the towel gavel: There's a wave of judges retiring statewide in Washington, especially in the King County Superior Court. The current generation of judges, many of whom have been on the bench for more than 20 years, are retiring, which means that all of our judges are pretty inexperienced. The Seattle Times reports that "60 percent of King County’s 53 Superior Court judges have six years of experience or less, and 43% have served for four years or less." Old judges are hosting classes and mentorship programs to get the new judges up to speed. Apparently, it takes about four years for a judge to really figure out how to be a judge.

Here's that summer thing I've been hearing so much about: The weather will turn warm this week.

Tacoma traffic-stop ends in gunfire: This guy was pulled over during a routine traffic stop. But, instead of getting his license and registration ready, he jumped out of his black Jeep with a rifle. The officer told him to put the gun down and, when the suspect didn't listen, he opened fire. The suspect was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. What did he have in that Jeep??

A narc app for NIMBYs: These fliers are popping up around Seattle. Seems like an asshole move to use and a waste of resources. Don't be that guy.

Alaska's police force has criminal records: In 14 counties, there are 34 police officers that are convicted criminals. In the small rural town of Stebbins, the entire seven-person police department is made up of people who had all been charged with domestic violence charges. This is especially troublesome for women and native women who already face barriers when it comes to reporting abuse.

An attack on Hong Kong protesters: The protests in Hong Kong are on-going. They started originally because of legislation that would allow extradition to mainland China. But, after Hong Kong chief executive Carrie Lam threw it out, the protests continued as a means to throw her out of office and also protest police brutality. Most recently, a mob of so-called "thugs" attacked protesters at a train station. Many people were injured. The attack also, according to some protesters, was ignored by the police and, perhaps, supported by the pro-government faction.

This is my favorite video from the weekend: Shaquille O'Neal is 7'1". There were pictures of him in the front row of this music festival grinning but this video of him moshing is even better.

Equifax ponies up: The credit bureau exposed sensitive information of nearly half the U.S. population in 2017. It's payment time. Equifax will pay at least $650 million. That money will go toward ending investigations by every state, D.C., and Puerto Rico, payments to victims, and 10 years of free credit monitoring for victims.

India shoots for the moon: India launched Chandrayaan-2 today. In 50 days, it's expected to land on the South Pole of the moon. About 7,200 people gathered to watch the spaceship's launch today.

North Carolina man dies in a freak accident at the beach: The 37-year-old father of six was playing in the waves when one knocked him back into the sand. He broke his neck and his throat swelled so much that his brain was deprived of oxygen. He died the next day at the hospital.

Puerto Rico's governor refuses to resign: Despite constant protests, Gov. Ricardo Rosselló will not resign. He said he will step down from the head of the pro-statehood party and will not be seeking re-election next year, but he will not resign. Thousands have gathered for what is being pegged as Puerto Rico's biggest protest in history.
