I vote for the communist flag with a 12 on it.

2

flag #10 reminds me of the Gonzo symbol's peyote button. Good for the designer for keeping Hunter S. alive and well in northwest.

3

Tell us again, which one is named flaggy mcflag face?

4

Since Chief Seattle kept slaves and committed genocide against the Chimacum tribe, having led the massacre and extermination of the them in 1847 on the Kitsap Peninsula, I don't think we should have him on the flag. In fact, we should rename the city.

For the flag, I vote a pair of shit-stained hobos pants be hung above City Hall.

5

Oh, let's see how many of these managed to follow the five basic principles of flag design ...

Keep it simple. The flag should be so simple that a child can draw it from memory.
Use meaningful symbolism. The flag’s images, colors or patterns should relate to what it symbolizes.
Use two or three basic colors. Limit the number of colors on the flag to three that contrast well and come from the standard color set.
No lettering or seals. Never use writing of any kind or an organization’s seals.
Be distinctive or be related. Avoid duplicating other flags, but use similarities to show connections.

AN ESPECIALLY GREAT JOB PEOPLE WHO PUT A SEAL ON THE FLAG WHEN ONE OF THE MAIN COMPLAINTS WAS THAT WE SHOULDN'T HAVE A SEAL ON THE FLAG. A+++++++

@4:

Let me guess - you have a pair you'd like to donate, yes? Or are those the ones you keep in your "special drawer" for easy access when the urge to engage in a little coprophilia becomes just too much to resist?

7

My two runners up were 4 and 8. The orca face is funny and adorable; I'm not even that into orcas. I went for 8 because I'm a minimalist and also think we should maintain Chief Sealth as part of the city's iconography.

8

"also think we should maintain Chief Sealth as part of the city's iconography"

Slave owner and genocidal murderer, but ok. Can we get Columbus Day back then?

9

It should be the middle of the political compass with "nothing too extreme, please" in Latin.

10

Props to the guy who made the BHam flag, but I don't think the salmon tracks well. It looks like red and the coloring just doesn't fit the city's vibe. Besides, the use of a precious gem leans into the stereotype of Seattle being the land of the super rich.

11

These are all terrible.

Do it again, but this time disqualify anyone who works in web/app design.

12

I contributed a design. It wasn't great, but it was better than a lot of these which are mostly way too busy.

13

A lot of these seem to be more about Washington State than Seattle-specific (Hello? Tahoma isn't in Seattle. It's closer to...wait for it...oh, i forget, but it sounds similar).

14

Btw, the State of Washington’s flag is worse! Can’t we get a citizen initiative to fix these?

15

10 is cool, but I think the facets should be omitted from the emerald to simplify the design.

16

@14, as someone who used to see all of the states' and territories' flags together on a regular basis, at least Washington's isn't a state seal on a navy blue background. OK, it's on a green background, but it does stand out.

My favorite state flags (in no particular order): Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Tennessee. I suppose you could throw in Wyoming and California because I like the wildlife themes (bison and bear, respectively) too. Maryland's is cool, but a little busy.

The Canadian provincial flags are much better on average, although the Ontario, Manitoba and Alberta flags are boring, as are the Yukon and NWT territorial flags. BC's and New Brunswick's are probably my favourites.

17

Forgot to explain my vote here. I like 8. The design is simple. The profile of Chief Sealth appropriate. It's instantly recognizable and easy to relate to the history (and name) of the city.

Not a huge fan of the turquoise (I'm generally in favor of sticking with traditional heraldic colors and metals), but you can't have everything.

18

ORCA

19

I forget, are we choosing a flag for the new sports team or the next fan-con to come to Seattle?

Oh, for the City? Cities need flags? Wait, are we ACTUALLY spending time and emotional investment on this?

FFS.

I should have submitted one with a bunch of knock-off logos at the top and a trash heap at the bottom. It would be a terrible choice which is exactly what we deserve for even giving this the time of day.

20

14,

The state flag resembles a President’s Day Sale banner at a used car lot.

21

they all look like a 5th grade art project

22

These are terrible.

23

The last one is something I’d expect to see in an anime. It doesn’t look like a flag for a real city. It’s for a fictional city in a child’s cartoon.

Which could be why it’s the most popular as of this morning. Seattle often feels like an anime series.

25

What @24 said.

@8 that's true of pretty much all First Nation tribes, actually. And most of America for most of our history.

26

1 is tough to beat on all the 'good flag design' metrics.

28

The last one is neither emerald green nor emerald cut. Rebels, all of us!

It's also amazing how many people think that Mount Rainier is in Seattle.

29

The emerald one looks like a turtle. TURTLE POWER! (I'm not in Seattle, so I have no dog in this fight.)

30

9 reminds me of the Welcome to Nightvale logo.

31

3 looks like a sinking ship. So not the optics you're looking for.

32

8 looks like a bank logo.

33

And if we're trying to emphasize the "Emerald City" thing, why didn't anybody send in an entry featuring Dorothy, Toto, Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the lion?

34

Hey everyone, Chet here. Really glad you like my flag. I know this thing isn't over yet, but I'm working on some ideas to get this Orca face into your hands should it swim to victory. Have a look and let me know anything in particular you'd like this face to dwell upon. Thanks.

35

Wait. #10 is winning?! It breaks 3 of the 5 rules. And more importantly, the white border of the emerald makes it look offset because half of it is on a white background. And part of its symbolism is broken: why is a white stripe symbolic for Rainier? Rainier is not a stripe, and it's not in the east near Lake Washington. Also, the 7 hills thing does encourage a revolt from Magnolia or West Seattle - trying to decide whether that's in the plus column or the minus column.

36

The original flag is a great design, it just needs the center elements simplified or removed altogether.
