Trudeau loses the popular vote? So I'm assuming the Democrats in the US will claim he's illegitimate now? I mean the left prides itself on it's consistency.

Re: Canuckistani elections

THANK THE FSM!!! It’s an early Xmas miracle. If a Liberal/NDP coalition is gonna last more than a hawt five minutes, here’s hoping that Jagmeet Singh can tame JTru’s worst impulses, especially wrt appeasing multinational defense and energy companies.

It’s totally disingenuous to say the Conservatives won the popular vote with 34.4%—that’s their ceiling. Canada has five major political parties, and 65.6% of the voters chose candidates more liberal/progressive than the Cons.

3

@1 Canadian doesn't have a 2-party duopoly, fuckwit. Pick up a book, a journal, something so that you don't sound like such an ass all the time.

4

@3 Canada

5

If we get to lynch Prezirapist AntiChrist after the House impeaches his fugly, moronic, racist ass, then line for that particicution will stretch clear to Nebraska.

6

I thought about dressing up as an economic recession this year.

7

The popular vote is meaningless. What matters is that the Liberals no longer have a majority. That should have been the blurb. Something like this: Trudeau and the Liberal party won the election but did not get a majority of seats. It is likely they will form a coalition government with the NDP.

By the way, if seats were allocated exactly as people voted, then it is likely the NDP, Greens and Liberals would form a coalition government, as a majority of people voted for one of those three parties.

9

We the people have the right to wear short sleeve attire. Guns are nothing but a phony clause.

10

@9: Please, we all have a constitutional right to bare arms.

11

It's also a mistake to assume that the brownface/blackface scandal didn't hurt Trudeau ("three times doing blackface be damned"). The Liberals likely would've won a majority without the scandal.

12

@1,

Failure to win 50%+ of the popular vote is pretty common there.

You should probably educate yourself more before you comment.

@ 11,

JTru’s decisions to approve two oil pipelines and a LNG plant are just inexplicable. None of the people that support the fossil fuels industries were going to vote Liberal anyway, and it drove environmental voters straight into the welcoming arms of the NDP and the Greens.

Why not invest those billions in green job retraining programs rather than repeatedly punching his own dick?

That and the blackface scandal sank his credibility with the voters the Libs truly needed to hang on. File this all under “When Smart People Do Incredibly Stupid Things.”

Republican functionaries have been calling the impeachment inquiry a "coup" for weeks - another word of extra-legal violence applied to a by-the-book operation. I guess they felt the need to turn up the rhetorical heat a notch.

You'll know their really scared when they start calling it the Holocaust.

18

@1 it's mostly an optical illusion. There were three provinces where the CPC and their Russian bot nets got 65-68% of the vote: Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba, but the CPC vote dropped everywhere else, because Real Canadians know the Climate Crisis is now and they hates the pipelines, yes, they does, my precious.

On the plus side the Green Party actually went up in vote totals, and increased 300% in size and is 2/3 women now. The Liberal/NDP coalition means Climate Change is Now and the only jobs the three whiner provinces (that accepted foreign US donations and campaign staff illegally) will get will be building Renewables.

By employing the term lynching, President Trump is obviously attempting to characterize the impeachment proceedings as extra-legal and irrational.
Wrong on both counts. The House has been very deliberate and methodical in documenting the various illegal acts committed by Trump which should result in his impeachment.
It would be irrational to allow his wrong-doing to go unpunished.

His attempts to use foreign military aid, appropriated by the Congress, to further his own personal political aims is a terrible crime that deserves the sternest sanctions possible.
American foreign policy simply cannot be corrupted like that, there has to be a reckoning.

@17
“The American people are watching, and they will not forget. You may have the votes, you may have the muscle, but you do not have the legitimacy of a national consensus or of a constitutional imperative. This partisan coup d’état will go down in infamy in the history of this Nation.”
-Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York

“Mr. Speaker, it is a coup d’etat when you impeach a President for allegations that even if true the overwhelming majority of constitutional scholars say are not impeachable offenses. It is a coup d’etat when most of the prosecutors who testified in front of the committee said no prosecutor would seek an indictment because no jury would convict on the evidence we have. And it is a coup d’etat when you seek to upset an election, to overturn an election without a broad consensus of the necessity for doing so against the majority of the American people. That describes a coup d’etat, Mr. Speaker...”
-Rep. Jerrold Nadler of New York

“Mr. Speaker, how must our American soldiers feel to have their Commander in Chief under attack while they are engaged in battle? They have the right to feel betrayed and undermined. Today we are here in the people’s House debating the partisan impeachment of the President of the United States of America while the Commander in Chief is managing a crisis and asking world leaders for support. This is indeed a Republican coup d’etat...”
-Rep. Maxine Waters of California

“We are confronted with an overzealous and non-independent counsel report combined with a totally politicized process in the committee with party line votes onv nearly every issue. And so, I want to remind my colleagues that I am witnessing the most tragic event of my career in the Congress, in effect a Republican coup d’etat, in process...”
-(Retired) Rep. John Conyers of Michigan

“Yes, the President made a grievous personal error, to the detriment of his family. But no, it is not an offense against the State or our Constitution. We are now on the threshold of overturning the people’s choice for President through a perversion of the Independent Counsel law, a runaway partisan investigation of the most intimate, private activity...”
-Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.)

“Make no mistake about it, this is a constitutional amendment that we are debating, not an impeachment resolution. The Republicans are crossing out the impeachment standard of high crimes and misdemeanors, and they are inserting the words "any crime or misdemeanor." We are permitting a constitutional coup d’etat which will haunt this body forever. A constitutional clause intended to apply to a Benedict Arnold selling out his country will now be expanded to cover every personal transgression. Every future President, Democrat or Republican, will be subject to harassment by his political enemies, who can credibly threaten impeachment for the slightest misconduct...”
-Rep. Ed Markey (D-Mass.)

“Unfortunately, there is a determined minority in America and in this Chamber who never accepted the legitimacy of this President. To them this episode is mere pretext to accomplish what they could not during two separate elections. The majority is not here today to give the President his fair day in court. They are here to oust him...And make no mistake, my colleagues, not all coups are accompanied by the sound of marching boots and rolling tanks. Some, like today, are wrapped in a constitutional veneer, softened by pious assertions of solemn obligation and duty. But the result is the same, defiance of the public will and rejection of the regular political process.”
-Rep. Nita Lowey of New York

“Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong opposition to these articles of impeachment. We are perhaps at one of the lowest points in American politics. We are in the midst of a parliamentary coup. The party in the majority want to remove an elected president...”
-(Retired) Rep. Albert Wynn of Maryland

“No one, anywhere in the world today, can explain why a Congress would impeach the most popular elected President in the world at a time when that President is engaged in a conflict in Iraq. What you see here today is not a demonstration of democracy; it is a demonstration of a partisan political coups.”
-(Retired) Rep. Sam Farr of California

“Let me tell you what the real crime and high misdemeanor is, my fellow Americans. In 1994, the leaders announced their Contract on America. And today is the final agenda of that contract. They began their contract by attempting to cut school lunch, Head Start, food stamps, health care and Medicare for the elderly. These are the crimes that should be punished. This is a modern day coup d’etat, Mr. Speaker. It is the final piece of their contract...”
-(Retired) Rep. Corinne Brown of Florida

“Mr. Speaker, I rise in strong opposition to impeachment. I rise in strong opposition to this attempt at a bloodless coup d'etat, this attempt to overturn two national elections. The American people are ahead of the politicians; they are certainly ahead of the majority party. They want censure. Why are we not given the opportunity to vote up or down for censure on the House floor?”
-Rep. Eliot Engel of New York

“It should be clear to anyone who has paid attention that the right wing has not gotten over the fact that the President has been elected and re-elected. And so here we are today in the middle of a right wing coup. It does not matter what they tell you here this weekend, the fact is that the majority party is trying to undo the last two elections.”
-Rep. Jose Serrano of New York

@26 - You should include a link, its only ethical. The flacks who put that stuff together for you to cut-n-paste have families to feed.

https://www.cnsnews.com/news/article/susan-jones/trump-calls-it-coup-1998-dems-supporting-bill-clinton-agreed-impeachment

28

p.s. great comment thread there - "Clinton was a criminal - a wake of corpses behind him..." lol.

He even rags on Clinton for the sexual assaults. haha.

29

I too can copy and paste irrelevant fallacious Tu quoque bullshit about an impeachment with much lower stakes. I mean. The question begging.

So you’re either saying Clinton’s impeachment was unjust? Or that because we didn’t properly impeach Clinton we should get a THIS one right?

See that’s the problem with arguing from Tu quoque. “Hypocrisy” implies that you think there is something to be hypocritical about.

And nobody in 1994 was arguing that impeachment itself was wrong just that there was no clear offense other than the ‘ol trap of perjury before congress. Which ironically Bill Barr was the one who set that shit up. Only to now hypocritically conclude a sitting (read: Republican) President can’t be indicted FOR ANYTHING. there’s your hypocrisy.

Anyway. If THAT was impeachable then then it sure as fuck is now and Trump or his proxies have perjured themselves over and over, which is why some have already gone to jail or been fired.

Also in this case our federal election laws are clear. Our emoluments clause is clear. And violating those laws has been impeachable since the founding.

So. What was your dumb point? I already forgot it.

@27
I did not use any original content. Only direct quotes that are available from other sources.
@28
But... Since you bring it up, it's kind of hard NOT to consider the many, many women who say Bubba of sexualy assaulted them when you assess Presidency. Most importantly, we must always remember: "Every survivor of sexual assault deserves to be heard, believed, and supported." -Hillary Rodham Clinton

31

@29
No comment here by me on the proprietary of Trump's Impeachment. Impeachment is a political action and political actions are not proper or improper, they are simply expedient. My comment was to the pearl clutching triggered by the reference to a "coup d’état" and nothing more.

32

Okay, all you UW lfie sciences people - raise you hand if you think The Blob is just slime mold.

You guys still bringing up the Clintons? Really? You_Gotta_Be_Kidding_Me...

@10: Including 3-year-olds? You must be a real cut-up on open-mic night, sugarlips. I'll bet your Alec Baldwin impersonation leaves 'em rolling in the aisles.

@25 kallipugos: For the WIN! Can I buy you a beer?

Raise your hand if you thoroughly read @26's Great American Novel.
.............hey--listen--------crickets!

@33: That's all the MAGA idiot squad has left. "Oh, look---HILLARY!!"

35

@5 Original Andrew: Nebraska? You're being too kind, Andrew. My guess is that the eager line for the Fake Prezi-nazi lynching will stretch twice around the globe, and three times on Sunday while Vladimir Putin and Kim Jung-un laugh their asses off.

36

@34: It's a pun in @10 auntie. Note the second to the last word in the sentence. Puns are just for fun!

37

@33&@34

Oh... She’ll try to get into it. Will probably succeed. Impeachments are messy things that create chaos. Chaos is an opportunity. Biden slipping, no plausible moderate in place to replace him, and the progressives hi-jacking the party. What on earth would stop her from reaching for the brass ring again? I mean, it’s certainly not coincidental she’s on a book tour... Nothing is coincidental with them.

But I’ll put it to you again: Why wouldn’t she?

38

@31 "political actions are not proper or improper, they are simply expedient."

Right, you are an opportunistic asshole who'll do/say anything for win, like Trump as he keeps demonstrating daily

39

@38
And you are a triggered snowflake that believes feeling and thinking are the same thing.

40

@39 it's not about feelings you twerp, it's about understanding that process is very important because behaving like a fascist doesn't further democracy, for example (I..e the means determine the end)

41

@40
Eh. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. The ends must justify the means.
