sunking, "jabu-jabu" (self-released)

This city needs more groups like sunking, who flit among genres such as hip-hop, jazz, and shoegaze rock while messing with the DNAs of each style they address. Led by drummer Rob "Bobbygrooves" Granfelt and keyboardist/guitarist Antoine "Sous Chef" Martel, sunking dropped a 23-track self-titled album earlier this year that recalls the mercurial rhythmic sorcery of Prefuse 73 and Flying Lotus and the melodic delicacy and atmospheric mysteriousness of Air and the Heliocentrics. Masters of the sonic tease, sunking have made the longest cut here 2 minutes, 37 seconds.

Speaking of teases, "jabu-jabu" is a mere 1:57, but it delivers a lot of dazzlement for your dollar. Granfelt's supremely dank, head-nodding beats and Camilo Estrada's inquisitively funky bass line contrast with Martel's spectral keyboard wonderment and the alluring wisps of alto and tenor saxophone by High Pulp's Andrew Morrill and the Fade Quintet's Alex Dugdale. I could use at least 10 minutes of this sort of ultra-cool intrigue. To quote Can, "I want more and more and more and more..." Check it out after the jump.

sunking perform Sunday, October 27, at Timbre Room with Nathan Womack, Kassa Overall, and Scott Keva James, as part of the Earshot Jazz Festival.
