Yeah, frontline responders (firefighters) have no idea what they are talking about. If only they would listen to the bloggers and twitters, firefighters would better understand real public safety.
The navigation team is worthless. Tearing down peopleās encampments and throwing away peopleās personal belongings are police state actions.
The mayor orders these sweeps which are a violation of basic human rights. A crime against humanity. People have had enough. The mayor should be swept from office. Housing First program now.
The employees of the city departments that have to deal with the homeless encampments (Fire, Police, SPU, S-DOT) are tired of the status quo. They're the ones who have to wade into these areas to try to sort out whatever drama is going on, or clean up the area after the residents vacate.
Unions are the agents for these employees, hence they are active. It's really not that complicated of a concept.
āAs Daniel Malone, the executive director of the Downtown Emergency Service Center, told The Stranger: "The shelters are full. Even if everyone in an encampment were to become interested in going into shelter, the vast majority would have no shelter to go to."ā
Have we any source or statistics for that completely self-serving statement, which is coming from a prime consumer of Seattle taxpayer funds? Heās in direct competition with our Fire Department for public money, and he knows it. They are implicitly calling him out for whatever part he played in the catastrophic failure of our previous policy on homelessness, and heās butt-covering like any other frightened bureaucrat.
āIt's really not that complicated of a concept.ā
It is for writers here at The Stranger, who by now keenly resent actual union workers constantly lining up to oppose their āprogressiveā candidates.
Most their endorsements make sense, considering how awful the opponents of those they endorsed would be on matters of public safety. But Juarez for D5? I'm baffled by that. Juarez has been AWOL in her district when it comes to crime and homeless camps.
And by the way, can we start setting up some these FEMA tents that other cities have been trying so we can finally kick the vagrants out of our parks and get them sheltered?
@6: Setting up encampments in public or private areas without authorization is not a basic human right. Hence the state is doing the peoples' will, not the police's will.
Hardly a police state when our cops are told to disregard misdemeanors by the mayor's office.
Every time a drug-addled dirtbag falls over and skins his/her knees, the SFD/SFPD are the ones who get to come save the dirtbag from him/herself. Imagine going to work every day knowing you're going to have to get up close and personal with bodily fluids of the very worst dregs of society. The mental health burden on our public safety employees is horrific. Those guys (a general non-specific label) deserve every dime they are paid. FOR PUBLIC SAFETY.
6, please come to third and james and spend a few days on the sidewalk with the dirtbags and see how bleeding your heart is. We're talking the most repulsive element of society that has no self-respect or respect for anyone else. They could be nuked out of existence and no one would care. Except maybe you and your ilk. Boo hoo.
Another curmudgeon dear, why do you blame the firefighters for that situation? It takes two parties to enter into a union contract: The union and the management. The City of Seattle labors under the quaint notion that City Employees represent a voting block, and it's not true. I don't know the percentage of employees who actually live in the city, but I have a feeling that it's not many.
In previous years the city played hardball with the union - see the City Light IBEW strikes of the 70's - but they won't do it anymore. There have even been times when unions have agreed in negotiations to enact cost-cutting measures that the city labor relations board has nixed.
Greed has/is causing homelessness. I live in this city and people need safe places to stay, The housing is too expensive.
Try living without a kitchen, bathroom and place to sleep. Its common knowledge that this city is a play ground for the rich. People are dying on the street that is hardly a choice.
9 If there is decent options for the unsheltered the navigation team wouldnāt have to deal with it now but there is little or none and they are not offering anything. There is no place to go. Simply criminalizing people isnāt working and criminalizing people for poverty is simply wrong.
14 I have been to fourth and James and you are talking about severely disabled and disturbed people that have medical issues both mental and physical.
What the fuck is wrong with you man? Do you need a reality check?
Another example of "Good People" insisting that the government do "something" without getting specific about the "something" or the "funding".

They're SPOG's beard.
@2 On the flipside, there's tremendous competition for these desirable, high-paying jobs.
Think of them as top-tier internet software programmers, except actually doing something worthwhile for humantiiy.

I am sure there are firefighters that are not in agreement with the fire chief and his elite top brass.
@5 You've got it backassward. Many wanting few jobs never led to higher paycheck unless there is rampant corruption.

12 Yes but shelter is a basic human right and the decent shelters are not here.

14 I meant third and James but fourth and James is ok too.
