"[...] I will say that as a lead author on the forthcoming Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Changeā€™s (IPCC) Sixth Assessment report of the global climate due out next year, I can assure you that the planetary situation is extremely dire.

[..]

We have already squandered over a decade debating climate policy in Australia. All the while, the clear reality of a rapidly destabilising planet accelerates all around us.

There genuinely is no more time to waste. We must act as though our home is on fire ā€“ because it is."

Ricky Gervais will win the Golden Globes by offending the woke, intersectional Taliban. Somewhere I know he has a good Caitlyn Jenner/Greta Thunberg joke.

Today.

Over two hundred Repub,I can lawmakers signed a petition to urge the SCOTUS to ā€˜reconsiderā€™ Roe v Wade, including Washington stateā€™s delegation- Cathy McMorris Rogers and Jaime Herrera Butler. Leaving aside the fact that only serial killers use all three of their names, Iā€™d like to point out that at least one Democrat has joined them- Congressman Dan Lipinski of Illinois.

The central flaw in the ā€œVote Blue no matter whoā€ argument is illustrated by Lipinski and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Both men are lifelong members of the Democratic Party. Both want to end a womanā€™s rights choose, and to strip LGBT people of all the rights we have won in the past two decades. If you hold to the line of voting Blue no matter who, that would mean voting for Lipinski and Manchin, too.

5

Wandering Stars dear, I think that you are missing the point.

ā€œVote Blue, no matter whoā€ applies, here on Planet Earth, to the 2020 presidential election. For any other position you are welcome to vote Green, or Vegetarian, or Freedom Socialist, or whatever the newest pin on your backpack urges you to.

6

Amazing. Tucker Carlson was not gracious to the Trump administration tonight, blasting the neocons around the president big time.

7

@4, @5 - you are missing the other big issue with electing Dems no matter what. The party in the majority picks leadership. Think how different the world would be if we had 4 more Dems in the Senate, meaning that Mitch McTurtleface would not be the majority leader. A certain orangutan would not be able to accomplish jack shit.

I would argue that would far outweigh having a couple of Dems who disagreed with the party on abortion. So, no, please don't cast a protect vote if it means that a Republican may get or keep a seat.

What the fuck is this "preventing a war" because "he had big plans" nonsense that no one has seemed to call out? Was Soleimani some sort of superhero movie villain with a unique power that now defeated means that now the "plans" are off? "Yep we got that one guy, now whatever complicated quasi-terrorist operation we weren't going to be able to prevent any other way can't happen." Such bullshit. Of course they can still do whatever it was they were (allegedly) going to do, and now Iran has a built in justification.

And if it wasn't actually a specific impending event, but rather general intelligence that something was coming down the pipe, or, worse, that we didn't like Soleimani's policy positions and history and wanted to scrub his voice from Iran's halls of power? That's a huge mistake. State assassination is an absolutely awful look, worse in many ways than going to war. It takes an entire set of rules for conduct and throws them out the fucking window. Now for the rest of the Trump administration and probably beyond, basically any state with the balls to take the blow back can do basically whatever they want. I'm not saying that that's not how is actually is, but rather that the veneer that we as the most powerful player have some set of standards for our state actions overseas is crucially important to maintaining some semblance order in the world. Now we've unmasked that it's actually just pirates all the way down holding up the world. Way smarter to do it like Russia, where everyone know they did it but they have plausible deniability and stick to that story.

Most likely the Saudis wanted to hack a chunk out of the regional hegemony competitor and Trump said yes my King I'll get right on that, I'm here to serve! And for that now we as Americans are less safe all over the world, when the retaliation comes we'll go even harder at Iran. Then maybe Trump gets his wartime president fear-bump just in time for the election, stays for another 4 to 12 years.

So I guess we call it a Win (Saudis) maybe Win (Trump) Lose (people of the world, including Trump's squad of core dipshits).

9

If we're taking bets on what, if actual, this coming attack was going to be, I've got my nickel down on Saudi oil fields. Because Trump doesn't give a cold fuck about the American people. Mo' war for oil!

10

Knives Out was so much better than Once Upon a Time...

11

dvs99 dear, I always vote Democrat because Republicans are horrible people.

12

@7 and @11
Yes! Thank you Mrs. Vel-DuRay!

13

@11: Democrats are horrible people too.

14

"Experts believe Iran may begin 'a digital campaign of
cyberattacks and disinformation' against the U.S. in retaliation."

Speaking of Horrible people, and not sure about
the cyberattacks, but fucking FOX's got Iran's
Disinformation Campaign down:
"If it ain't Disinformation, it Cain't be FOX!" ā„¢

And, it isn't just Iran who's gonna be Pissed --
there's a Lot more Middle Easterners who're
gonna want (at least) a little Retribution, too.

trumpfy's (eventually) gonna hafta bomb all of 'em, apparently.
thnx, Republicans:

WHY are you always on the Wrong side of History?

15

Trivia: Chase had not yet been born when the Stranger used to do Live Slog during awards shows.

16

@14: I actually watch FNC, you don't. They are not all singing the same tune anymore.

See @6. Also, see Geraldo Rivera's take:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDJFK1UdZb0

17

@10 I loved Knives Out. I wouldn't be mad if they won any of their categories.
@15 I did some of those Live Slogs during awards shows, Stinky! I've been here longer than you think. But, for the record, I was born in 2012.

18

@6: Here's Tucker from last night:

@16 -- Repubs can Evolve?!
Who Knew?

Pretty fawking Remarkable -- it took them Three L O N G Fucking Years of Ineptitude, small and Big Lies, total Mismanagement, Obstructions of Justice and Congress, High Crimes, Misdemeanors and General Malfeasances, way to numerous to list.

They've (suddenly!) discovered the Joy of Ethics?
Excellent!
So, they're on board for Conviction in the Senate?

Nice try, Rainy:
But FOX's STILL in (nearly-dead)
Rupert 'Uncle Snoopy's' Deathgrip.

20

Hold on a sec here, Chase --
you're EIGHT (years old?)?

Well played! Bonus:
trumpfy's gonna have a
Hellova time drafting your young ass.

However -- play your cards right, and you could
be The Stranger's Youngest ever War Correspondent.

21

@17: Cool. And Dan will be right there to guide you though puberty.

23

@22: Sure, what would you like? A Black Russian?

24

@7 &@11 Catalina Vel-DuRay and @14, @19 & @20 kristofarian Tied for the WIN! And thank you both for beating me to it.

25

@17: Chase, do you mean 2002?

26

@25
I'm pretty sure that was a joke.
(They say the kids love the jokes)
If he was born in 2002 he would only be 18 years old (at most) and he is a college graduate.

27

Australia, so sad:

@27 -- from your link: "This - RIGHT HERE --
is the dystopian future we see in the movies.
It's here.

An ecological catastrophe caused by climate change, all because the people in power would rather support fossil fuels and big business than take action to save us from total ruin."

As the Constitution's 'just a piece
of paper!' --gee dubya bush, so's
Earth just another (dying) Planet.
--the kochs, Addledsons, FOX,
various (Profits Firsters/Planet
Earth Lasters) sycophants.

Et tu?

fyi, the comments option in Nathalie's slog AM thread is a 404 error message. Someone may want to notify someone. Is it tips@thestranger.com I think?

I would argue that it's time to stop lumping together in one category movies that are released only in theaters and those that are released only via streaming or premium cable networks.

They are not the same species. The direction, acting, cinematography, art direction, sound, and even the editing must be tailored to the different media.

How a movie is received by its audience when seen on a 70-ft screen with state-of-the art surround sound is a different experience from watching it on an 70-inch home screen or, God forbid, a phone or tablet screen.

It's time to split out streaming only films from those made for theaters. I see them as entirely different art forms that suffer when not seen in the medium for which they were created..

Neither the film industry, producers, nor the award presenting bodies have yet to grasp the subtle differences of the media. One form is not more valid than the other. Both have their places. Rather pitting them against each other in a single category is like (forgive the overused analogy) pitting apples agsinst oranges.

31

The Globes are over. Having watched them, mostly because I was too lazy to change the channel after the Seahawks' game, they were pretty lame. Gervais was pretty lame. His "jokes", while predictably offensive to his audience, sadly weren't funny to most of us at home.

The presenters and winners were pretty lame. I haven't seen almost all the nominees and winners, and very likely never will. Even the fashion, which is often the only high point of these awards shows. was a disaster, except for Billy Porter who continues to push the envelope, God bless him.

32

Jojo Rabbit was robbed.

The best part was Mr. Gervais

33

@26 Adam Kadmon: That's what I thought--a joke, or one helluva typo.
@20 kristofarian: I second it--Good one, Chase! You'll avoid the draft into Trumpty Dumpty's doomed Army. Well played, indeed. Don't forget to submit your 3rd grade school photo.
