What about a Sanders/Buttigieg ticket to unify the Dems? It could counter the age claim about Sanders, what with this moderate, golden boy, gay JFK waiting in the wings.

I’m honestly starting to think that Warren may be far more effective in changing the balance of power in this country by becoming the next secretary of the treasury. Wow, I mean she could really upend the status quo of corporate oligarch corruption, possibly far more meaningfully than as a President trying to negotiate policy with Congress.

P.S. We also need Kamala Harris as the next AG to send all those Tr666pfuckers to jail.

2

I suppose it's plausible, but I find it a stretch that MAGA folk are meandering through Sanders rallies throwing bottle caps at Bernie bros.

3

Oh, and Rich - a well written piece that captured the experience and gave us the needed takeaways.

5

"China abandoned it for a "free market approach"..."

But kept the totalitarian Communist Party. (And socialized medicine, as did Russia).

So it's not totalitarianism and dictatorship you hate. It's paying to help treat children with cancer.

6

We hate socialism so much in this country we only let the 1% and multibillion dollar corporations use it. So there.

7

By gawd, Tservo, thank you Muchly for Saying it:

"We hate socialism so much in this country we only let the 1% and multibillion dollar corporations use it. So there."

Why poor folk hate Socialism for the Poor
is a neat Trick Republicans like to play on them;
but do Not tell them -- it'll just make 'em do it, worse....

"... despite what some union bosses say, union members support Medicare For All because they don’t want to spend their whole life bargaining for health care at the negotiating table." --Rich Smith

Well.
DUH.

8

@5 How’s that socialized healthcare working out in China these days?

Btw Chinese with a little bit of money go straight to private hospitals.

9

"So it's not totalitarianism and dictatorship you [mistrial] hate.
It's paying to help treat children with cancer."

Bingo, Perfessor.
Thank you.

(All?) Repubs believe that if cancer-ridden Children
Deserved it, well, then, they could Afford it.

That's some real Shit Hole Country 'thinking' right there...

12

@10 -- Yeah, and thanks for that Mistrial.

Why we, thee Richest Country in the History of Countries should wanna catch up with THE REST OF THE INDUSTRIALIZED (read: Civilized) WORLD, and treat Healthcare as Human fucking Right, why, that's just Stupidity.

Oh, and Hate also.

Did I get that right?

You're a (closeted) Billionaire
ain'tchya?

13

@ 10,

Our dysfunctional mess already costs multiple times what countries like Canada pay for single payer that covers everyone. That’s what gives them pricing power and negotiation leverage. So you’re saying that we should continue to pay for the privilege of being ripped off by the private insurance industry.

14

As someone on Medicare and Social Security, I was interested in the cuts in the new budget. The cuts aren't for benefits, but for costs. The budget plans on paying less for the cost of things like prescription drugs. The benefits will not be cut.

@ Shorline Dave

Must be a HELLOVA SCANDAL, eh?

Here's the first comment on:

"Jane Sanders and the Messy Demise of a Vermont College"

"Why is this article even being published?

If there was ever a Justice Department in the history of this country that would have tried and convicted Mrs. Sanders for her alleged wrongdoing, surely it would be this administration's corrupt, right wing Justice Department [featuring trump personal attorney, usag Bill Barr!], who we know has no qualms about using the facade of the law to advance Mr. Trump's political standing.

The fact that even Trump's lackeys couldn't build a case against Mr. Sanders' wife, which would have been a political boon for Republicans in 2020, speaks volumes more than this New York Times hit piece ever will.

[NYT,] Give the biased, negative Sanders coverage a rest!" --John Louis, Far Ranch, AL, June 22, 2019

Bernie Sanders / Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) -- the first Latina elected to Congress (from the fourth-largest city in the USA), she was also a House 'manager' in the Impeachment of the most corrupt pos ever to squat in the White House.

Whip-smart, a former Judge, articulate and fiery, with a metreoric rise thru Texas politics, and, 10 or 11 years younger than Bernie (no Spring Chicken, but nowhere near the Grave).

With Beto O'Rourke narrowly losing to Ted Cruz, in 2016, Texas is IN play. I think Garcia'd probably cinch the Hispanic vote.

18

@17-- Correction: Sylvia Garcia (D-TX) -- was the first Latina elected to Congress from the fourth-largest city, Houston, in the USA. There were other Latinas, berfore her, but none from Houston.

19

I didn't know his wife was his campaign manager. I had assumed it was a coincidence in their surnames. I picture her identical to Bernie, but with a bit more hair and those '60s-style librarian glasses.

20

@2,

That does seem odd. I'd first read it as a precautionary measure against jackasses potentially throwing unopened bottles of water, which could conceivably hurt someone if thrown reasonably hard. And given all of the assholishness that played out at those MAGA rallies, I'd think such simple measures may have even been warranted. Any childish idiot who was just looking to be annoying by throwing bottle caps at people could simply bring a couple pockets full of them.

21

"How’s that socialized healthcare working out in China these days?"

@8 You really are a totally fucking moron. You think private insurance would work with 3 billion of some of the world poorest people, you imbecile? How the fuck would that work?

You think private for profit health insurance would be able to contain COVID-19 in a nation of 3 billion?

You think private healthcare could construct 20 hospital in in thirty days?

Christ almighty do you even TRY to think for five seconds before you post?

23

@McBikey -- what 'unlimited power' are you talking about?

trump's now-non-existant Congressional oversight?

'Cause he's a Free Bird now.
Long as he thinks whatever he's doing is
in The Nation's/trump's "best interests."

24

@20 -- the scuffle occurred on the Dome floor, directly behind the non-video-media gated area. There were toddlers walking their parents around, just hanging out about fifty feet away, but they'd wandered over there a bit before, as well; when the scuffle broke out, some of the older toddlers, being random (apparently), decided to head that direction, which alarmed the parents into racing ahead of their kids, and then moving them well away. So, yeah, anything thrown with them toddling around could have easily led to a possibly-serious injury.

We need a New President.
Even a well road-tested one

Time to get the Ball rolling, America.
Let US end Corporate Rule.

A social Democracy is what we Chiefly need.

25

Hell yeah! Go Bernie!

26

OMG 17,000?!!?!? That means he will totally win the nomination and beat Trump! Or not.
You are all insane. You want a revolution when Bernie hasn't gotten more than 3 Socialist Democrats in all of Congress.
The Democratic Primary always elevates the liberal. The one who can't win. And last time Hillary lost because of YOU.
Don't make the same mistake again when Bernie blows it. Which is the only thing he is capable of considering I can't name 1 thing he has done in Congress or life since 1981 other than live in a mansion while crying about rich people.

28

"I can't name 1 thing he has done in Congress or life since 1981 other than live in a mansion while crying about rich people." About rich peeps, not paying Their Fair Share, you mean.

Are you kidding me, SirWalter? Why, Bernie'd toss down his windbreaker, so's you wouldn't haffta moistnen your soles, for you, if he could.

Getting back to reality:
"Sanders in 2013 proposed legislation to break up “too-big-to-fail” banks, which today have more assets and control more of the economy than before taxpayer bailed them out in 2008. Wall Street bankers have blocked the bill.

The bankers lost a battle in 2009, however, when Sanders in 2009 reached across the aisle to work with Senator Charles Grassley to amend (S.A. 306) a bill to prevent banks that took taxpayer bailouts from replacing laid-off U.S. workers with lower-paid foreign workers."

Okay, well, if you're no War Monger, there's Bernie also leading the Charge AGAINST the two CHENY/bush Wars -- as opposed to Biden, who championed them:

"Sanders helped rally a powerful coalition of seniors, women, veterans, labor unions and disabled Americans to stop a 2013 proposal to cut Social Security and disabled veterans’ benefits.

A year after broaching the idea of changing the way cost-of-living adjustments are made, the White House backed off the idea to cut benefits by revising how the consumer price index is calculated. Sanders has a plan to expand benefits provided by the retirement system, which has a $2.8 trillion surplus and has not contributed to the deficit."

"Sanders led the effort to protect the pensions of older workers. When the Bush administration proposed a rule allowing companies to cut the pensions of older workers by as much as 50 percent, the House passed an amendment to prevent this rule from being implemented.

Sanders also passed an amendment to prevent the Bush administration from working to overturn a federal district court ruling that IBM’s pension cuts violated age discrimination laws.

This amendment helped 130,000 IBM workers regain $320 million in pension benefits that had been taken away from them."

There's more, if you're in the least bit Interested:

https://www.sanders.senate.gov/legislative-landmarks

He's no McMitch KkKonnell, that's fer sure.
But, he won't be another trumpfian Nightmare, either.

30

Wow, Shoreline Dave, throwing shit back...
Not bad, for a Plumber.

31

@29 -- Because Bernie is not yet President.
Duh.

32

It's okay, you don't gotta get on the Bandwagon just yet.

In Canada, they put the guy who brought the Medicare for All on Statues.

trumpfy could still do that,
but I believe he's headed
for vastly different places.

33

@29: Because the Right has badly underfunded Medicare and Medicaid, in order to free up money for the pointless increases in the war budget we've had over and over for decades and in order to fund the pointless, senseless, unwinnable wars we're fighting against the Arab/Muslim world.

35

You are right. Typo. It should’ve been 1.3 billion.

But, dumbfuck, the point is the same. Once again you can’t refute my point.

You think private god damned insurance would work for 1.3 billion people. Most of which are infinitely poorer than Americans?

We already have almost 25-30 million uninsured people in the US. With a population around 300 million.

What would that number be in China if it was private healthcare? Hundreds of millions. Suddenly their healthcare goes from free to expensive like the US? Christ almighty.

And you think those hundreds of millions of uninsured people would go get care at a private hospital if they got the coronavirus?

Think. Think you stupid piles of dogshit.

36

I'm concerned that Bernie's so far to the left that he'll get very little accomplished. I plan to vote for whoever the dem nominee is because I want this Trump nightmare to end but if it's Bernie, I think it might be another Jimmy Carter presidency, one term and he's gone.

I'm hoping it'll be Biden or Bloomberg. They're both far from perfect candidates but both are also far better human beings than the incompetent, corrupt disaster currently ruining the White House.

38

Is that one of your famous 'facts'?

'Soothsayers, the whole damn lot of 'em.'

39

Been a while since I've seen straight up concern trolling ala 36.

40

AFAIK there's no contradiction between having a single payer system & individuals choosing to purchase additional private insurance. People do it in Europe too right? And reasons are obvious- someone wants extra care or faster or wants to go to places where they won't be surrounded by the poor. People like exclusion. Same reason you have VIP lounges and private prep schools etc. I fail to see how the existence of rich people who want extras is in any way an argument against M4A.

Aside from the obvious human rights benefits, I think the biggest impact of M4A would be separating health insurance from the job. If your health care is a part of your benefits package, you could end up seeing a pay increase. Small business owners could hire more people. And I know loads of people who would quit their current jobs and do something very different if not for the fact that they need the health care plans.

We have an incredibly stupid and cruel and expensive system and it's just mind blowing that so many Americans have to fight so hard to have something that every other developed country figured out decades ago.

41

Mind blowing to me is we have so many with crappy 'health' care, Defending the current system of Corporate Skim.

Thanks, as per usual, Emma Liz.

42

As a fellow Texan, what do you think of Congresswoman Garcia, Emma Liz? Think she'd make a good match with Sanders, were he to wrest The Nod away from the 'D'NC?

43

Sylvia Garcia? Didn't she just come in during the midterm? I grew up in her district though that was many moons ago and have not lived there since the mid 90s so I don't know too much about her. I guess it could be strategic since Texas is purple now and Texans do tend to vote for their own nationally. He does pretty well with the hispanic community already, but I think he could do better on highlighting immigration issues since I think the latino vote could make/break the election in 2020 if it's Bernie v Trump.

Honestly I'm going to be disappointed if Bernie does not pick someone from within the movement. Has she come out for him already? Worked with him on anything? He's said casually that he'd like to select a woman of color but I don't know if that's his first priority. My own preference would be someone like Ro Khanna or Pramila Jayapal or Carmen Yulin Cruz- they have a bit more experience and were left before 2016, came out in support for him early, very good on immigration, foreign policy & climate change which I think are the most important issues in the next few years, and - not to be morbid- Bernie is old and so his VP choice matters more than with others which is why I think it would be disappointing if he chooses just a regular liberal. But if he does step outside the movement for VP, then I'd say the obvious choice is Barbara Lee and she deserves it, has good instincts, would be a concession to liberals without a compromise to the left. I don't know if she wants the gig though. Of course I love Nina Turner too but I'd like to see her as press secretary, can you imagine? Who knows. There are loads of great talented people to choose. I hope he doesn't go with someone run of the mill. Is Sylvia good? What do you know about her?

Did you see he selected his campaign chairs for Texas? I thought he made some savvy choices. He's gone with Greg Casar, Jim Hightower, Lee Merritt & Farrukh Shamsi. Farrukh is the only one I don't know, but it looks like he's in health care? Anyway, between the other three, he covers a wide range of lefty movements in Texas- lots of connections there.
