Jasmyne, I saw the Jacob Lawrence exhibit last Saturday and I agree with your opinion. A few facts/misconceptions need to be addressed however. The captured Africans did not travel from Africa aboard the Amistad. The Amistad was a coastal schooner operating out of Cuba and not a slave ship. The Africans had been sold in Cuba to slave owners who were using the Amistad to transport them to their island plantations. The Africans were, essentially, considered cargo by the crew who were not "Spanish Slavers", just ordinary sailors.

Wow! I met Mr Lawrence and his wife once when I was working at the Henry. Incredibly gracious people
