Is it impenetrably dense? I happened upon a copy of Plato's Republic a couple years ago and thought it might be a fun read, as I've never delved too heavily into the philosophical classics and... Holy shit. The actual work was preceded by a lengthy introduction, which itself was preceded by a translator's introduction, which I never did manage to make it all of the way through. Kept it bedside and it certainly did serve as a remarkably useful cure for insomnia.
I remember David Schmaeder's short lived goofy-ass film discussions that he used to post here though, and they were always fun reads and so I'll give this a shot!
Great idea. Wonderful book. Uplifting even!
A great novel about a pandemic flu wiping out civilization is "Station Eleven" by Emily St. John Mandel (2014)
Sounds fun. My office happens to have a copy of the Gilbert translation on the shelf. I've never read it, but now is the time to remedy that.
Ha! I just recommended that book to a friend at work yesterday. I have read it and have a copy of it.
Brilliant!

Next up: De Rerum Natura, Book VI. Que disfruten
This is great! What about read Blindness by Saramago next?
"Pale Horse, Pale Rider" by Katherine A. Porter is my go-to novella for plague reading. Love story unfolds during Spanish Flu, 1917. Check it.
@10, @11 -- Thanks for those ideas! I'll add those to the list of potential next books in this club.
@2 agreed! This is one of my favorites and I always recommend it.
Fabulous.
The Stranger recommending The Plague is so meta.
Fab idea! Started reading--I read La Peste in French for a literature class. The English translation captures the mood well!
Super into this. My copy's sitting in storage in Seattle while I'm in plague exile in Oaxaca, so I just downloaded the Kindle version.
Started reading it three weeks. Every one dies, starting with the rats. Think the first one was named "The Donald".
Also there's a free pdf version online.
I'd not heard of this author. I see he also wrote a book called "The Stranger". I doubt this is a coincidence ... what's the link?
The link is not working.....have picture, need email......
