Pretty sure that's more than three school districts.

2

It's many many school districts.

It's three counties.

Half the state's population.

Pro tip: take the kids on a statewide tour of parks, ski resorts, beaches, and teach them some life skills that don't require person-to-person contact.

Like him or not, agree with him or not, at least Inslee is showing leadership and taking his cues from the scientists and doctors.

Can you imagine what a Governor Craswell, Rossi, or Eyeman would have done?

4

@3: No, but maybe a Governor McKenna.

5

@3 You're reading my mind!!! LOL

I was just thinking: can you imagine trying to navigate this epidemic under grifting chair-thief Tim Eyeman as governor? Holy shitballs, that would be crazy.

This is going to get really challenging in the next month or two, but at least Inslee seems to be taking advice from scientists and medical advisers who know what the hell they're doing. He seems actively engaged in trying to manage a serious problem and trying to do everything to keep it from snowballing out of control. Initiative pimp Eyeman would just be shitting the bed and making everything worse.

6

@2: not a great plan. The purpose of this is keeping people away from each other, so going out is counterproductive.

Chairman Timmy'd be Cutting taxes

@8 As someone who lives 3 blocks from the beach here in Oregon (northern coast) where right now there is no known case of COVID-19, I am not looking forward to tomorrow's influx of spring breakers. Everyone is stoked for the clean air, meanwhile by the time they leave we will undoubtedly have been exposed to COVID-19 (though we may have already, given the no tests available so who knows? problem).

The City Council seems so excited there has been no cancellations at local hotels, etc. with absolutely no indication they care about the people who live here or the people coming here, when the one hospital here is licensed for 56 beds, but operates only 25 as of 2015. Meanwhile 6,700 people live here and 40,000 live in the county (and there is only one other hospital in the county has 25 beds as well). All cases of COVID-19 in Oregon have been community spread (is that the term - not related to travel is what I mean) in numerous counties all over the state. We may be lucky now compared to WA and CA, but luck is not going to get us very far given how things are playing out (especially with no testing).

@9 Which of the Fratellis are you?

'Spose your Chamber of Dollars'd welcome No Pandemic Please-type signs in your little resort-by-the-sea, xina? Might they understand that Overwhelming the Services (perhaps not quickly, perhaps not there, but inevitably) is extemely short-term thinking?

The whole idea is to slow the thing down.

All those dollar-bearing touristas, possibly packing pandemic (like you say, whotf knows?), is the CC's 'vision' really that short-sighted?

Too many peeps in too small a place; that can't be Good. I'm guessing Seattle Will's not looking for that type of adventure -- perhaps more of a Swiss Family Robinsonish excursion...

Pretty easy to find semi-Seclusion here in the wild wild West. I think it's an outstanding idea. Stop at grocery stores, cook your own. You can eat pretty Well if cook it yourself.

Or get it To Go.

Seize the Day. Whytf not?

@11 I get your point - go out into Olympic National Park and get away from civilization.

It's not like that here. We're talking an extremely dense area. The population density is 1,671 per sq mi which is 3614% higher than the Oregon average and 1745% higher than the national average. The tourists come and stay within a few block radius, cover the beach with trash, eat at every terrible tourist trap restaurant (one thing that the people who live here don't do), and leave, leaving the city significantly filthier than when they arrived. It's that way from spring break until school starts in September.

Take for example, in contrast, Astoria, which is being monitored by the Coast Guard who is telling cruise ships they can't dock in Astoria. They are doing so knowing full well if there were an outbreak of COVID-19 it would bring the county to its knees. The city of Astoria is 100% on board with doing what they can to keep the virus away. (Has Seattle stopped allowing Cruise ships to dock)?

Due to my being in the high risk category, I'm staying in my home until May, but my mother (my primary caregiver, who is also soon to be 71) has to go out into the world b/c I cannot (even if I were able to do so and wanted to do so). People her age are at significantly higher risk of dying if they contract COVID-19 (that's why so many people have died in Italy). That being said, the median age of the people who live here is 44, so perhaps the City Council thinks if COVID-19 comes to town, it will be NBD.

Still, I'd be tempted to put up nice big 4'x8' PANDEMIC signs -- I've always liked Black, for the occasion, maybe with a nice, subtle, bright orange (horned) Prez, looming in the background (glowing red eyes are a nice touch too), at each entrance to town.

this is not 'leadership'
it is government mandated cowardice and insanity
Run! Run! Lemmings!
The sea is just over the rise!!
