You’re a fucking idiot Charles. Do you really think March rent reflected what was happening now or reflected what was happening the month before?

And people wonder why economies run by Marxists are always such a fucking disaster.

Rents, and home values are gonna start falling soon. And at that point you can kiss your job goodbye too.

@1 Trolling trolly Trolls
Always gotta troll.

Also: "... animals are, in essence, just food."

And, as Reptilians always like to point out

therefore fit to be Harvested.

Pappa rockin', too, baby!

THANKS, Chas.

5

@4 Drinking your bong water again?

7

@6: That's not how it works.

9

@1 Not just Marxists - any sort of Hegelian.

10

Which is not to suggest that Post Modernists are doing a better job.

13

Anytime one must run to the "pejorative" of "Marxist" you know they have no brain of their own. The only people I know who use the term are those who listen to Rantz and Monson among others. Also throw in "commie left". So many have no grasp that none of that shit exists as any form of movement.

15

"Every Job Created Over the Past 11 Years: Vanished."

The jobs you were complaining about?

Yeah, you might be a tad more grateful in the future.

@13 You know Charles calls himself a Marxist so how exactly is calling him what he calls himself a "pejorative"? Let me know how that works smart guy.

16

@13 -- Stupid people don't know they're
Stupid. [now I'm trolling. @1 --

@ Chas -- I would
LOVE to see you
troll these Trolls.

Or just Nuke 'em.

@17 Better update his profile then:

I have come to accept Charles Mudede as my personal Lord and savior.

“In her latest essay, 'The Pandemic Is a Portal' -- from her forthcoming Haymarket Books publication Azadi: Freedom. Fascism. Fiction. -- Arundhati Roy writes:

What is this thing that has happened to us? It’s a virus, yes. In and of itself it holds no moral brief. But it is definitely more than a virus.

Some believe it’s God’s way of bringing us to our senses. Others that it’s a Chinese conspiracy to take over the world.

Whatever it is, coronavirus has made the mighty kneel and brought the world to a halt like nothing else could.

Our minds are still racing back and forth, longing for a return to 'normality,' trying to stitch our future to our past and refusing to acknowledge the rupture. But the rupture exists.

And in the midst of this terrible despair, it offers us a chance to rethink the doomsday machine we have built for ourselves. Nothing could be worse than a return to normality.

Historically, pandemics have forced humans to break with the past and imagine their world anew.

This one is no different. It is a portal, a gateway between one world and the next.

We can choose to walk through it, dragging the carcasses of our prejudice and hatred, our avarice, our data banks and dead ideas, our dead rivers and smoky skies behind us.

Or we can walk through lightly, with little luggage, ready to imagine another world. And ready to fight for it.”

I'll take Plan B.
Thanks, Arundhati.

Red/Blue divide: Sane, rational, intelligent, community-spirited, caring, , compassionate individuals (by definition NOT Trump supporters or uber right-wing GOP) will continue social distancing measures on their own no matter what any governor orders.

Inslee could throw caution to the winds and open everything up tomorrow and none of my family or close friends would change our behavior. We already had those discussions. We're in this for the long haul or until there are effective treatments and/or vaccines. Basically, we're afraid to go back to the way things were.

But hey, I say take off any restrictions for Trump supporters and right-wing crazies. Let them become the larges percentage of those getting critically ill and dying. They have more than earned that right.

23

The flag of traitors and rebels.

25

Well, those asshats at the demonstration are doing their part to make sure that the virus DOES get to rural areas. Now, if we can just figure out a way to prevent them from coming back to the cities for treatment once they start the rural pandemic . . .

26

And, Susan J. Demas, the Confederate flag of treason is there just in case any Republicans in state government there forgot that these demonstrators are good hard-workin' white folks.

27

@ duck fart -- "I don't see this pandemic thing changing very many people's world view." --24.

That's because the Dunning-Kruger affect is Real.

28

And another thing: What we are seeing here is not a violation of the law of supply and demand. There are no fewer people who want or need to live in Seattle than there were 6 months ago. The "demand" for apartments is set by that figure.

The fact that many of them are having (hopefully short-term) difficulty paying the rent does not affect demand until they start moving out en mass (unlikely) or being evicted (current policy will prevent this). Gradually, as more and more leases start to turn over, we'll likely see rents being negotiated down in a lot of cases (this is hardly the time that a landlord wants to deal with a vacancy). That is going to take more than two weeks, though. Also, the new apartments being built are largely at the high end of the market, where peple (mainly tech workers here) still have jobs and income.

That is all.

29

@Purris -- "I say take off any restrictions for Trump supporters and right-wing crazies.

Let them become the larges[t] percentage of those getting critically ill and dying.

32

@15 At no point in time have I seen Charles refer to himself as a Marxist. He is versed in the writings of Marx along with a list of philosophers too long to name. The term "Marxism" is just a word that wingers like to throw out there in order to avoid any sort of good faith economic or social discussion. I can't quote no Marx other than the "go-tos" but no it is purely a construct of the right. As wingers -- those who seem to think self same as you think that even introducing ways to think about a vast and complex system of cooperation and corruption is a sign of not ascribing to group-think. It's not "Marxist" bud. It's called thinking for one's self and sharing SHARING what you are thinking with others at an open table.

35

Actually, the article explains exactly why the market is reacting to supply and demand.

"Many new Seattle apartments that came online recently have been high-end dwellings aimed at the tech economy — a sector that hasn’t seen massive layoffs. In the downtown core where those rentals predominate, 26 new residential buildings opened in 2019 and early 2020, according to the Downtown Seattle Association. Typically, new apartments carry a 30% premium compared to older buildings, Waller said, driving up average rent prices.

"Meanwhile, in older buildings, tenants are choosing to extend leases rather than look for a new apartment. Occupancy rates have stayed high through the end of March, even as some prospective tenants have backed out of leases or stopped their apartment search altogether."

36

@32 He has explicitly said he's not a Marxist a number of times. But he's referring to Marx's dialectical modernism stuff - the tendency of modernists to apply a sort of determinism to social events.

But when mutable name calls him a Marxist, he's using it as a synonym for "commie" that doesn't make him sound like an old geezer.

37

This is what a truly great leader who deeply cares about their constituents' health must do in time of a pandemic crisis:

"He has explicitly said he's not a Marxist a number of times"

Ahh, so he's an ex-Marxist who liked to circle jerk with other Marxists just for shits and giggles.

Just like being an ex-Nazi.

41

In a country overrun by a president who uses hyperbole as much as orange hair dye, I find it unacceptable for journalists to use the same tactic. Sure, Detroit has a virus problem but to say they are overrun with corpses is a flat out lie. People who lived through the black plague know what that feels like. I'm a liberal but I won't fall prey to that BS. One of the many reasons I limit my Stranger reading. When we use hyperbole like that, we are just using fear in the same way Trump is using it. It seems like a lot of folks who claim to be "aware" are just as much hypocrites as the next. For those of you who want to insist Detroit is overrun by corpses, again they are not immune to the pandemic but my friends who live in the city (downtown and residential neighborhoods BTW)do not see any corpses in their eyeshot.

43

@39 I thought I was an ex-homosexual?

once again staggering unemployment figures are released and yet again the market responds favorably to the news.
okay, once it could be a fluke, twice and we remind ourselves that co-relation is not causation, but time after time after time, it is clear there is a pattern.
Wall Street no longer gives a fuck about Main Street, they co-habit uneasily in parallel worlds.
I suspect this market is even inoculated against shitty earnings reports- they are so intoxicated with the spigot of Fed money washing vast quantities of $$ at them what do they care about profits anymore?
Higher unemployment? Let's bail out some more bond-holders!!

55

Moving tf On:
"Why Michael Savage Is Blasting Hannity
and the Right-Wing Media on the Virus

The conservative radio host is still loyal to President Trump but says right-wing media got it all wrong by doubting the severity of the coronavirus early on."

The far far FAR 'right' wing is finally
gonna begin Devouring itselfs.
Excellent.

“There are a lot of people who are ruining the country right now, according to Michael Savage. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Liberal mayors in big cities like San Francisco. Undocumented immigrants. Homeless people.

But for the past two months, listeners to Mr. Savage’s conservative radio show have heard him howl with unabated contempt about another menace: ‘The pimps’ in the right-wing media ‘who tell you what you want to hear’

They are ‘intellectual dwarfs’ and “science illiterates,’ he says, who spent weeks downplaying the threat from the coronavirus epidemic and accusing President Trump’s opponents of exaggerating it to hurt him politically.

On Mr. Savage’s broadcast, which has one of the largest audiences in talk radio with 7.5 million listeners each week, the virus has never been a hoax or a bad case of the sniffles.

He has lectured his fans on the research in detail: How it is transmitted; which treatments are proving effective; and the difference between morbidity and mortality rates.

With no small amount of self-satisfaction, Mr. Savage reminds people of his credentials — a Ph.D. and training in epidemiology — and of the fact that he was one of the few voices in conservative media who had warned them all along.”

By Jeremy W. Peters, April 16, 2020

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/16/us/politics/michael-savage-trump-coronavirus.html?action=click&module=Top%20Stories&pgtype=Homepage

58

More on Jeremy W. Peters' excellent piece:

"His [shock jock Micheal Savage's] views are a striking departure from the accepted version of events among Mr. Trump’s loyalists in the media, who have made a concerted effort to deny that they downplayed the epidemic.

Mr. Savage has attacked the credibility of the conservative media, accused its biggest stars of being too rote and unthinking in their defense of the president, and demanded that they be held accountable for misleading millions of Americans.

'We’re living in a terrible time in America where truth has died,' Mr. Savage, who was one of the first conservative media stars to urge Mr. Trump to run for president, told his audience. 'This is crazy,' he added, pointing to the way the president’s defenders always accuse the left of spreading 'fake news.'

'How can we not let our side be called on the carpet when they lie to the people?'

That was Feb. 24."

So -- Conservatives CAN Have Principles.
EXCELLENT.

Let's see if any of our trolling trolly Trolls can.
NOT holding my breath!

59

@54: You do realize that a higher stock market elevates the mutual funds that a lot of "Main Street" has in its portfolio, including cities and business across this country.

This "main street/common man" schtick of yours is excruciatingly disingenuous.

60

@51 - Hmm, NYC is reporting that they have more than double their usual number of deaths from all causes since the outbreak struck. A Chinese analysis of victims found that 0.2% were ages 10-39, about double the rate for seasonal flu/pneumonia. So, it's not really limited to just those who would have croaked in no time anyway.

62

The funny thing is that that guy holding the confederate flag is wearing a mask. Come on, in for a penny, in for a pound.

70

@1 -- The armed services are indeed hiring.

Now go be a good little boy and emulate your hero, Chris Kyle.

I'll even pay for the range ammo.

72

Working class people generally don’t have portfolios and don’t give a damn about the stock market. You are talking to your peer group.

It doesn’t work for us. Let them eat cake - will not work for you.

73

71 Just buzz off. You have nothing we want to hear.

74

1 I guess you are not aware. This economy is a disaster already for the majority of the people.
Don’t see how it could be any worse under a marxist economy which wants worker control of the means of production. We have never really had that. I am not a marxist but I am for people having resources so they can live a decent life and not have to work just to be able to pay the rent and barely pay their bills working 2 or 3 jobs. Like right now.

Right now we have three people or so that own half the country’s wealth. That would include Jeff Bozo. They don’t pay taxes and use cheap labor. No they aren’t any better than you or I and they don’t deserve their incredible wealth which they have stolen from our communities. They cause terrible poverty and terrible wars and there is no justification for it. It must stop. And this must change.

76

All empires come to an end - the Egyptian, the Roman, the British. The US is an empire and with
the practices of an empire it is coming to an end because of greed, exploitation and continued practices of war and oppression.

77

@75. Half of all American live paycheck to paycheck. 70 percent have less than $1,000.00 in savings, and the 44% of Americans with some retirement contributions to their employers' 401ks have it automatically deducted and skimmed off the top by investors who base their futured in bubbles and falsified ratings and insider trading that will leave most retirements pillaged and worthless to buy platinum parachutes for the .001%.

79

77 cont

Particularly with the incoming global market crash that will tank all investments when faced with reality that the economy is not working for ever more Americans because their taxes are not reinvested in this country, but stored abroad to crunch numbers and appease bean counters.

81

@80. It isnt about me, the point is that retirement investments bound up in amything but treasury bonds are about to go bye bye for all but the top.

82

75 You seem to be a slow learner. You know nothing about me. What I have or don’t have.
The fact is that many people are suffering from lack of resources right now because of greed, exploitation, bigotry etc. We are facing a deep and dark depression. Many people lost their homes in the 2008 bank debacle. This could most likely be worse. We have a huge percentage of people that are just hanging on.

Do you have a job or career that is bullet proof? Are you independently wealthy? You really can’t afford to sneer at others. You could - through no fault of your own - be joining others on the soup lines.

86

We need to unify and stand together against the 20%.

89

85 I don’t have to go anywhere Mr. so called tough guy. I know the people are robbed and the only people who have everthing owed to them are in the top percentage of the population. I don’t hate the country. I hate the tiny majority that run the country that own the economy. The history of this country is nasty indeed. Apparently you haven’t noticed. Unfortunately.

Everyone is a jello head to you that doesn’t make it in this system. I’m just as tough as you Mr.
And i am a 81 year old woman with cancer. I am a hell of a lot tougher and you have no idea what I have been through.

90

87 Very amusing. I can’t wait to hear more.

92

87 Very amusing. I can’t wait to hear more. Are you past your tenth birthday now?
