I know I'd been wondering where Inslee's been getting his hair cut. Glad that's resolved.

Something else I'm glad about. Seeing another slaughterhouse shut down indefinitely. Now, I'm sure that, in light of this sentiment, the troll-etariat of this blog will be unanimous in their hate for me—and I welcome their hatred. In fairness, I do feel bad for the workers who are losing their shitty jobs, and so my hope is that, through the miracle of our dynamic capitalist system, they will be able to quickly transition to different and slightly less shitty jobs.

@1 - It's a hard job, but it's only "shitty" because it's not a job you'd like to do. It's not a fun job, but neither waste collection and processing, mortuaries, and - you get my point. Or is it "shitty" because it's eating meat that contributes to greenhouse gases and global warming - so is working at Houston refinery.

It's good to feel bad for the workers. But giving them the dignity of being supportive of their occupation is also good.

3

raindrop @2, I find it touching that you're offended that someone has the temerity to suggest that there are shitty jobs in this world. It would be nice to think that all the people who hold these jobs don't themselves find them shitty--that really in truth there is no such thing as a shitty job, and it's all just to each his own.

I'm going to stick with my assumption that the world is not as wonderful as we might hope, and make another observation. A lot of the jobs that are now classified as essential are pretty shitty. Which leads to a broader (obvious) observation: society would not function without people who are willing to do such jobs.

You're welcome to have the last word at this point. I know you will just as sure as the home team bats last.

@3 Shitty jobs?

Wow, your privilege is showing. Oh look, another white kid with a college degree.

Working in factory food processing is a shitty job. That doesn’t mean the front line workers are shitty though. The conditions are hazardous, unsanitary, the pay is low compared to what the processors bring in and the work is hard. It’s the low pay and no benefits that make it a shitty job. That’s why many of those workers are on guest worker visas or not documented. Companies like Tyson and Smithfield know they can push the labor around and not face any repercussions.

8

@7 - No, it's a job that you applied an adjective to so it's an opinion. As we know, opinions vary.

9

@8 no, it is a shitty job. it doesn't have to be a shitty job, but our laws allow it to be, so it is.

10

I worked for National Food Corporation processing chickens and can confirm its shitty. Guess I’m just a privileged libtard.

11

The meat packers union was one of the first to be destroyed as the post-war labor order was unraveled. Jobs like that used to be middle class.

13

@12: The same reason people don't realize how arrogant they've become.

15

@14: Of course, but you wouldn't say directly to that person "How can you stand that shitty job?", but rather "You're work must be very hard, how do you mange it?".

That's my subtle, though contorted, point.

16

That voodoo doll is pretty freaking funny. I'm salivating at the prospect of deeply offended snowflakes expressing outrage at the concept. Somewhere Kathy Griffin is smiling.

4M(ppl)/day÷2300(cows)/day=1739ppl/cow/day
How is that even possible?

18

@17 I had the same question. Not sure how that math breaks down. Does everyone get half a beef nugget?

19

If someone said to me “You're work must be very hard, how do you mange it?" about any one of my shitty jobs I would know that person is clueless and privileged.

20

@19: Great segue then to say "What an understatement!"

21

@18
Maybe it's a homeopathic amount of beef idk

22

@4/8:

Since it appears you have nothing better to do right now, perhaps you'd be willing to work at a food processing plant for a few weeks, then come back and report to the rest of the class on your experience, m'kay?

Forgive me for revisiting this thread, but I do have to just stop and say to Raindrop here...

Raindrop, I truly admire you. I admire your tireless championing of the pedantic principle that we are not allowed to apply subjective descriptions to anyone else's experience lest someone else come along and willfully misconstrue it all as being pejorative. I don't see how I could have the psychological energy and the sheer time to find offense in so many obscure places. I tip my hat to you, my friend. You are the king (and yes, king, not queen) of this rabbit hole.
