Rich,

I can't say I know you well, but I have met you in person once, and both your journalism, and your poetry are top drawer, so please you and the rest of the Stranger staff stay safe.

I'm jungled up down in Alameda, and should be on a barge* this Friday, so in a few weeks I'll have a bit more scratch to donate to Slog.

And those of you in town, if you have it send a few bucks the Stranger's way, also support your local bars and eateries, they won't make it without you.

Take care all of you sloggers@!

3

@1; before Dec 7, 1941 the Republicans wanted the U.S. to enter WW2 on the Axis side, true fact.

And anyone here looking for a movie,

Public redress over decisions made by politicians over the recommendations of public health experts is always healthy in a democracy. Inslee is prudent and doing a good job, but let's not shut up dissent and think that we're always right.

7

@4: I hope you're reunited with your GF asap.

9

I've really been enjoying all of these pro life Republicans admitting money is more important than, you know, life.

We may as well call this The First Reopening. Cant wait to be having these same tired debates this fall or winter.

10

Great job, Governor Inslee.

We're winning this fight everyone. Let's keep it going.

12

Thank you, Rich, for another well written and informative article. And thank you and bless you, Governor Jay Inslee, for continuing to do such an amazing job despite unnecessary GOP obstruction, smoke, and mirrors.

@10 Lastlight: Agreed and seconded. We're certainly way ahead of those in Trump Country.

14

Shocked to see that Inslee's support among the 'stay at home on your ass mooching off the public dole' crowd remains very firm....

15

shocking to see
repubs deny reality
when Life is on the Line
oh, a little COVID's just fine
when there's Money to be made
look no further than repubs for shade

They're ''pro'' Life from

after, it all depends

Alcoholics drink regardless. Covid-19 is just delightful excuse to pour another. Not an argument.

"Seattle’s Leaders Let Scientists
Take the Lead. New York’s Did Not"

And look where that got them...

"The initial coronavirus outbreaks on the East and West Coasts emerged at roughly the same time. But the danger was communicated very differently.

Epidemiology is a science of possibilities and persuasion, not of certainties or hard proof. 'Being approximately right most of the time is better than being precisely right occasionally,' the Scottish epidemiologist John Cowden wrote, in 2010. 'You can only be sure when to act in retrospect.'

Epidemiologists must persuade people to upend their lives—to forgo travel and socializing, to submit themselves to blood draws and immunization shots—even when there’s scant evidence that they’re directly at risk." --By Charles Duhigg; April 26, 2020

Thank the stars we have a printing press to support all non-economic activities, to pay all our bills. Whew! Just like one bi monopoly game! Play on, until the game ends.

19

@13:

Nobody is minimizing any of those risks, but which of them would you characterize as being worse than dead?

20

American freedom has it's risks. Add this one to the list because if you drive a car, have sex, own a dog, or drink/smoke, Are obese, have diabetes, are allergic to bees, or are of a minority skin color, you sleep like a baby with far more danger than covid presents. That being said, what about this crisis amounts on balance to the situation we have now? It is clear that leadership of this state and others along the the west coast have conspired to keep us in our homes to shake down the federal government. To gin up fear in an election year in vulnerable populations who tend to vote conservative. This is what you call tyranny. The money the government pours into our pockets grows weaker by the minute. Next comes the increased prices because of shortages in labor and also the INEVITABLE inflation that will break us.

23

@17 kristofarian: And the population density of the biggest metropolis in the U.S., New York City, NY, at 8.399 million people is itself bigger than that of the entire state of Washington--at 7.8 million (NYC is over 10 times bigger than the population of Seattle (at 744,955, in 2018).
Let's give a shout out to our scientists and healthcare workers here in the PNW!

Remind us again -- which of these are highly contagious?

25

@ProfHiz -- Great comment, including this: "And you think putting people back on the front lines right before we have this thing licked is to the benefit of the working class. You are a fucking idiot."

Pushing us even further tf Away from Back-To-It than fucking EVER.

Perhaps we Neverr catch the Fuck back up? What if the bug does a few flips and somersaults into some rapidly-evolving thing & we never ever get another Golden Opportunity to catch the Fuck Up with the lil' Fucker? Is that Impossible? (No, not asking You, trollingtrollyTrolleytroll -- as the Ignoramus [from Uranus?], y'alls needn't Bother -- I won't read it anywhey).

“I guess we are destined to repeat the same mistake made during the Spanish Flu.

By reopening too early, and our so-called ‘leaders’ waffling and giving mixed and confusing messages (i.e. Pence visiting hospital without a mask, even though people have been advised to wear them, and Trump and Kushner with their revisionist ‘news’ briefings—just making up their own reality that has nothing at all to do with the world the rest of us are living in) we are undoubtedly going to have a second deadlier wave.

This virus is so highly contagious that most people who go back to normal life are going to get it and we will be right back where we started with hospitals overwhelmed and businesses are going to end up going under anyway.

The only way to get through this crisis is strong leadership to create new connective pathways that can quickly connect the unemployed with necessary income, food and medical care.

Unfortunately we don’t have that leadership in America. At all. Instead we have a “president” who courts divisiveness and has pitted states against one another and deflects responsibility at every opportunity. What a sad and dark time for our country.” –BT, North Carolina; April 30

@auntie Gee: Speaking of Frontliners:
Wowser:

"Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is doing the work voters asked her to do, and has unveiled a plan to provide front-line medical workers a tuition-free college education post-crisis, a plan inspired by the World War II GI Bill."

They keep that kinda shit up
the Green New Deal's gonna
