Imagine that, people don't want to get sick and die. Who knew? As for the 17% that do, well they should feel free to sacrifice themselves (I mean if they are so eager to offer up everyone else, why not let them go first)?

3

Obviously people expect their workplace to be safe. And if it's not, people won't shop there. And workers won't be happy.

Remember, billionaires here are actually GETTING RICHER during this crisis.

Please, go first! Put YOUR life at risk. Allow everyone else to stay home and be safe.

Of course that's not what you mean, right? You want to go back to doing what you were doing before this happened and expect everyone who met your needs (whoever they are) to be there so you can live your life at the expense of others. You want to go back to work, go out to eat, gather in large crowds (what is your preference - concerts, crowded bars, MAGA rallies, ?) and do what you want when you want to do it and get what you want when you want it. You being willing to sacrifice yourself requires everyone else do the same. Unless you and the 17% who are willing to endanger lives to reopen the economy simply commit mass suicide and give all of your money to Trump so he can save the economy (and his re-election)! See how absurd that is? I mean, seriously? SERIOUSLY. Why should 87% of the people in this country sacrifice themselves for the 17% like you?

4.5% of the world’s population, and 30% of the world’s cases and deaths — that’s failure on a grand scale (even for Trump).

There will be NO knowing what the actual fatality rate is until it's over.

Right now of recovered cases worldwide 14% are dead. Right now recovered cases here in the U.S. have a fatality rate of 20%

As for herd immunity (which has been discussed over and over in the comments on slog):

Charles, I'm surprised you don't see the obvious--this is yet another of the many examples of benefits accruing to the old at the expense of the young. About 75% of Covid fatalities are 65 years old or older, yet we are willingly closing down for business in ways that will disproportionally affect younger people for decades to come. You frame this as people are either dumb (it's only stupid haircuts) or evil because they want something other than a future that's burned to the ground. Your standard seems to be 100% safety for everyone or it's "necro-capitalism". Sheesh, you're getting played.

The photo is the stripped basement of Macy’s. The space is being further stripped back to bare concrete for future use.

@11 it's not free money. it's taxpayer money. and given that this country has bailed out corporations and wall street repeatedly (to the tune of trillions) and has spent trillions on wars (with no accountability for where that money went) and the fact that this country has an enormous and bloated military budget, there is plenty of money to give the people in this country, for years. rescind the tax cuts (i mean billionaires have made 43 trillion dollars in the last two months - the same amount of time 40 million people lost their jobs) and there would be even more money. pretending this country has no money to care for the needs of every single person that lives here is a flat out fucking lie. the money is there an it belongs to the people.

@15 FTW

@12 Charles works for a living. Hence the article you're commenting on.

Why is there so much Dune in the comments these past few days?! I mean, I’m not complaining, and the books have about a bajillion quotable lines it’s just - I mean...I don’t know. I’m primarily a lurker; been here for years. Maybe I’m just peeved that Dune is clearly THE right bait to lure me out of my cave.

I have an idea: why don't we sacrifice Donald Jackass Trump, Mike Dencey Pencey, Mitch McDumbbell, Bill Barf, Babyface Kavanaugh ad nauseum by throwing the entire GOP into a live volcano?

21

@15: I second it--xina for the WIN!

25

@24:

And what precisely would be the problem if everyone DID get $60,000 a year "for no reason"? I mean, it's not like they're going to sit on that money and not spend it, amiright?

@26

It's Feebs the Troll. Just ignore.
