"American Billionaires Have Made $434 billion During Pandemic: Between mid-March and mid-May, the very top of the one percent saw its wealth soar like never before. 'Amazon’s Jeff Bezos and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg had the biggest gains,' reports NBC. The former added $34.6 billion to his galactic-size pot; the latter $25 billion."

Nevertheless the Bootlikkker 'class' will be on here
whining how everyone (but Them!) just wants

FREE SHIT

but they EARNED IT!
they'll shriek till
the cows
come
home
.

8

@6: How does their wealth preclude anyone else from getting wealthy?

9

@8 -- non sequitur.

10

@8- it doesn't. @6 and his ilk are fucking idiots.

14

Hold up, is that the presidential seal on his face mask? If so, that's fucking precious.

15

If I can’t cough directly in your face and grab every cashier my freedoms are in danger.

17

@10 -- untrue.
I'm not [currently] fucking Anyone.

You're Projecting as
is your [collective] wont.

18

How does a monopoly prevent the free market. I am a serious adult. If the monopoly gets to bad you can just shoot it and problem solved. This is capitalism.

20

@9: That's something you say when the cat's got your tongue.

@13: There's no need for wealth equality.

21

@19: They take money for goods and services. You're not poorer because Bezos is almost a trillionaire.

It's like complaining that best selling authors use up all the words to write leaving struggling writers and poets dying in the streets.

23

@22: Wealth IS an infinite supply as will always be a need for commerce.

24

Actually Trump called her a "rogue." You've called her a "rouge." Perhaps the only instance where Trump has outspelled someone?

He called her a "rouge Secretary of State" on a mission to steal the election from him. How?

25

@20 -- that's what you say
when you're an Idiot.
See: @10.

26

I don't understand this constant bashing of tech billionaires for having billions in stock.

The incredible (and tragic and dangerous) wealth disparity in this country has a minute (and indirect) amount to do with how much money Gates, Bezos, etc. have in personal wealth. It may be a symptom (and even that is in question) of the systemic societal issues that create such wealth disparity in the first place, but I'm not seeing the rational connection between Bezos having a net worth of a hundred billion, and the average citizen struggling to make ends meet.

Does Bezos run Amazon any differently if he was worth only a hundred million? How much wealth do you need to take away from him before Amazon stops being "evil"?

27

@4 - white guy in the video looked like he was heading to work (briefcase & clean clothes). Didn't look like the standard downtown tweaker/junkie. But regardless of whether he's a tweaker or not, he deserved to get thumped. Asian guy should have stomped on his face.

30

@27 dvs99, in a comic book universe, yeah, that would be justice. In reality, no, don't confront these idiots in a physical manner - they may pull out a gun and shoot you (and then claim self-defense... [eye roll]). Call 911.

33

Taking a drive is fine, as long as you don't pull over in a small town and sneeze all over the citizenry. Never leaving your house is unnecessary and counterproductive in that it drives "quarantine burnout" which is a real thing. This is actually not hard. Wear a mask when you are out among other people. Distance yourself by at least six feet whenever possible. Be reasonable.

34

@28 blip, hmm, it seems like lots of people are doing exactly that... otherwise why keep harping on how much these people's stock has risen? Seems like there's a rather explicit demonization of billionaires simply because they are worth billions.

Bezos is a billionaire = evil. That is what's being peddled, billionaires as the bogeyman, and it's a disservice to actually addressing the systemic issues that cause such economic inequality.

It's not that I have a personal interest in defending billionaires. It's the lazy correlations that are endemic to news sites like The Stranger and HuffPost (and even Bernie Sanders) - that's what I object to.

35

@21 For pete's sake - the standard commie model is that billionaires are taking their wealth from employees, not from customers. Do you really need to be told this?

36

@32 blip, sorry, trying to find the most delicate way of saying this, but I'm not so sure your have a solid understanding of this subject. ;-)

39

Perhaps people would not gripe about Bezos and his cronies raking in 43 TRILLION dollars in two months (the same two months 40 million people in this country lost their jobs) if the government chose to give real money (taxpayer money all of it) to the PEOPLE and not corporations (Munchkin is still hoardiing the $500 BILLION from the CARES ACT, why?), if employers like Bezos who are clearly profiting off of this horror show paid the people working for them (you know, doing all of the labor that is making them rich) better wages, did not fire them for raising their voices about being concerned about conditions at their work place, and were in any way interested in doing anything to prevent their employees from dying (Amazon warehouse workers keep dying from COVID-19 and Amazon refuses to tell the people working in those warehouses how many people are sick, etc).

I will never understand the endless and relentless defense of the billionaire class by people here. You know you aren't one of them, right? That you never will be, right? That the people who perform the labor to make them as wealthy as they are are not paid a fraction of what they should be, right? I mean more of you on this forum rail against how $15/hr for the working class will destroy everything and in the same breath defend people making more money than they could ever spend as if they are gods of some sort instead of parasites and murderers. Amazon has a history (long before this pandemic) of exploiting those who work in the warehouses and allowing them to die (of heat stroke mostly) and yet people here bleat on about anyone who does not like their job at Amazon should find work elsewhere. Why? Why, instead, is it not expected of Amazon, raking in hand over fist, to treat the people who do the work that makes the actual profit to be paid a big wage, with benefits, and be treated really, really well?

Oh, right, capitalism!

You are all completely deranged.

This country is hoarding obscene amounts of wealth and refusing to help the people who created it. But yeah, keep on blathering about what idiots people are because they see what's happening and believe it should be different.

Same assholes who want people to just go back to work already and if they die, oh well, too bad for them. We need to get back to eating out and getting our hair done.

All without any irony at all.

Unfuckiingbelievable.

40

@30 - in the "comic book universe" i grew up in (let's call it "Bellevue"), if I had done that, the guy would have most likely kicked my ass and I would have deserved it. Full stop.

Not saying I would have done it, this is not some Internet tough guy rant, but the Asian guy in the video looked like he was thinking about it and would have been fully justified in doing so.

41

@39 Xina,

Bezos is an asshole (at least in the respects we’re discussing). However, it has nothing to do with whether he’s a billionaire or not.

It’s not about defending billionaires or assholes. I’m totally up for 90% tax rates at a certain amount of millions, etc. They may have worked very hard for that wealth (or not), but they couldn’t have that wealth without the society it was generated in, and therefor society has a right to a portion of it. We can decide as a society what that portion should be, and I would favor quite a large portion.

What I’m taking issue with is conflating largely unrelated issues, and the danger of that is you end up blaming billionaires when that doesn’t actually address any of the issues that you want to solve (that's what Republicans are known for). As I suggested before, once you off their heads, how are any of these issues addressed?

42

@38 blip, don't disagree w/ taxing at higher rate (see my post abv). The issue is that wealth is not finite, and it's kind of hard to have a rational discussion about economics without that basic understanding.

43

Warren and Harris would be way better than Klobuchar, who has very little appeal to progressives.

45

@43,

Feel like her appeal begins and ends with a perceived ability to deliver some key midwestern swing states. I'm begrudgingly OK w/ that, provided she doesn't have her eye on a promotion come 2024 (and it goes without saying that ol' JB is a one-termer.)

46

@45. As with Tim Kaine

47

Billionaires are awesome. You can read about that almost every day -- at least for now.

50

@48: If anyone, that last sentence should rule out Stacey Abrams.

When asked why she doesn't run for the GA Senate, she responds that she's committed to increasing voting, which is good - but not the professional political experience she should start building.

At least Sara Palin was a governor. Kinda arrogant to think she could go from a state legislator to VP in one shot. Of course, she still has more political experience than Trump - but why keep that dreadfully low bar?

51

@49. What you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this thread is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.

53

@49: You'll change your mind come a fever, shortness of breath, and worse.

You can evaluate that getting sick with COVID-19 is a slim probability for you. Nevertheless, you can never discount that it is a forever possibility for you.

Don't conflate 'fear' with 'intelligence'.

56

@49
No, they won't.
Civil rights don't include the right to harm your neighbor. That's what tort law is based on.
The fact is every time a public health issue arises in the US, it always devolves to 'I want my freedom to do whatever' - whether it's about AIDS and STD prevention, refusal to get vaccines, and now public distancing to slow Covid-19.
Will the last brain cell leaving the US, please turn out the lights?

57

Actually, I did make a mistake with the number, the actual number is $434,000,000,000 (so BILLION not TRILLION and $434 BILLION not $43 TRILLION).

Jeff Bezos has raked in $34,600,000,000 in the last two months — 346 times the $100 million donation to food banks he can't stop talking about.

58

Well yes, liberals and those of us on the left DO also hate the lockdown.
Inslee, Brown, Newsom, Whitmer, and Cuomo hate the lockdowns.
Nobody DOESN'T hate the lockdowns.
It's just that there was no workable alternative to putting them in place, since people were refusing to social distance and acting as though the Bill of Rights guarantees freedom of infection.
BTW...in the Eighties, some of the same people complaining now about having to make the trivial changes of wearing masks in public and stay six feet away from other people IN public were trying to use the AIDS crisis to as a justification for recriminalizing gay sex. Masks are unacceptable, but persecuting people for living their personal truth WASN'T?

59

1: So...you'd agree that people should be fined and, if need be arrested and sentenced to home confinement for REFUSING to social distance?

Freedom does not mean "I have the right to be a selfish, reckless jerk during a health crisis".

If people had taken the pandemic seriously from the start, the lockdowns would not have had to happen. They had to happen because too may people believed was the right to not care if their own actions do harm to others- a right that has never actually existed- mattered more than preventing or at least limiting what have now been tens of thousands(soon to be over 100,000)deaths in this country- deaths that mainly occurred because those people, and the president who doesn't give a damn whether they live or die, don't care how many other people die in this situation.

60

49

Get the fuck outta here with that nonsense. Your comment reeks of privilege and entitlement. Forced imprisonment and seizure of property for a targeted group of people has no comparison to a mandate for all to reduce social contact (which isn't even enforced) in the name of public health.

You already lost all credibility when you harped on and on in every thread about this being no worse than the flu.... You've been wrong since Day 1.

61

Another Amazon warehouse worker dies of COVID-19

This brings the suspected number of Amazon workers who have died from coronavirus up to eight -- based on media reports -- though the company has not confirmed how many people have contracted the disease or died from it despite mounting pressure for transparency.

65

Whatever, you guys can deny comparisons to internment camps and medieval torture chambers all you like, but I've no doubt if you'd seen the size of the line at the Taco Bell drive-thru last Friday night you'd be singin' a different tune...

66

@41-after we cut off their heads we can make delicious soup out of their spines. I’m sure Kshama has an awesome recipe.

67

@65
What about 14 hours AFTER you went to the Taco Bell?

69

@66 dvs99, mmm, that does sound good! ;-)

70

@65 Poe's law? I'm afraid I didn't see the lines at Taco Bell so I don't understand your point. Are you saying Taco Bell has no business because all their customers are in the internment camps, Or are you saying the guards let the people out to go get tacos?
Now for the people of Japanese decent being allowed out every Friday for tacos wasn't really all that great because tacos are not traditional Japanese cuisine, but for the average American it does not seem all that bad.

"Please do not feed the trolls" [unless you can deliver a sick burn, even if said burn is only in your own imagination]

72

You know what I think. I think every single person in this country who can read should read Anne Frank's Diary right now. I think every single person in this country should think about how she and her family and others lived hiding in an attic for 25 months, where they had to be quiet all of the time so they would not be discovered. I think every single person in this country should then have to think about how she and her sister lived in a concentration camp for two years. I think every single person should think about how Anne died of Typhus and how her body was tossed in a mass grave like garbage. And then I think every single person in this country should STFU and do what needs to be done to get through this.

"Trust? Holy covid! You don't have to be a genius to know that a government that protracted the war in Vietnam interminably, brought us the degradation of Watergate, believed that destroying Iraq was necessary for America's safety, did not protect the nation from the 9/11 attacks is not trustworthy.

If that does not convince you, take a good look at our non-functioning Congress which has dragged on for decades.

And, number one on my list of indicators of national ineptitude is the complete failure for 75 years to provide a top-quality universal healthcare system in the richest nation the world has ever known.

Geez Louise, you'd have to be completely naive to trust our collective self-serving bumblers.

Another comment from "Will the Coronavirus Kill What’s Left of Americans’ Faith in Washington?" "In 2019, just 17 percent of Americans said they trusted the federal government to do the right thing. The pandemic appears to be eroding their faith even more."

"I am a retired government employee-I worked for a city, two states, and the federal government.

The vast majority of career public servants see themselves as working to make the world a better place.

We get as frustrated as citizens with the bureaucracy, and the reinvention of the wheel every four or six years.

The political appointees frequently come in with disdain for the people who have worked in an agency for years.

One political person told me flat out that if I were really a good lawyer I would have wanted to make more money. He had no understanding or appreciation of the fact that some people choose public service.

The Trump administration has taken this disdain to another level.

Thousands of experienced government employees who worked through several administrations have either retired or left--that is why we are so poorly prepared for this crisis."

Speaking of Making America Grieve Again:

“Mr. Trump and his advisers have said that he does [care], but he has made scant effort to demonstrate it this Memorial Day weekend.

He finally ordered flags lowered to half-staff at the White House only after being badgered to do so by his critics and otherwise took no public notice as the American death toll from the coronavirus pandemic approached a staggering 100,000.

While the country neared six digits of death, the president who repeatedly criticized his predecessor for golfing during a crisis spent the weekend on the links for the first time since March.

When he was not zipping around on a cart, he was on social media embracing fringe conspiracy theories, amplifying messages from a racist and sexist Twitter account and lobbing playground insults at perceived enemies, including his own former attorney general.

This was a death toll that Mr. Trump once predicted would never be reached. In late February, he said there were only 15 coronavirus cases in the United States, understating even then the actual number, and declared that “the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero.”

In the annals of the American presidency, it would be hard to recall a more catastrophically wrong prediction.

Even after he later acknowledged that it would not be zero, he insisted the death toll would fall ‘substantially below the 100,00’ mark.

As it stands now, the coronavirus has infected 1.6 million and taken so many lives it is as if an entire midsize American city — say Boca Raton, Fla., just to pick an example — simply disappeared.”

More

"Among those who regularly assailed Mr. Obama for golfing was Mr. Trump — by one count, 27 times. “Can you believe that, with all of the problems and difficulties facing the U.S., President Obama spent the day playing golf,” Mr. Trump wrote in 2014.

He was criticizing Mr. Obama for golfing after just two cases of Ebola were confirmed in the United States.

“When you’re president you sort of say, like, ‘I’m going to sort of give it up for a couple of years and I’m really going to focus on the job,’” he said on 'Fox & Friends.'"
