Biden quickly apologized, something Trump would never do. But that's not going to stop the media from going apoplectic about it. This may drop his support from the black community all the way down to the low 90s.

3

Meh. he's gaffe-prone and as far as gaffes go, this wasn't much. It'll blow over to be replaced by some fresh outrage.
And it does point to the greater truth of what he said- the utter fraudulence and opportunism of black support for Trump when it is manifestly obvious the contempt that the Trump clan holds for black people, for African-American culture and for their demands to fair and equal treatment by the criminal justice system.

From the NY Times' top-rated comment on the article "Biden Apologizes for Saying Black Voters ‘Ain’t Black’ if They’re Considering Trump" in today's New York Times.

The former vice president ignited controversy in a testy exchange during a radio interview with Charlamagne Tha God on ''The Breakfast Club.''

The comment: “I'm black. The ‘if you do this then you ain't black’ thing is a phrase that is said in jest by black people often.

I listen to the interviewer, Charlamagne Tha God, sometimes and he says the phrase in jest.

Joe said it in jest. If someone actually thinks that any black person who is voting for Biden, would suddenly switch to the guy who famously said there were ‘fine people on both sides’ at a rally where one side was full of white supremacists, based on this statement, then they must not think the average black person is very bright.

That, and the fact that Trump has bungled the response to pandemic that is killing a large percentage of African-Americans.”

Biden sucks. He is an ass hat. It's certainly not a true choice, but between Biden and mass murderer and grifter to the extreme Trump is not an option.

Nothing says I don't give a shit about my job like residing in the White House and going golfing while hundreds of thousands of people in the United States are sick and dying. Oh and nearly 50 million people have lost their jobs (and the GOP says there is no money to help them, but Trump is golfing and taxpayers are paying for it).

I think we should all send a strongly worded donation to Joe Biden.

Maybe in the amount of $1200.

That will get action.

22

@19: You don't have to pair golf with Trump to get the point across that he doesn't care. We all know golf has long history with presidents - I grow weary that that persistent media conflation.

Past presidents and VPs worked very hard at their jobs, so Americans give deference to letting them enjoy the game. It helps clear their minds. Indeed, important decisions have been made on the golf course, like when Bush 41 picked Quayle as his VP on the course.

Oops. At least Barbara gave him a tongue lashing that day.

Yeah because I totally remember other presidents golfing during major crises. I mean how many hours after 9/11 did GWB hit the golf course? Please.

Defending Trump golfing right now (the same guy who said he'd be too busy working to golf, who slammed Obama for golfing every time he golfed - which he did not do at golf courses he owned and which he did a mere fraction of the amount Trump has done in this three years, and who has bilked over a billion dollars from the taxpayers, putting it directly into his own pockets, while pretending he doesn't take his salary, you know, for the job he has not done from the day he took it) just proves you are the piece of shit troll everyone here believes you to be.

40

Republicans should all go out and have fun this weekend. No need for a mask. There is no danger.

41

Trump is sociopathic human shitbag, and if there was actual justice in this world, he would be tried for treason and executed. I’m dead serious about that. He doesn’t get the benefit of the doubt on ANYTHING. We’re years past cutting him some slack or being understanding or making excuses or what about-isms. He lost the privilege of “enjoying the game”. And he doesn’t have a mind to “clear”. Intellectually he’s a fucking idiot. If his golf trips resulted in any sort of better Presidency, I would tell him to play golf everyday. But it doesn’t. He’s still a fucking idiot after every golf trip. End of story.

42

@41 - True, however being outraged about his golf outings is optional.

43

Joe Biden is and was a terrible candidate. The Democratic establishment is seemingly hopeless. Republicans are evil, but the Democratic party would rather hold onto their tiny sliver of "power" than look in the mirror and realize they're their own worst enemy.

If Biden pulls off a mini miracle and actually wins the presidency (and yes, I pray he wins - I'd rather appear "wrong" than appear "right"), the establishment will claim they knew best all along. However, the analogy I would use is that's like playing Russian-roulette and then claiming you're a good shot when there isn't a bullet in the chamber. No dumbfucks, you got lucky.

And if he loses... I'm in danger of falling into the no-vote protest camp. At a certain point, I have to question whether being an enabler is worse than sitting out in protest. What is it going to take to for the Democratic party to get their collective head out of their ass? Apparently none of the political shit-show we've witnessed over the last few decades has.

And the problems are so systemic to the way our government works, the way the two-party system works, that none of this will ever be fixed. We will continue a downward spiral of things getting worse and worse, with an ever increasing disparity between the haves and have-nots, until the have-nots are a virtual slave class, or until the have-nots rise up in civil revolt and overthrow the government.

In any case, we're screwed, and there's absolutely nothing any of us can do to prevent some version of one of those two scenarios from happening. It's just a matter of how quickly we get there.

44

@40 They are - have you seen the crowds? It is true insanity. Even if COVID-19 does not kill you, it is a HORRIFIC virus that nearly destroys you when it doesn't kill you. Why so many people believe they are immune is beyond comprehension - especially with every story that comes out where people are being exposed - by their hair dressers (140 at one salon); a pool party in Arkansas; beaches everywhere. Is it a death wish? Is it a homicidal streak? Is it simply sheer stupidity? What is this country going to look like by the 4th of July?

A Man Shared A Shocking Photo Of What COVID-19 Did To Him After Six Weeks In A Hospital "I wanted to show it can happen to anyone. He normally worked out six or seven times a week. He weighed about 190 pounds.

On a related note, speaking of
Enemies of these United States of America:

"It’s common to say now that the Sanders campaign failed. I think that’s a mistake. I think it was an extraordinary success, completely shifted the arena of debate and discussion. Issues that were unthinkable a couple years ago are now right in the middle of attention.

The worst crime he committed, in the eyes of the establishment, is not the policy he’s proposing; it’s the fact that he was able to inspire popular movements, which had already been developing — Occupy, Black Lives Matter, many others — and turn them into an activist movement, which doesn’t just show up every couple years to push a lever and then go home, but applies constant pressure, constant activism and so on.

That could affect a Biden administration. It could also — even if it’s just a holding action, it means there’s time to deal with the major crises.

Take Medicare for All or, the other major plank in Sanders’s program, free college education.

Across the whole mainstream spectrum, all the way to what’s called the left in the mainstream, this is condemned as too radical for Americans.

Just think what that means. That’s an attack on American culture and society, which you would expect from some hostile enemy.

What it’s saying is it’s too radical to say that we should rise to the level of comparable countries. They all have some form of national healthcare.

Most of them have free higher education — the best-performing countries nationally, like Finland, free; Germany, free; right to our south, Mexico, a poor country, high-quality higher education, free.

So, to say we should rise to the level of the rest of the world is considered too radical for Americans.

It’s an astonishing comment. As I say, it’s a critique of America that you’d expect from some super hostile enemy."

“A global pandemic of a highly transmissible deadly virus has been a daunting challenge for all nations.

But imagine for a moment if we had a president who rose to the challenge?

Imagine if Trump had acted on the information given to him in January.

Yes, he stopped some travel from China, but then he did nothing, or worse, he denied there was a problem for six long weeks, until finally declaring a national emergency in mid-March.

Imagine, instead, if he had been a real leader?

Picture FDR or Abraham Lincoln or Winston Churchill. Or even Ronald Reagan or George W or Barack Obama. Imagine if Trump had rallied American know-how.

Imagine if he set the tone by taking the threat seriously, by ramping up production of PPE, by creating centralized guidance, by taking responsibility for combating the crisis, instead of leaving it all to the states?

Trump has demonstrated a monumental failure of leadership.

Unfortunately, he is still failing.

To tweet ‘LIBERATE MICHIGAN’ is not leadership.

It is reckless.

To refuse to wear a mask is not leadership, it's abdicating his responsibility to portray what all good citizens need to do to protect our fellow citizens.

Trump was tested. And he failed miserably.

Yes, the test was as difficult as any we've ever faced. But isn't that the time when real leadership rises to the moment?

Trump failed the test. Please remember his incompetence in November.

If we can make it to November.”

With everyone out celebrating in huge groups, pretending there is no pandemic, there will be 200,000 (or more) deaths by the 4th of July. Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven.
Therefore when thou doest thine alms, do not sound a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth:
That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly.
And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
Mathew 6:1-6

It's no surprise that trump hasn't read the bible, but I do still get a bit irritated when "christians" show everyone that they have never read the bible.
They have their reward

72

Oh and don't forget, Trump is also hell bent on destroying the United States Postal Service, one of the largest employers of veterans in this country.

73

Trump tweets: HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY!!! (like he's happy and having a party)

Meanwhile: The Trump family has no record of military service in five generations, two world wars, and 150 years.

Think about that.

74

I learned something today. Like everything else in this country's history, Memorial Day has been whitewashed. Of course it was the Daughters of the Revolution who did the whitewashing.

ATTN: ‘Union General John Logan is often credited with founding Memorial Day. The commander-in-chief of a Union veterans’ organization called the Grand Army of the Republic, Logan issued a decree establishing what was then named ‘Decoration Day’ on May 5, 1868, declaring it ‘designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village, and hamlet churchyard in the land.’ ⁣

Today, cities across the North and South claim credit for establishing the first Decoration Day—from Macon, Georgia to Richmond, Virginia to Carbondale, Illinois. Yet, a key story of the holiday has been nearly erased from public memory and most official accounts, including that offered by the the Department of Veterans Affairs.⁣

During the spring of 1865, African-Americans in Charleston, South Carolina—most of them former slaves—held a series of memorials and rituals to honor unnamed fallen Union soldiers and boldly celebrate the struggle against slavery. One of the largest such events took place on May first of that year but had been largely forgotten until David Blight, a history professor at Yale University, found records at a Harvard archive. ⁣

In a New York Times article published in 2011, Blight described the scene. While it is difficult to pinpoint the precise birthplace of the holiday, it is fair to say that ceremonies like the following are largely erased from the American narrative of Memorial Day...." ⁣

Here's a Time article on it:

From the New Yorker: "The Coronavirus Hits Brazil Hard, but Jair Bolsonaro Is Unrepentant

As the nation’s rates of infection and mortality continue to climb, the President is behaving with absolute and deterministic irresponsibility," by Jon Lee Anderson.

"Brazil’s President, Jair Bolsonaro, who is behaving with absolute and deterministic irresponsibility. From the onset of the pandemic, he has dismissed covid-19 as a “little flu,” and has insisted on holding rallies and personally greeting supporters, pointing out that “We will all die one day.”

Perhaps taking a cue from Trump, whom Bolsonaro admires, he has attended protests held by anti-shutdown supporters and encouraged uprisings against state governors who support quarantine measures.

In some gatherings, he has been seen coughing repeatedly, though he now wears a mask in public; he was tested twice for covid-19 after an outbreak among his senior staff, but has refused to release the results.

Each day brings a new Bolsonaro-instigated outrage. In mid-April, he fired the respected health minister, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, after weeks of feuding publicly with him over measures to protect the public.

The President later explained his action by saying, “Mandetta’s vision was that of health, of life. Mine is more than life, it includes the economy, jobs.”

A week later, on the same day that Brazil’s death toll from confirmed coronavirus cases exceeded five thousand, he asked a reporter, “So what? I’m sorry, but what do you want me to do about it?”

Bolsonaro is not only not doing anything about it; he has actively campaigned against efforts to control the pandemic, arguing that quarantining people and stopping economic activity will turn Brazil into an impoverished “African” nation.

In fact, Brazil’s social and economic inequalities were well advanced before covid-19, and redressing them was not a top priority of Bolsonaro’s government."

Like two pees in a pod, Bolsonaro and hair Furor (trumponaro?) they give Zero Fucks about the Lives (or Deaths) of the Citizenry they were hired to Protect and Serve.

And they call themselves 'the Patriots.'

Time for a shake-up, America.

Just like the trolls here.

Shit bags who eat and spread shit because that's all they are and all they have.

If you're wondering whether some good percentage of the too-stupid-to-be-real Twitter accounts demanding America end shelter-in-place orders despite a still-raging pandemic are, in fact, too stupid to be real, the answer appears to be yes. A new Carnegie Mellon University study estimates that about one-half of the Twitter accounts pushing that demand and COVID-19 conspiracies in general are bots. They're fake.

Imagine having to live with knowing someone like this in real life? What sad, horrible lives they must lead.

Internet "trolls" — people who intentionally incite discord in online communities — may have a lot in common with real-life sadists, new research suggests.

In two studies conducted online, researchers examined personality traits and the online commenting styles of 1,215 people. The investigators found that Internet trolls tended to have personality traits related to sadism, psychopathy and Machiavellianism – a term used by psychologists to describe a person's tendency to deceive and manipulate others for personal gain. The link between trolling and sadism was the strongest out of all three traits, the researchers said.

Coronavirus is being weaponised by online trolls.

Time and time again we’ve seen internet trolls climb out from beneath their dingy bridges to hurl abuse with a keyboard.

Every time a troll posts, it's doing exactly what is expected of them. No one is shocked. No one is surprised. It's just the same shit, every time, with every troll.

Trolls are just as predictable as Trump rage tweeting. Congratulations, you are the same as a syphilis riddled, obese, demented and deranged shit bag who can't spell or speak or even stand up straight.

Your posts are the equivalent of Trump's twenty flush dumps.

Every post who YOU are and the nastier you get the more you reveal yourself.

JFC, is that really true? That actually staggers me, just using my own family as a baseline and thinking of all of the people I know, their families.

89

@88,

Seriously! It's bizarre to acknowledge but I really think he benefits from the sheer abundance of disparaging things that are continually being revealed about him personally. Like, it's just so taken for granted that he's an abhorrent and disreputable human that new revelations and examples of said disreputability and abhorrence are dismissed or otherwise ignored out of some sense of idiot over-saturation and complacency.

KAGA

90

@89 mike, that's the sad truth.

91

Typically, the left repels against military service. So it is rather amusing that they feign outrage over the Trump family not having a military service history as if that would augment anyone's opinion of him. It's not that notable. There are probably other families that have such a distinction and there's no reason to assume that they're not pleasant people.

I mean maybe in some strange pocket of Amish, Mennonite or Quakers back in the hills of Pennsylvania?
I dunno, maybe you're right and my family have been the suckers and every family I have ever come in contact with are the suckers as well. Perhaps you have entree into that world where all the draft-age males were shielded from service and it is not uncommon.

Outsiders tend to think the U.S. military is made up entirely of blood-and-gut conservatives, à la John Wayne, but there’s little real evidence to back that up.

Regardless of personal political persuasion, all members of the military do not care for leaders who have not served their country (so they felt equally about Romney and Obama, regardless of who they were going to vote for).<<<

At the time, however: The Center for Responsive Politics reported last month that self-described military personnel had donated $678,611 to Obama, 85% more than the $398,450 the Romney campaign has collected.

@94: I don't need any irrelevant data as my point is valid, though an opinion. I never heard of anyone making an issue over a such a thing, but such pastimes are popular now in some circles to find tangential things to ruminate over regarding Donald J. Trump.

97

The Increasingly Dangerous Politicization of the U.S. Military

Since Trump is disrupting all sorts of other norms about how U.S. presidents should behave, it may not be surprising that he and his administration are smashing the norms of military nonpartisanship as well. But the repercussions of these actions are enormous, because they fundamentally threaten the future effectiveness of the principal institution upon which the nation’s security rests. During military crises, the country’s senior military leaders must be able to deliver trusted, objective advice to elected officials. Those military leaders are the nation’s exclusive experts on the conduct of war; there are no alternative sources of tactical and operational expertise that decision-makers can rely upon. If their advice comes to be seen as compromised by partisanship, the nation’s elected leaders will not be able to objectively assess their military options, and their life-and-death decisions about when and how to use force will suffer immeasurably as a result.

Reversing the increasing politicization of the military needs to be a high priority for both the Pentagon’s civilian and uniformed leadership.

If only trolls knew how to properly spell Barack Obama. Oh wait...

Clinton and Obama did not serve, that is true. Members of their families did, though, unlike Trump's family which has avoided any form of service for one and a half centuries. Who here said they did? Oh yeah, NO ONE. And a really salient point, neither Bill Clinton nor Barack Obama lied to get out of serving their country the way Trump did and brag about it ("what am I stupid, I wasn't going to Vietnam").

And while serving as Commander in Chief of this country, neither Clinton nor Obama repeatedly (as Trump has) denigrated people who have served or (like Trump did) created a charity claiming to help vets and then pocketed the money for themselves.

They also did not take money appropriate for major projects meant to improve the lives of active military personnel (who live on poverty wages and most of whom are on food stamps) to build a wall that he promised his racist supporters that Mexico would pay for, but hey, keep on trolling, trolly troll.

Oh yeah and they never once used the military as a prop, demanding a parade through Washsington D.C. like they were a dictator, the likes of Kim Jong-Un or Vlad Putin.

And they did not avoid going to services to honor servicemen who gave their lives because it was raining and would mess up their hair.

Nor did they order West Point Cadets back to D.C. during an international pandemic so they could give a speech no one wanted to hear (while exposing every single graduate to COVID-19).

@103 he did NOT serve. The last President to see combat was GWB's father.

George W. Bush suspended from Texas Air National Guard, Aug. 1, 1972

According to his military records, Bush never flew again as an Air National Guard pilot after April 1972. He received an honorable discharge from the Air National Guard in 1973 to attend Harvard Business School.

Some opponents of the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq subsequently equated Bush’s stint in the Texas Air National Guard and his Harvard deferment as evidence that he had maneuvered to escape the draft during the Vietnam War.
