For Sticker Patrol purposes, I think your interpretation of the javascript stuff is perfectly fine.
It might be somewhat more accurate to say that the sticker is saying that we should generally act as if there is no gender (the default value being, null meaning nothing).
We could certainly do some serious geekery here, perhaps around the differences between undefined and null, but really... I think the gist here was more than adequate.
That said, I am curious as to what that filename translates.
