Here I was expecting to read an account of yet another silly leftist internecine turf battle, but it isn't like that at all.
People all seem to be behaving pretty respectfully towards each other. BLM might just come out of this ordeal with its prestige enhanced rather than diminished.

3

I demand Kshama Sawant resign and move to a farm where she can run free forever.

These are super-reasonable, aside from cutting SPD funding. I get the intent, but we're already wasting money on excess overtime, and it's clear SPD is understaffed.

Ending the curfews is also the right thing to do. We've now had several mostly peaceful protests that have been dubiously labeled as "riots" with excessive police force in response. There's a danger that the demonstrations will start to become a response to how the police are handling the demonstrations, and I don't see how that's going to end well. SPD will never be able to recover their reputation with the community if they continue along these lines.

Body cams should not have the ability to turn off. The data from them should always be transmitting to a server that is managed by a civilian review board, not the police. Stop allowing police to investigate themselves.

I love how white people think they have a right to demand how Black Lives Matter operates and demand that they "behave" without absolutely no irony at all. BLM was started in response to the murder of Michael Brown. The protests happening now are in response to endless police violence and murder of black people, culminating in the latest murder, that of George Floyd (that happened right after the murders of Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor). The cops who murdered Breonna Taylor while she was sleeping in her bed are still walking around free.

The protests and demands are not about telling black people how to be. Why this has to be explained is beyond me.

Right now white people need to shut up unless they are telling other white people, demanding the immediate dismantling and destruction of white supremacist terrorism in this country, of which police brutality is only one part.

White people do not get to dictate how black people respond to the endless and relentless brutality of racism they experience. They can be allies and walk beside them and listen.

Beyond that any and all demands on how black people and any and all organizations formed by black people for black people are run or what they do is none of your fucking business as a white person. If that is all you have to contribute, sit down and STFU.

Well said, @ #6.

  1. I love the way you think! I have found that almost all of Sawant's ideas are incredibly stupid/impractical/too far to the loony side of Left. I have found her "sawanting". Ha! See what I did there! I'll be here all week, folks.
10

@6 I would be angry that you would think you have any right to tell anyone how they should operate regardless of the color of their skin, but then I remember you are crazy and harmless and the anger passes right away.

"...the police department, which has received nearly 12,000 complaints of alleged officer misconduct over last weekend alone, though 11,000 of those complaints reportedly refer to a single incident of a cop allegedly pepper spraying a kid."

Why is SPD mandating parents bring their children to peaceful demonstrations if they are planning to pepper spray them?

Doesn't make sense.

13

@10 re-read your comment and get back to me. then read comments one and two. oh and calling me crazy is just lazy trolling. thanks for contributing today to the donation fund (actually black lives matter thanks you). troll all you want. i'll donate more.

14

@13 Donate all you like. It doesn't bother me a bit. I believe black lives matter just as much as mine does. But telling me how I should think and act doesn't gain you anything but my enmity.

15

@14 Every time a troll crows, the Stranger loses $, donated to a better organization. This place is turning into more and more of a cesspool. I have nothing against you, you came at me.

Disagreeing with a comment I (or anyone else) write(s) is quite different from personal attacks. Particularly the ever popular troll go to of calling people crazy.

You calling me names gets $ donated away from this blog. To date $800 donated away from the Stranger because they refuse to clean up their comments section.

Your enmity is irrelevant.

The Stranger refusing to moderate their comments section will continue to contribute to their demise.

17

@16 the murder of black people by cops has nothing to do with the murder of black people by black people. it's already been posted, in other comment sections here, extensively, how these two things have nothing to do with each other.

over 90% of murder of white people is committed by other white people. care to do some fake hand wringing about that?

18

@15 I don't care.

20

@16 10 huh? There are not official numbers kept by anyone so where did that number come from? Per the information below (provided by people trying to get an official count) it would be 240 (no designation of armed/unarmed or circumstances). And there are likely far more given there is a lot that goes on that never sees the light of day.

Last year, more than 1,000 people were killed by police, according to Mapping Police Violence, one research group.

Black people were disproportionately among those killed, the group found. Black people accounted for 24% of those killed, despite making up only about 13% of the population.

@19 Name calling is not dialogue or a difference of opinion. And I don't agree that German Sausage is "on my side." There are plenty of people who post here with whom I disagree. I typically don't respond to their opinions. It is false information and misrepresentation of facts that bother me here. Opinion is not fact. So many people seem incapable of understanding the difference.

The instigators and hateful trolls on this site love calling people all sorts of nasty shit. Calling someone crazy is hateful gaslighting. I am not crazy. I have strong opinions. I am also a huge proponent of facts. No one has to respond to my comments and those that do without personal attacks are worth attempting a dialogue with. Swiftress didn't like my comment so she decided to call me crazy. There is no value in that.

There is less and less intelligent commentary here. There is less and less constructive conversation. There is a fuck ton of nastiness, trolling, misinformation, and blatant lying, though. And that has nothing to do with thinking or reason of any kind.

23

xina, would you like to have another glass of wine dear?

@20
African Americans make up 13% of the population, yet represent 26.9% of arrests per FBI. Maybe that bridges the gap for you as to why they would make up 24% of your statistic. Iā€™m sure itā€™s not their fault they were arrested though.

Since The Stranger has a statement from BLM-Seattle King County, Iā€™d love to see a statement from #BlackLivesMatter Seattle Action Group, AND if possible, a statement from a representative of the global BLM, as well as Black Liberation Movement, since none of these are affiliated with BLM Seattle King County.
Iā€™d love to be able to read from a multitude of voices behind the BLM movement, even if they are linked articles from other media sources. Iā€™m asking that from the white journalists at The Stranger. Letā€™s all help educate each other with compassion in mind.
