Wow, CHOP is starting to look like the IRL equivalent of a Slog comments thread. OK, now that I've gotten that cheap and easy quip off my chest…

Scary line from The New York Times's COVID-19 news scroll (https://www.nytimes.com/2020/06/22/world/coronavirus-live-updates.html#link-1641efbb): "Yakima County has more than 6,300 infections, nearly as many as all of Oregon."

Regarding officials believing the Yakima County spike "to be increasingly driven by what happens outside of the workplace, where masks are often not worn in stores and elsewhere, and holiday weekends result in case counts spiking"—are we not seeing much the same behavior pattern here in King County?

I caught Dow Constantine on KUOW last week giving a mealy-mouthed, pass-the-buck answer to a question as to why King County wasn't mandating masks. Rather than be reactive, I think Jay Inslee has to get out ahead of this situation and extend the masks mandate statewide. It seems like we as Americans and even Washingtonians have forgotten the basic idea that "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure," and now our elected officials and public health officials have to walk around in abject fear of our collective stupidity.

@2:

No worse than foie gras and Moet shits and coke spoons scattered about the sink...

4

So is this three shootings or three reports of the same shooting?
I wonder if this could be gang-related.

The Chop has outlived its usefulness. Last week Donald Trump signed an executive order calling for a nationwide database of police misconduct and for de-escalation certification for police officers. That's a very good start, and we should all get behind getting these things implemented. Cal Anderson Park has turned into a homeless encampment, and I don't like it.

6

@5 Donald Trump should also call for an end to the homelessness problem and then that problem will be solved too.

7

There should always be some Pride attendee with a sign saying, "The gayest man here is always the one bashing homosexuality" while standing near the anti-gay protesters. Next to the attendee should be a group of people yelling at the anti-gay protesters, "Stop thinking about anal sex! Stop thinking about anal sex!

8

@2 They are prepared to clean that shit dumbass. It's in their contract to be hygienic otherwise they wouldn't be in business in the first place. I wouldn't want the job nor use those things. But King Co HD is no doubt monitoring this.

We did Giovanni's Room for my English 100 class at Seattle Central. I especially liked the discussions involving Beyonce.

As an old progressive, I offer a lesson for young progressives:

Racism in the past:
No matter how qualified Black, Hispanic person, she/he will not be accepted into colleges.

Racism today:
No matter how unqualified a Black,Hispanic, she/he will be accepted into certain colleges.
No matter how qualifed an Asian, she/he will be rejected for certain colleges.

Do not be surprised if Democrats lose 80-90% Asian votes in the election, leading to another term for Trump. Elections are won and lost on a small percentage of swing votes. Discrimination against Asians creates a lot of swing votes.

As for CHAZ, if the Mayor, Governor, police don't shut down the chaos, I think they are deliberately trying to help Trump's election.

13

@7 -- Love that idea. If anyone ends up doing this, send me pics/vids!

14

Cops do not exist to prevent shootings, gun regulations do. Acts of violence have occurred around Capitol Hill in the past and they will continue to. They especially happen around this time of year because yokels start showing up and start mixing alcohol with guns.

15

@12 OK, I'll bite: Let's have a list of these colleges that don't have any qualified Asians in the student body.

17

As the saying goes; The revolution eats her young!
@12 - I don't think Mr Andrew Yang will be voting for Trump.

18

@6: The city has always kept the homeless from residing in our park and recreations areas for decades. Would you write the same snide comment about homeless escapements around Green Lake?

19

@14, that CHS post also ran a picture of some white guy running through the area with a high-powered de-escalation tool in his grubbies. I would have taken him for a right-wing interloper, but the CHS caption says he's part of the show.

20

@18 I have no idea what (if anything) to do about CHOP. Fortunately, I don't need an opinion on that because my cunning has let me avoid becoming the Mayor of Seattle. My general attitude towards the whole thing is "they're immune to your consultations, they're quite aware what they're going through".

My comment was in reference to the suggestion that Donald Trump's signature on a piece of paper solves the complex of problems that triggered the protests in the first place.

21

@20 - my bad.

22

"Do not be surprised if Democrats lose 80-90% Asian votes in the election, leading to another term for Trump. Elections are won and lost on a small percentage of swing votes. Discrimination against Asians creates a lot of swing votes."

Oh sure - because trump is so nurturing to Asians. If you're a "old progressive", I'm the Queen of Romania.

25

@12 I suppose you think all Asians are good at math too, right? The reality is, Asians are the most diverse minority there is, both economically and academically.

Take it from another "old progressive": I was ripped to shreds last year on the ST comments board and elsewhere for supporting affirmative action as good for Asians as well as other people of color. The harshest blowback I got was for contending that any Asian American's privileged status, no matter how hard they may have worked for it, is contingent on white perception of them as a "model minority" and if that seal of approval is lost, everything else goes with it, therefore Asian Americans are much better off standing in solidarity with Black and Latinx communities than aspiring to white privilege. We are now seeing exactly that scenario play out as Trump fumes about the "Kung Flu" and his moron minions mindlessly attack random Asian and Asian-appearing American citizens in cities nationwide. I doubt that's going to earn Trump any of their votes.

The situation in Yakima proves how Inland Washington can never be independent: All economic activity there is reliant on either the Federal Government or the largess of Western Washington. There's neither the brains or the economic base to make "liberty" (the proposed 51st state) successful. It would be the western version of Appalachia.

28

"why is it always white Christian men in their 20s and 30s?—who are so consumed with thoughts of gay sex that they drive all the way to Seattle from Yakima or wherever the fuck to hold up signs and call people faggots. Where do they get the time for this? Well, you know what they say about homophobes: The "research suggests that some who oppose homosexuality do tacitly harbor same-sex attraction."

Abso-fuckin-lutely! It's a bunch of confused, self-hating white guys who are up to the old Nazi trick; i.e., shoot one of your own to prove you're not one of 'em. BeGone, hateful weirdos, you have no power here!
