"We need a direct line of communication to Trader Joe's HR."

"Store #130 needs to make a meaningful financial contribution to Black-led organizing of the crew’s choosing."

Sure if they want to, philanthropy is always optional.

3

"no guarantee that the workers' demands will be met"- no shit.

4

To quote Bill Lumbergh "yeahhhh, that would be great"

Where's your Salsa Authentica now?

List of demands through the door? Seriously? If the black workers were treated differently than the white workers there are legal means with which to pursue that. If that’s the case they should use those means. There is also a point to be made about diversifying the workplace. I’m not seeing how the other items on the list are related to their employment situation.

It’s odd to me that the only POC in this photo are hidden in the back. Meanwhile front and center is a white employee making the demands and decrying injustice...

The article says:

"In an email, a spokesperson from Trader Joe's says the company supports crew members' rights to organize 'so much so that in a March letter we promised Crew Members that if there are 30% of Crew Members in any locations who want to have a union vote, we will.' "

But that is not really what the March letter said, for it added the loophole/proviso "when this current period of unrest has settled down."

"In a March 31 letter sent from CEO Dan Bane to all employees... Bane concludes with a pledge: 'When this current period of unrest has settled down, if there are 30% of the Crew Members in any store that tell us they want to have a union vote... we will.' "

Never accept corporate PR at face value.

HAHAHA!!! THEY'RE ACTUALLY SERIOUS!!!

" I DEMAND THAT YOU GIVE ME BACK MY SHITTY JOB IN YOUR SHITTY WORK ENVIRONMENT EVEN AFTER YOU HAVE BEEN PAYING ME NOT TO WORK AT MY SHITTY JOB IN YOUR SHITTY WORK ENVIRONMENT!!! "

Imagine having to supervise these people! Meeting every demand would sate them for a full 5 minutes, but only if they are given a 15 minute break after notification.

13

I admire their gumption - nobody gets anything if they don't ask for it.

All you hecklers and vice signalers should be ashamed of yourselves.

14

@13 - You admire their passion but not their message? I guess you qualify as 1/2 a heckler.

15

Unless you have a union your "demands" mean less than nothing. Especially in today's economic climate.

16

I like that trader joes and the people that work there have always been pleasant, but after reading the article a second time, fucking fire the lot.

17

Theft prevention is a reasonable goal for a retail establishment.

18

"Captains" and "mates"? Gag me with a fucking spoon. I had heard "crew members" but had never realized it was this specifically nautical twee shit.

20

OMG that sign language dude. I want to ride him this very second!

Been meaning to donate to The Stranger for a while and finally just got around to it. I love Jasmyne's professional, objective coverage of Erin, Trey and Rose's righteous rebellion against their corporate overlords.

Very indicative of young peoples' mind-set: everything is about them. They think a grocery store chain who's sole aim is to make a profit will close down a store in retaliation for employees political beliefs. Hahahahaha.

If they wanted to really punish you, they'd fire you and find a reason within their code of conduct to justify it.

Young people these days are really dumb, which is fascinating given how much access to information they have at their fingertips.

@24:

And that's why you still live in your mom's windowless basement...

These people don't realize how much less money they will make in a union. And their benefits won't be as good. And they wouldn't have been able to go to the March that they were allowed to go to. They just don't want to do their jobs and they should be terminated at once. Everybody who has ever worked for Trader Joe's in this region knows how awful the night employees are there: petty, lazy and ignorant. Also, Trader Joe's: next time think about what saying Black Lives Matter gains you and what not saying it loses you. You created too much drama by trying your Switzerland approach and by releasing a toothless statement. The fact that a crew member was killed by the Cops two years ago at Silverlake and you still can't condemn Police Brutality is an embarrassment. Own these mistakes and fire those children when you reopen the store.

Glad to see that BIPOC are vocal advocates for a safe working space at Trader Joe's. Can't believe all of the yahooz commenting here!
