Isn't that about average for Seattle in July though? I mean, nobody moves to Seattle to bask in the sunshine.

It's funny we only talk about trump being all law-and-order when Seattle's mayor is the one wielding the city's police force against its residents. This shouldn't be surprising though considering she's a former prosecutor endorsed by SPOG.

I stand by my confident assertion that Team Shithead's gonna lose big come November, though I feel like his "strategy" is coming to light. Re-open (and keep open) the economy as much as he possibly can in hopes of seeing positive numbers on that front. Sure, Covid cases and deaths will explode and multiply, potentially exponentially. But his base was always selfish and delusional anyway, and a few positive stock market & employment reports, in tandem with the ongoing dog whistles toward racism, proud displays of ignorance, and prototypical depictions of dems as Soviet era commies should be all they need to convince themselves to give him another term. Combine that with some strong armed "Keep Out the Vote" tactics, and he could stand a reasonable chance of winning, perhaps even comparable to that which existed in 2016.

speakin' of Roarin' Back!
(and it AIN'T the Economy, stupid)
this, from the NYT:

Virus Spiraling Out of Control in U.S., June Data Show

The U.S. is heading into a holiday weekend after setting single-day case records five times in little over a week.

If June was the month the pandemic spiraled out of control in the U.S., July may show how bad it can get.

On June 1, Florida officials announced 667 new coronavirus cases. On July 1, they added more than 6,500. Today they reported over 10,100, a record.

In Texas, there were 1,100 new cases at the start of last month. On Wednesday, more than 8,100. In Georgia, it went from 700 to 2,300. And in California, where some newly reopened businesses were again being shut down, new cases went from about 2,500 to 7,600.

If June was the month when the coronavirus pandemic spiraled from America’s grasp, July seemed destined to be month when the country will learn just how bad it will get.

The United States reported nearly 50,000 new coronavirus cases on Wednesday, the fifth single-day case record in eight days, as the nation staggers toward a holiday weekend burdened by a pandemic that is only growing worse.

Ohio, Kansas and Louisiana, all of which looked stable not long ago, posted some of their highest single-day totals in weeks. North Carolina, Tennessee and Texas set single-day case records on Wednesday.

Unemployment here is still about 30%. Some industries like entertainment and convention and meetings are nearly 100%. Doesn’t look to get any better for several months and even then estimates are as high as 25% of those jobs won’t be back for a couple of years if ever. The shows producers just permanently laid off 80% of the staff and they aren’t expected back for at least a year. These unemployment numbers will be used to spin the economy as good and end the additional unemployment and provide “proof” that a payroll tax cut for business is the better alternative.

The CHOP was an organic consequence of the protest and not a movement. There was no leadership. The so called demands were unreasonable out of the gate. They aren’t taking 50% of the police budget. That was never going to happen and there are no specifics offered as to how to do that. Not prosecuting all protesters isn’t going to happen. There were several violent arrests. For the misdemeanor non violent arrests I could see that happening. In fact they should have never been arrested in the first place in most cases. Working with authorities is more than posting some demands on a barricade and online and sitting back an waiting for them to arrive.

26

The Maxwell arrest came out of SDNY, the same office Bill Barr tried to take over a couple of weeks ago. Legal experts have some interesting insights.

28

@17,

Not even sure what you're whining about this time, but if it has to do with the historical value of statues, I can assure you that people learn history by reading books and literature, attending live performances, watching documentary and other films, and attending lectures given by knowledgeable people.

Though I suppose if you were to reveal that the bulk of your education came from staring at inanimate bronze plated objects, it'd explain an awful lot.

31

So what happened to the big "black power" fist sculpture? I thought it was really cool, and should have been kept there (or somewhere else).

32

seatackled @ 26
Yes, makes me wonder if Maxwell will also be placed in an old, no cameras jail and following Epstein will end up "committing suicide."

35

Every time I read about someone defending a confederate statue, I think of the ideas expressed really well in this editorial: https://www.burlingtoncountytimes.com/837efa5e-2a94-5e8b-bc4f-bad31c127014.html.

36

Remember the rule:

See a confederate or slaver statue, tear it down.
See a confederate flag, burn it.

Repeat as needed.

37

@33 points out the problem. The media (TV) mostly pays attention to the suburbs, who have exactly zero (0) votes in Seattle. Shoreline gets zero say in what we do.

Our Mayor is working for people who are never going to vote for her. Our City Council works for people who will definitely vote for them, because they live in Seattle.

Don't like it?

Move to Moscow. Or Beijing.

38

@31 if the city was smart they would display it somewhere. Everyone seems to love all the Burningman sculptures around Reno.

39

@32- I am sure that Trump has already scheduled her suicide.

40

Re sawant- the rest of the council probably didn't want that unhinged lunatic and her fetid toadies showing up at there homes. Fuck sawant.

41

@14 Not only are deaths trending down, hospitalizations are as well. In King County the death and hospitalization rate has been approximately 0 per 100K residents for over a month, despite the spike in cases among younger age groups. The number of hospital beds occupied by patients with COVID remains around 2%, compared to ~10% when the pandemic began. It's almost like hospitals are in no danger of being overrun as long as we isolate the vulnerable populations...

Here's the source for those numbers: https://www.kingcounty.gov/depts/health/covid-19/data/key-indicators.aspx

41

44

@24,

Ha ha, Herman Cain! It's crazy that his name conjures up a memory of a guy who seems like he was in the public spotlight decades ago. In light of that, maybe @17 is right. We should probably build statues of all these shitheads lest we forget who any of them were or their contributions to society. I saw a cartoon recently that had a depiction of Steve Bannon and I barely recognized him! He should probably get himself a monument down on the National Mall, maybe next to the Vietnam Vet maseterpiece.

48

@44 I'm no scientist but I think we would see the hospitalizations increase with the positive cases in tandem if there was a corollary effect.
@46 I focused on King County specifically because states and counties were hit with the virus at different times and at different rates. King County was the first where it began being diagnosed. We saw it begin with nursing homes, but now we're seeing its effects among the rest of the populace, with different results.

49

@45 It's not about the left or the right though, it's fear based propaganda and both parties indulge. I choose to follow the numbers and make my own assessments.

50

@49 are you following the numbers today? Washington just set a one day high of new reported cases. +700.

51

How do you pronounce Ghislaine anyway?

53

@50 No, I used the currently available data according to King County's website. As I mentioned though, the case count has may not correlate to the number of hospitalizations and/or deaths though.

54

@53 Sorry, I can't edit my post:
@50 No, I used the currently available data according to King County's website. As I mentioned though, the positive case count may not correlate to the number of hospitalizations and/or deaths.

57

@56 Arizona is where people go to retire, you can't compare it to the cities where people go to work. The age makeup of the population is vastly different.

i'm here to give my testimony  about the good work of  herbal doctor who cured me from herpes virus , i know you all won't believe what i'm saying i was cured from herpes virus just with in 7 days i thought that they was never a cure to this deathly virus not until i meet Dr Gabriel he gave me instruction on how to take his herbal medicine which i did and i followed it carefully to make sure everything goes right just as i was instructed to. One comment from today's Paul Krugman’s article in the NYT, "Trump’s Virus Is Spreading, and His Economy Is Stalling

The president leads a transition to sickness."

“It is no longer possible to deny what a horrible, dysfunctional country we have become. There are a great many admirable people and institutions here, and some things that we do very well, but the level of unyielding racism and bigotry; gross and growing income inequality, the stigmatization and mistreatment of the poor, the sick, and the vulnerable; the tolerance for gun violence; and the existence of a major political party and associated media ecosystem that routinely lie, deny the obvious, and strive to divide and inflame make me ashamed to be an American. Our allies, or former allies, now look upon us with pity and disgust, and with good reason.”

69

@65 - it's well known that deaths lag new infections (appears to be a 3-week or so lag. Sadly, the national death rate is poised to go way up in a couple of weeks, based on the number of new infections we've seen in the South and Southwest. Only a matter of time. So get what mileage you can out of your "declining death rate" while you still can, because those days are numbered.

More, from the NYT:

"A Cheap, Simple Way to Control the Coronavirus

With easy-to-use tests, everyone can check themselves every day.
Simple at-home tests for the coronavirus, some that involve spitting into a small tube of solution, could be the key to expanding testing and impeding the spread of the pandemic. The Food and Drug Administration should encourage their development and then fast track approval.

One variety, paper-strip tests, are inexpensive and easy enough to make that Americans could test themselves every day. You would simply spit into a tube of saline solution and insert a small piece of paper embedded with a strip of protein. If you are infected with enough of the virus, the strip will change color within 15 minutes.

Your next step would be to self-quarantine, notify your doctor and confirm the result with a standard swab test — the polymerase chain reaction nasal swab. Confirmation would give public health officials key information on the virus’s spread and confirm that you should remain in quarantine until your daily test turned negative."

"Once they are provided to all, employers would likely require their workers to take time-dated pictures of their negative test results before coming to work. Colleges would require students to do the same before coming to class. Restaurants could accept reservations only if accompanied by negative-test pictures. In short, everyone will have an incentive to test themselves daily to participate fully in the economy and return to normal life.

Once paper strips’ efficacy is definitively proved and they are cleared by the F.D.A., Congress can quickly authorize the production and distribution, for free, of a year’s supply to all Americans. Then we’ll have not only a true day-to-day sense of Covid-19’s path. We’ll also have a far better means to quickly contain and end this terrible plague."

Happy Birthday, America!

More trumpf vs. [most of] Humanity from the nyt:

“Trump Uses Mount Rushmore Speech to Deliver Divisive Culture War Message

Down in the polls and failing to control a raging pandemic, the president cast himself as waging battle against a ‘new far-left fascism’ that imperils American values and seeks to erase history.”

“In response to Mr. Trump’s event in South Dakota, Andrew Bates, a spokesman for Mr. Biden’s campaign, said in a statement,

’Our whole country is suffering through the excruciating costs of having a negligent, divisive president who doesn’t give a damn about anything but his own gain — not the sick, not the jobless, not our constitution, and not our troops in harm’s way.’”

“We Socialize Bailouts. We Should Socialize Successes, Too.

Governments have spent trillions in tough times without creating structures that turn short-term fixes into a more inclusive economy.”

“When the economy is in crisis, who do we turn to for help? Not corporations — it’s governments. But when the economy is flourishing, we ignore governments and let corporations soak up the rewards.

This was the story of the 2008 financial crisis. A similar story is unfolding today. Governments have spent trillions on stimulus packages without creating structures — like a citizens’ dividend, which would reward public investment — that turn short-term remedies into the means for an inclusive, sustainable economy.

This gets to the heart of what fuels inequality: We socialize risks but privatize rewards. In this view, only businesses create value; governments merely facilitate the process and fix “market failures.”

The coronavirus crisis offers a chance to change this dynamic and demand a better bargain. But to do so, we must redefine the concept of value itself. Until now, we have confused price with value — and that confusion has propelled inequality and warped the role of the public sector.”

Lookit what came in the mail:

"Dear kristofarian

Here we are, in the midst of the worst public health crisis in more than 100 years.

As you read this, the number of COVID-19 cases is skyrocketing in this country to levels far greater than at any point in this crisis. The United States — with just 4 percent of the world’s population — accounts for 25% of the world’s coronavirus cases and deaths.

And the Republican Senate is doing nothing.

We are in the midst of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression of the 1930s. Over 30 million Americans have lost their jobs, many have lost their health insurance and families across the country are struggling to put food on the table and not get evicted from their homes.

And the Republican Senate is doing nothing.

From coast to coast, hundreds of thousands of people have taken to the streets to demand an end to systemic racism and police brutality and murders. The fight for racial justice is accelerating.

And the Republican Senate is doing nothing.

The temperature in Siberia recently reached 100 degrees, sea levels are rising, and scientists tell us that we have just a few years to move aggressively away from fossil fuels if we are to save this planet for our kids and future generations.

And the Republican Senate is doing nothing.

Meanwhile, in the midst of these unprecedented crises, not everyone is hurting in America, not everyone is worrying about how they will pay their bills or feed their families.

While more than 32 million Americans have lost jobs during this pandemic, the grotesque level of income and wealth inequality grows even wider as more than 600 billionaires have seen their wealth go up by $565 billion. Jeff Bezos, the world's richest person, has seen his wealth skyrocket to nearly $172 billion as Amazon's stock soars.

Sadly, in the midst of all this, we have a "stable genius" president who is clearly incapable of doing the job required during these crises.

He denies science, and as he does the pandemic spreads.

This is a president who thinks the coronavirus will just “disappear” and that he has a “natural ability” to understand this deadly virus. It will not, and he does not. As a result, people are dying every day because of his lies and incompetence.

As you know, I have brought forth a number of initiatives to protect our people during this unprecedented moment in modern American history.

These are ideas that the American people support, and it is time that the do-nothing Senate implement them. But this I know: nothing will happen unless the American people stand up, fight back, and demand, in overwhelming numbers, that the Senate act.

So before the Senate returns from our 4th of July recess, I would like my colleagues to hear from you.

Sign my petition: tell Senate Republicans that they must step up and pass legislation to protect the health and economic well-being of the American people.

That means:

Passing the Paycheck Security Act.

Passing the Emergency Health Care Guarantee Act.

Providing $2,000 emergency payments to every working class American until this crisis is over.

Saving the Postal Service.

Extending the $600 a week increase in unemployment benefits.

Canceling rent and mortgage payments until the pandemic ends.

Making sure no one in America goes hungry by substantially increasing nutrition assistance programs.

Manufacturing and distributing high quality masks for ALL through the Defense Production Act.

So today, I want to ask you to do something important — to make your voice heard on these issues before my colleagues return from recess. What do you say?

Sign my petition: tell Senate Republicans that they must step up and pass legislation to protect the health and economic well-being of the American people.

Thank you for making your voice heard.

In solidarity,
Bernie Sanders."
