This does sound like a ground swell of support against Mayor Jenny until you stop to consider the membership of these "Democrat" orgs nowadays. The 43rd is Democrat in name only and has been fully assimilated by Socialist Alternative. They went so far as to change their endorsement bylaws in 2019 so they no longer have to endorse an actual democrat and surprise they endorsed Sawant with 70% of their vote. The 37th isn't far behind. A member wrote an op-ed during the last election cycle encouraging them to change their bylaws as well but since they didn't get to it in time they endorsed no one in District 3 and Tammy Morales in District 2. The same Tammy who was a card carrying member of Socialist Alternative until she was called out on it by Durkan and then issued the lame excuse that she was just checking it out (of course since being elected she has voted lockstep with Sawant 99% of the time). The 36th actually still has some real Dems left however they endorsed Moon in the 2017 election so not exactly a bastion of support for Durkan. There is no way Durkan is going to step down on her own accord so most of this is moot however I just wanted to point out how worthless these org's have become as any indication of mainstream democratic voter sentiment. It's been 6 weeks now since Sawant said she was going to submit articles of impeachment so when is someone going to ask her what the hold up is? If she had followed through on her commitment this could have been over by now.

The next mayoral election is in 2021. I'll wait for then to vote for a new mayor.

This is why you never elect a former prosecutor for a higher political office.

Prosecutors operate with no oversight or accountability and are rewarded and promoted for being sociopathic liars. No other political office rewards unethical behavior the way being a prosecutor does. By comparison they make regular police look accountable.

Durkan has been told repeatedly the public wants to defund the police 50%. As a prosecutor she has paid to laugh at the will of the people, but she is a mayor now. If she is unable to honor the will of the people, she needs to go.

I used to work with Mayor Durkan as a lawyer years ago. I gave her the benefit of the doubt and figured the turnabout on tear gas was the police giving Durkan the finger and showing her who's boss - heck the police gave everyone the finger including a federal judge. But her reconsideration of the recall essentially says "I have the power but not the duty to control the police." Well, it is IMPERATIVE that police be under civilian control by elected officials so I can't tolerate or support out of control police actions like teargassing after it was prohibited by her now being called a "reasonable" decision of the police chief by the mayor. We need a mayor willing to take responsibility or blame the police, not refuse responsibility and call police reasonable.

Nobody was calling for the ousting of mayors during prior riots like the WTO because of the tear gas. We should extend Durkan the same courtesy.

The entire Seattle City Council should resign. Sawant first.

Her argument means that the police are not under the control of an elected government, which only turns things into a much, much larger problem.

@19, I'm actually kind of glad the cops are accountable to rather than in control of the elected government. For example, I'm much happier Trump's control of the FBI is that he can hire and fire the guy who can hire or fire the director of the FBI. You can imagine what kind of abuse could take place if whoever is in power actually controlled the cops. Actually, you don't need to imagine it, you can see it in some places, and the results are way worse than the cops overusing tear gas.

I think Sawant and other city council members that initiated CHOP’s formation then did nothing but spin the truth when it went wildly off the rails and ended in violence should also resign. Teenagers died and a neighborhood was terrorized by warlords, paramilitary groups and meth head anarchists for three weeks because of them. There heads should roll in addition to Durkan’s.

@11 -- I'm with you. Nothing she has done rises to the level of impeachment (unlike the last mayor).

The only reason she should resign is if she can't do her job. This is a possibility, given the hostility between the council and the mayor (so much for "Seattle nice"). But again, that is nothing unusual (it is common in other cities). When it comes to most issues (e. g. the West Seattle bridge) it seems like the council and the mayor are working together, even if they aren't on the same page. The only exception is police funding. The two groups are at loggerheads. But that should work itself out over time.

I'm not fan of the mayor, but at this point, see no reason why she shouldn't finish out her term. It is highly likely I'll vote for someone else (hopefully González). Unless, of course, it is like last time, and someone completely unqualified is running against her. Even then, I'm not sure what I would do, since I've lost all confidence in Durkan.

I'm not a big Durkan fan, but I daresay Sawant has been using Durkan as a scapegoat more than the other way around. And the entire council, especially Herbold and Gonzalez, have done this. There's what to criticize in Durkan's administration of the city and in her response to the CHAZ/CHOP, but SCC members should look in a mirror long and hard before broaching impeachment proceedings against, or supporting a recall of, Durkan. And I think many Seattleites think so, too, no matter what some Democratic district council recommends.

Why would she resign? She's done a decent job. It's not her job to stick up for protesters nor succumb to the cries to defund the police, again from a minority of citizens of the city. She supports the needs of the many, not the few. Protesters need to get over themselves.

So, a group of Democrats -- who are really Socialist Alternative operatives, and therefore speaking under strict orders from the Executive Committee of Socialist Alternative -- got real pissy when their connection to CM Sawant was noted? Thank you for confirming their voices are not in any way independent.

The rest of us will continue to ignore them.

I'm out of Seattle City Council / mayoral / King County voting jurisdiction, but nonetheless did my civic duty by casting my mail in ballot today. Everyone vote in the Primary Election by August 4, 2020.
