Your dripping sarcasm about Seattle Charles showcases your panic.

2

How lonely sits the city that was full of people!....
Is this the city which was called the perfection of beauty, the joy of all the earth?"

3

Is The Stranger going to do any reporting on what efforts (if any) WA is undertaking to secure our state's election, in the face of mounting interference from the Federal Government? Feels like this is an opportunity for this paper to contribute positively by raising awareness and putting some Fourth Estate pressure on our state's elected officials.

I'm trying to prepare to take the necessary steps to ensure my vote is counted. For example, right now I plan to use a local drop box to return my ballot. But this depends on the USPS delivering the thing in time. Also assumes no fuckery from the US government trying to reduce / eliminate / invalidate drop boxes.

If you haven't heard of Quincy then you probably haven't checked out the Ancient Lakes near there. Definitely a site to behold.

Good Morning Charles,
Couple of things. First of all, I quibble with your observation that Seattle is a "dishonorable city". A filthy city, yes. Specifically the business district. But dishonorable, I'm not-so-sure of. I recently went DT to ride the free KC Water Taxi to get to West Seattle. En route, I discovered a wasteland. From roughly, 3rd and Virginia to Pioneer Square and the streets flanking that corridor, it looked, sounded and smelled like a city in decline. Boarded up buildings with human waste & trash in front of them. It was teeming with homeless and others recently indigent. Granted, it is summer and in the mist of pandemic COVID but still. This is the worst this area has looked in my 25+ years of residing here. Most unfortunate.

Regarding Carmen Best's resignation, I don't know that she deserved to resign. However, she along with Mayor Durkan and the city council deserve strong criticism for their handling of the demonstrations this late spring/early summer. CHAZ/CHOP should never have happened. While I wish her, Chief Best good luck, I believe she was in over her head. This summer has been a disaster for the city and she along with Durkan and the City Council are held accountable.

Yes, this weekend weather bodes hot. However, if there has been any silver lining in this terrible spring/summer for the city of Seattle, it actually has been the weather. It has been spectacular with relatively clear skies and comfortable temperatures. It has been nicely cool the past week especially. It is now mid-August. After this weekend, I don't believe it will get much hotter at least, for an extended period the rest of the year.

11

@10, agreed. We need an income tax, but we = WA.

12

The SPD's budget hasn't even been touched yet. Why would the cops be gone off the street right now?

But you know, if Amazon did start putting some jobs out in Bothell, that might relieve some of the pressure on housing stocks in the city. Maybe. The whole problem, these last 10 or 20 years, has been people moving into Seattle faster than the market can keep up. If we're going to rely on market forces to provide housing, we have to acknowledge that the supply is not infinitely elastic.

13

@10, I agree. The state should get on that.

15

@14 had I been addressing you directly, I'd have put an @10 in the post. But I wasn't. I was responding more to stuff in those links Mudede posted. The one about the closing tea shop in particular.

Sorry for the confusion. I should have been more explicit.

16

But my point more broadly is that all these articles about the calamities befalling Seattle will go on and on about Police Reform and the Council and Carmen Best then somewhere mention in passing the pandemic and its associated economic devastation.

The tea shop article is particularly weird in this respect.

18

A Mudede morning report is a uniquely happy occasion.

20

17: Well, for the 40 years of history I've lived here, it's never been this bad (IMHO).

21

Amazon is doing that because people don't want to move to Seattle because it is so expensive. They are doing it retain and obtain employees who want to live somewhere where they get to keep more of their money (but is not in rural West Virginia). It's a smart move on their part and it just might return Seattle to a more livable and affordable city when Amazon is not the primary presence.

To all who say this is about taxes, clearly you are not paying attention to the fact that Amazon is still going into cities like New York (where people pay city and state and federal taxes), so keep on believing this is about taxation. It's about people not wanting to live in Seattle.

22

@20 There's never been months of a general closure of retail business because of plague, either.

It just seems so bizarre that people will talk about these issues and say "yeah, sure, pandemic blah, blah but lets gripe instead about that Kshama Sawant". Its literally scapegoating a natural disaster.

23

The thing that really pisses me off about all this is the misspelling of foreword.

25

Oh hai Slog, good to see you.

@10 - The make believe fairy stories you’re using to confirm your shitty biases sure are something to read.

@16 - Exactly, as if the two things existed in separate universes and one couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the other. Because when has a 30% unemployment rate and virtually no government support brought anything but social harmony right?

@24 - This is satire, right?

28

@24: The masks are working. A better question to ask is 'So are people being responsible or is the pandemic getting worse?'

30

Welcome back Pridge

34

@29,

I'm sure you've got some manner of point to make buried in there, but that analogy isn't remotely ironic. Alanis Morissette would cringe at that take.

36

@20 -- A few years ago I happened to stumble upon a Garfield High School reunion, taking place outside. I introduced myself, and mentioned that I too, graduated from Garfield. The woman -- class of 1970 or so -- asked what class. I told her 1980. She replied, and I quote: You're just a baby.

With all due respect, Phoebe, you're just a baby. We are in the midst of the worse recession since the Great Depression. It has also occurred during the biggest pandemic since 1918. Do you really think Seattle is any worse than any other city? The fact that downtown looks pretty damn good is shocking, really. Back in the 70s, Seattle was still a rough and tumble town. Ballard was rough. Downtown was sleazy. Read Still Life with Woodpecker again, and see if First Avenue comes even close to what it was then.

This too shall past. Eventually we'll immunize folks. Eventually things will get back to normal (whatever that is). Unless of course, Trump gets reelected -- then we are fucked.

37

36: If only we had the rough and tumble to deal with - you're making us nostalgic. Still, I love Seattle and there will be better days ahead - as you said this too shall pass.

38

Take the Seattle Underground Tour (someday), you'll learn about when Seattle used to dump all its shit into Tacoma.

39

Free Ballard

41

I’m getting nostalgic thinking about the time a certain former Stranger writer got on the wrong bus and ended up in West Seattle, which they assured us, was not “real” Seattle.

The good ol’ days.

42

It’s never been this bad? I paid $300 a month for a studio in pioneer square back in the day. I think one of Shawn Kemps kids lives there now.

46

@41:

Inga Muscio?

47

@3: The ballot drop boxes are safe from the vagaries of the US postal service. If you don't receive a ballot via the post, you can request a provisional ballot. And if you fear federal interference with drop boxes in certain neighborhoods, no problem. Just drive over to a rich, white GOP area and drop your ballot there.

48

@41

Sou deshou? If it's too hard to compete, why are you a survival-of-the-fattest capitalist?

49

@40...

50

@46: Inga Muscio! Holy crap I haven’t thought about her in YEARS! Lordy that girl could rile people up. She was the Herzog of her time :)

56

@51, @52, and @54: Whoaaaaa. Calm down, lil MAGA troll. Your unhinged ranting suggests your Trumpty Dumpty cap's on too tight, and you've got a butt crack deeper than the Grand Canyon. Take some deep breaths and try not to fall into it.
By the way, if you're worried about fumes. maybe lay off the cheap beer and pork rinds from the Dollar Store for a while.

57

Every single person in corporate America got a survey on work environments and locations. Yes, the mainstream press jumped on it to make a headline. Next big headline, "Man eats breakfast, pets dog, ..."

58

I completely agree with your assessment of Seattle. Personally I’d add even more. The mismanagement of money, the state economy, the housing, the laws, the police force, the riots even the plandemic has destroyed the city. Possibly to the point many businesses there will nvr recover. The city has little to none of chance of bouncing bk if voters keep voting in Democrats. They have always spent (or misplaced) way more money than they had in budget. Not to mention most of their projects were over budget with little success or completion. The protesters demand a few things I kind of agree with, then some in my opinion are totally stupid. You need a strong police force, but a good police force. Guess who monitors and corrects those things... that’s right your mayors and governors. The very ones letting people destroy your city then letting them go without charges. Have allowed a system that isn’t get rid of the bad officers. They are letting street terrorist destroy your home... your city.
If someone’s ex girlfriend chunks a brick through their window “protesting” her unhappiness... she gets arrested and charged. Plus she’d hv to pay the damages. Now if during her “protesting” she throws an object and hits you or sets fire in your front yard... she being arrested, charged and will see a little jail time. If you file a p.o. And she shows up and starts “protesting” again she will be arrested and jailed. AS IT SHOULD BE. ANY BLM, ANTIFA or whatever kind of protester does any of the mentioned things THEY SHOULD FACE THE SAME CHARGES. The second a protest is considered a riot and you’re told to disperse it’s like a P.O. for the law bidding citizens... if protesters don’t leave they should be arrested and jailed. Ex girlfriend breaks into your house steals somethings, spray paints your walls... she should be arrested and put in jail. SAME FOR “PROTESTERS”
Some how the law bidding citizens have forgotten this is their town too and their crazy ex boyfriends/girlfriends (metaphorically speaking) keeps getting away with many crimes against them.... over and over again. Then add to that chaos the criminals needlessly being let loose bk into the public. I hope the citizens wake up and vote the Democrats out....
As for the gentleman worried about secure elections. That’s already in place.... it’s called IN PERSON VOTING. Stop falling for the false narratives. Riots and protest went on for many weeks without a huge “outbreak”. It was only when people started pointing it out (several times past the incubations period) that the narrative was pushed that cases started going up. There seems to be a lot of people that need to work on their critical thinking skills... get past the programmed hate and anger and actually look at the bigger picture.
