Counter-protesters forced the vigilante caravan to seek alternate routes simply by stopping one or two cars and putting their blinkers on. Sounds like they're a hell of a lot more effective than the Portland cops.

The easiest thing would be to stop allowing people to open carry, but nooooo that is too fucking logical. Because crazed assholes (on both sides) with guns will DEFINITELY make things better as people get more and more riled up. Of course any Black people open carrying will simply be shot and killed by the police.

I participated in plenty of demonstrations back in the day, and whenever a few people started bashing windows (or heads), the rest of us would rapidly move away~ so as to not be associated with the mayhem. What's going on in Portland? Have peaceful protesters just left the scene, leaving it to the violent few?

I dunno man. Have you met many Americans? I'd be pleasantly surprised if you went 1-for-3 there, though I genuinely admire your optimism.

The State monopoly on violence ultimately serves those with less power. When that basic bedrock of civilization collapses, it is those that are most vulnerable that will bear the most risk. That monopoly is based on raw power, but also trust. The Portland Police squandered both. The Federalized troops dispatched to Portland squandered both. The Portland Police need to be disbanded and replaced with an organization that can carry legitimacy. There have been far too many violent clashes in Portland with few charged for assault. All those that fired paintballs, all those that sprayed mace, all those that used their vehicles as weapons, all those that hit someone not in self-defense need to be arrested and charged.
