If anything, there has not been ENOUGH shaming of people going to nightclubs and parties. It is pretty clear that putting a bunch of people indoors in small spaces is the worst thing you can do, and when they are all drinking/shouting/flirting etc the transmission potential is even higher.

Having colleges bring everyone back to campus now is questionable at best. Bring a lot of people from all over the country together and put them in close proximity. What could possibly go wrong? It's kind of like a Sturgis rally for people who can read. But if they decide that they absolutely have to do that, then FFS at least try to minimize the consequences.

Having a bunch of uncontrolled spread at parties, college or otherwise, is going to set recovery for the rest of us way back. How about we just don't???

16

@1 Or maybe people just took her at her word.

Citation needed for what "most black people" thought.

17

@7 - dead on (no pun intended)! The "open it up" crowd simply does not give a fuck how many people end up dead.

18

@9 True enough - kids should be able to party. But they should also not propagate the Covid. Tragedy is when two rights make a wrong.

19

And speaking of wildfire danger, how about we make the campers in Woodland park put out their goddamn campfires? Putting up your tent in the middle of a trail is one thing (although i will say the crowd there is a hell of a lot better about not throwing trash around than the dirtbags next to the freeways), but running the risk of burning the park down is a whole 'nother level of problem. Not like it is cold outside. Knock it off.

@21 - spoken like one who is (perhaps over-optimistically) pretty sure he won't wind up in the 600k. And there will be millions dead in other countries too by the time this is done so yes, the world is kind of burning.

24

College 'kids' aren't kids... they are adults. Grow the hell up. Cramming dozens and dozens of people into small spaces, no masks, during a pandemic, to party...is essentially negligent homicide right now... for whatever person they end up passing infection to days later, or the chain of transmission they start that ends up killing COVID-19 victims. Even those who suffer mild illness are showing evidence of lingering neuro and cardio damage... at all age groups, with or without pre-existing conditions. Have some goddamn personal accountability and hunker down.

25

@20: Except dinning in restaurants practicing safe distancing, procedures, and wearing masks.

37

And another thing: "Bellevue is pretty much Seattle" seems to ring true except that the "hinterlands" descend upon The City, suck out whatever they want, then slink back to the alleged safety of their outlying residences. The Bellevue Amazonians will still cross the bridges for better recreation and gasp if they see a city dweller in their weekend markets.

I'm familiar with this trend since I've lived on Bainbridge Island for forty years now and many say The Rock is just a suburb of The City. People conflate their "home" depending upon their audience ("I live in the Seattle area" if they want that identity, or "I live in the Puget Sound area" if they don't....)

45

I think the troll quality is really starting to decline here. The pandemic must be getting to everyone. Even Duck Fart is just phoning it in with his feigned ignorance, lame whatabouts, and weak slaps at Democrats.

No word on the execution of that kid in Lacey last night? Twitter was all a-twitter about it. I kind of expected something here. Can't wait to hear more of that story.

Seems like everyone is just holding their breath until November. We're all pretty sure everyone is going to vote for Biden. I think the only outstanding question is, will it matter? Trump already has his goon squads roaming the streets, and clearly the police are fine with that. Pretty sure Trump is just going to declare victory no matter what the outcome. Anyone have any idea how that's going to be handled? I have a few ideas, but they're cynical and involve Congress just agreeing right before the Democrats are all arrested.

57

"If our leaders can't fix the virus, what's so bad about throwing parties?"

"The government isn't fixing it so why should I have to not do literally whatever I want?" F that, this is so self-evidently trash, garbage thinking. It wasn't so long ago that I was a college student, so I have a pretty good memory of the fact that we were dumb but also beings with agency who could, indeed, easily and simply choose not to do stupid, selfish shit that endangered others' lives. Government incompetence doesn't somehow absolve young people from a moral requirement to follow public health guidelines and not be fucking selfish. Wtf.

My state HAS good guidelines in place, it's doing fairly well w/r/t testing (which does 0 to prevent spread without effective contact tracing & quarantine compliance anyway), there is not much left for the government to do aside from heavily utilize law enforcement to MAKE people comply with the restrictions and contact tracing in place. Which we don't really want!

If people, everybody, adhered to the restrictions, kept the businesses closed that are ordered to be closed, wore their masks and limited their home gatherings, and DIDN'T GO TO COLLEGE PARTIES, things would be under control. Wahh, Trump didn't take it seriously, therefore we shouldn't tell everybody risking others' lives to STOP IT YOU SELFISH BRATS? Nahhhh.

58

@8 - if you think field hockey is safe, you've clearly never seen it. It's not safe in regards to coronavirus and it's not safe in general. I think maybe because it's something women play in this country (it's not exclusively a women's sport elsewhere in the world) you assume it must be dainty and gentle. It is, in fact, rough and tumble and gritty and mean, even when the players aren't sociopaths like @13's ex-girlfriend.

59

@54 -- yeah:
Now do the Drunk Driving one.

oooh wait -- I think I may have it:

If ya don't Drink

Mr Toad -- is it truly you?

61

Its misleading to say jobs were added. Jobs may have been recovered but we are still in the hole several hundred thousand. Winning!

62

@29 "mostly white women" forsooth. You mean all two of them? Is that really such a large population that generalization is useful?

And FYI, Elizabeth Warren's claims to Indian heritage never influenced her career. That's pure Breitbart Extended Universe fantasy.

You're fulla shit.

63

The spread of COVID will continue and just get worse and worse as people continue to do whatever they want to do. Being incapable of doing what is needed to be done (what should have been last January) will only perpetuate all of the suffering and loss (of health, life, finances, etc.) By the time this is over this country will be so decimated in every possible way (and Trump will be dead) that we will be a third world country and the rest of the world no longer regard us or deal with us in any way, whatsoever. It's gonna be great.

66

The interplay and dynamic between Mehlman and Prof History has got to be one of the more entertaining elements of the slog these days. They should get themselves a political debate show on Seattle cable access or something. Or maybe The Stranger could facilitate a streaming zoom political broadcast for them. I'd watch the crap out of it. Who would we want to have moderate in order to maximize entertainment value... Charles? Amanda Knox? Phoenix Jones?

They could also have periodic special guests like Raindrop, fax2 or Kristofarian on, either to spur additional debate or maybe as panel fill-ins. I've never been much of a debater, but would perhaps offer my services as an occasional guest host, as needed...

from today's nyt:
The Service Economy Meltdown

As companies reconsider their long-term need to have employees on site, low-wage workers depending on office-based businesses stand to lose the most.

"For this army of service workers across urban America, the pandemic risks becoming more than a short-term economic shock. If white-collar America doesnā€™t return to the office, service workers will be left with nobody to serve."

"A lasting change in the behavior of the high-wage layer atop urban labor markets would have an outsize effect. Many service jobs that held on in the face of globalization and widespread automation may not survive."

ā€œ'I donā€™t know what a less-skilled worker does in West Virginia,' said Mr. Glaeser, an urban economist at Harvard University. 'If urban service jobs disappear, the whole of America becomes like West Virginia.'"

From comments on the NYT's article
The Service Economy Meltdown:

The dirty little secret is that many of these jobs and many of these businesses are NEVER coming back. America has way, way too many restaurants. Way too many shopping malls, way too many stores open too many hours and way too many office buildings.

Companies are figuring out they do not need to be open 18 hours a day and seven days a week. They do not need to have people "come to work" when they can accomplish more, in less time, working remotely.

There is a massive restructuring coming whether or not any of us like it. I don't think that either Trump or Biden has the slightest clue how to manage it.

We are going to need to rethink the entire concept of "work." Health insurance MUST be divorced from a job. Yang's "freedom dividend" is looking better everyday.

76

okay, one more comment from @74:

COVID-19 is merely the precipitating event; the rot in our system is the fundamental problem that was destined to fail sooner or later.

We need major reforms, including a return to a truly progressive tax system as we had during the best years the middle class ever knew from the late 1940s through the 1960s, universal healthcare, a universal basic income which is included in total taxable income so that the well-to-do have to pay it back, but with high enough personal exemptions that the poor do not.

Rather than scrambling to pass short-term stimulus bills, we need a permanent safety net which automatically expands during a crisis and shrinks during more prosperous times, sized to meet the current needs.

We've banned exhaling on our Fellow Man but that'll never stop the Sociopaths with their Rugged Individualist's Demands of Freedom to Inflict.

What do you propose, Bikey?

81

@66 mike blob, we're all here for different reasons and entertained by different things, so this isn't meant as a knock on you, but I respectfully disagree.

I enjoy the Prof's posts very much, but Duckshit doesn't deserve the attention. That's what trolls crave. If everyone would just ignore him, or at the very most leave it at an insult (without engaging in his asinine comments), we'd be better off. You're not teaching them anything by explaining what dumbfucks they are. That's what makes Duckshit, Raindrip, Biker McFuck Face, and David in Dumbfuckistan trolls - they don't give a crap what it is you're saying... their only aim is to troll you.

Itā€™s like watching the exact same episode of a tv show day after day after day. The episode is entertaining the first time, maybe the second or even third time, but after a hundred times and counting, not so entertaining anymore.

82

p.s. sorry to the trolls I didn't include - I wasn't intentionally leaving you out... you're dumbfucks as well.

83

@75,

In 2017 drunk drivers killed less than 11,000 people, which comes out to less than 30/day. If we can bring our covid death rates down that low then I'm pretty sure you'll be able to frolic on merry-go-rounds to your heart's content.

87

Ha ha, the ol' posthumous claim that you were only joking or posting in jest the entire time. That's called pulling a gorath and it was pretty expertly executed. Well done!

This is all meaningless.

Presuming that the Red Trumpies and young folks continue their behavior and don't start ALL WEARING MASKS AND PHYSICAL DISTANCING we're looking at (checks IHME UW projections in Sept. 3 news release) 463,000 to 964,000 US dead of COVID-19 by the end of 2020.

So, keep pretending it will get better.

@92, given they are going to force children back to school (mostly) nationwide, I bet we are looking at much larger numbers than projected. This article seems pretty conservative.

I actually was told otherwise, that the herpes can not be treated and that there is no way to make it go away once you have it. But I decided to do my own research and found out it is possible to fight it.. I got a lot of information about it here in forums and online,I got Dr Oje Abacha contact on a group were a man from Cordova was sharing his testimony of how he cured him of herpes so I decided to give him a try I emailed him through oje.herbalsolutioncentre@gmail.com . he called me to know if I actually wanted the cured after which the cure was sent to me few days later I was surprised when the same doctor who told me that I was diagnosed of herpes told me that I was completely free from herpes you can reach him through his email oje.herbalsolutioncentre@gmail.com . or through his WhatsApp +2348159734766 if you are diagnosed and also wanna be free from this deadly virus because he is really gonna be of help to you
