No Charles, you can't upstage the anniversary of the 9/11/2001 terrorist attacks with a historical footnote.

From Corporate-free News, this, from Amy Goodman’s brilliant Democracy Now:

Barbara Smith: The U.S. “Functions with White Supremacy as Its Engine.” Here’s How We Dismantle It

Since the police killing of George Floyd in May sparked a nationwide uprising against police brutality, armed white supremacists have taken to the streets of U.S. cities in response to Black Lives Matter protests.

Organizing against systemic racism has been met with apparent attempts by the Trump administration to cover up white supremacist violence.

We speak to legendary Black feminist scholar Barbara Smith, founder of the Combahee River Collective, about her proposal for an antiracist program called the Hamer-Baker Plan — named for Fannie Lou Hamer and Ella Baker — to eradicate white supremacy in the U.S.

“I’m not just talking about white supremacist groups or organized white supremacy,” Smith says. “What I’m talking about is a system that actually dictates and shapes every aspect of life in the U.S.”

Here’s what’s actually happening:

Speaking of Nine Eleven, one more from America's Favorite NON-Corporate News Orgnization:

Costs of War: After 9/11 Attacks, U.S. Wars Displaced at Least 37 Million People Around the World

As the United States marks 19 years since the September 11 terrorist attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people, a new report finds at least 37 million people in eight countries have been displaced since the start of the so-called global war on terrorism since 2001.

The Costs of War Project at Brown University also found more than 800,000 people have been killed since U.S. forces began fighting in Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Pakistan and Yemen, at a cost of $6.4 trillion to U.S. taxpayers.

“The U.S. has played a disproportionate role in waging war, in launching war and in perpetuating war over the last 19 years,” says report co-author David Vine, a professor of anthropology at American University.

Historical Footnote! What the Fuck! Jesus what an ignorant American perspective.

The attacks on 9/11/01 were terrible. About 3,000 people died, with lots more injuries.

But thousands more died in Chile. Tens of thousands of people were tortured. About 130,000 people were arrested. It was terror on a level never felt in this country, before or after the Twin Tower attacks. Constant, persistent terror that permeated every aspect of society. It set back democracy twenty years in one of the shining beacons of democracy in South America, setting the stage for further unrest in the rest of the continent. It sent a signal -- if this could happen in Chile, it could happen anywhere. The left became more radical, and more aligned with the Soviets. Proxy wars were fought in Central America, which lead to gangs, failed regimes, and mass migration (which continues to this day). It ain't no fucking footnote -- it is one of the biggest events in history.

My comment (@7) was a reply to @2.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the biggest problem with Antifa is their name. It is stupid. It sounds like something foreign -- Muslim even -- purposely designed to get the Fox News crowd all riled up. If the goal is really to fight fascism it is a stupid choice.

The American Antifascist League (or AAL) would be a better choice. I also like the John Brown Gun Club. They are actually a lot more militant. But the choice of "gun club" is so smart, and so bad-ass. It is like they are purposely trying to appeal to country folk. Meanwhile, John Brown is also a great choice. He was a (white) abolitionist, but more importantly, if you are an ignorant American (e. g. a Fox viewer) it just sounds like a nice, American name. You can just imagine someone (from the West) thinking "Well, I may not agree with them all the time, but they gotta right to do what they're doing". In contrast, those same people are thinking "We gotta stop those Antifa terrorists, who are invading our towns".

Names matter. That is why it took fucking forever for Black Lives Matter to get accepted, even though "Black Lives Matter Also" would have been understood immediately, and had widespread appeal from the get go.

11

7 - You're right - footnote was the wrong word.

12

Meanwhile in Kansas City, thousands of white Chiefs fans booed a couple dozen Black men linking arms in the name of social justice last night, then performed a racist "war chant" to cheer on the men they had just booed.

13

More Americans have died of COVID since Monday than died on 9/11. Preventable deaths that would not have occurred had our callous and incompetent commander-in-chief not chosen to deliberately mislead the public about the dangers posed by the pandemic in its early days.

Never forget.

16

ZOMG! Amazon is ABANDONING SEATTLE, just like the RWNJ's, er highly prescient conservative SLOG commenters have predicted from the beginning!

Let's see: 180,000 feet square abandoned divided by 13,700,000 total square feet of Seattle office space owned by AMZN equals 1.2%.

Yep, no doubt about it. Bezos is totes stigginit to teh Seattle libruls, for sure...

20

@9, yep. It’s also why “defund the police” has stirred up so much rancor.

22

Of course mockery of his stupidity only fuels his base’s belief that they are the victims of persecution by the “elites,” just like sane denials of QAnon validate their dismissal of “fake news.” The bald-faced hypocrite finds justification in everythi g he sees and hears.

24

Trump does not care that the west coast is burning. Oregon is almost entirely Republican (other than Portland). Will the people who lost everything, who voted for Trump, vote for him again? He clearly does not care if they die. He will not be sending any federal help because he believes he has the right to not do so (because he does not understand his job of SERVING THE PEOPLE, ALL OF THE PEOPLE in this country). Trump and his administration and all of his enablers and supporters are a death cult. Will the Oregonians whose entire towns and everything in them that have been reduced to ash continue to follow their leader into the depths of hell and kill themselves by voting for him again? I really want to know. I want to know how far this goes. I mean if they ARE willing to vote for him again, why did they run from the fire in the first place? (Same goes for all of the Republicans in WA state who are watching their towns burn down - will they change their minds or continue to vote for their own deaths)?

25

As for 9/11, how dare Trump even PRETEND to honor anyone? His administration has been stealing from the 9/11 fund for 4 years now, he considers anyone who dies for their country a loser and a sucker, and he has literally murdered 200,000 Americans. Oh and don't forget, Osama bin Laden's niece is a BIG TRUMP SUPPORTER! Fuck yeah, 'MuriKKKa!!! He should have hidden in the bunker all day. In fact they should redo the bunker like whatever room he spends all of his time in (it's not the Oval Office) and tell him he won the 2020 election and keep him there for eternity.

29

Happy 9/11 aka RepubliKKKan KKKristmas!!!

On this day, we celebrate the previous grotesquely incompetent, lying, dipshit RepubliKKKan preznit, CaliguBush, who proceeded to launch unfunded, trillion dollar illegal wars of aggression that killed a million innocent people, displaced tens of millions more, created ISIS and its offshoots, and wrecked the eCONomy for the next decade.

Now we’ve enjoyed 64 9/11s year to date, the eCONomy has collapsed into a pandemic-induced depression with no way out, we’re all effectively under house arrest, and we’re enjoying a racist dicktator terrorist attack from that abusive imbecile Prezinazi AntiChrist and his shitbag Despicables that worship him as their white trash Messiah.

Tick tock, mutherfuckers : )

39

Never forget:

Last Republican President:
Terrorist attack on US soil
Decades long wars initiated
Total economic collapse

Current Republican President:
Nearly 200k Americans dead
Total economic collapse
civil unrest and violence

44

Good Afternoon Charles,
Well clearly, the world is ….pausing! I read this the other day and got a chuckle out of it. @28 & @30, you might get a kick out of this too:

https://spectator.org/trump-nobel-nomination/

Pres. Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize! Yes, a Norwegian member of Parliament, Christian Tybring-Gjedde has nominated him. I don't think Trump will win but still, it is fascinating. Enjoy the pausing of the world. Have an ice cold beer! Cheers!

46

@45: Can you spell Libya? Most people can.

47

The trolls do so love celebrating death. Pretending that millions of people suffering due to wildfires (unprecedented wildfires, despite wildfires being an annual occurrence on the west coast - especially when 4 of those wildfires are known to have been started by people) are of only one particular political persuasion is pretty fucking stupid and ignorant (but again, trolls).

Oregon and WA and CA may go blue, but they have millions of residents and many of them are Republicans.

Cheering on death and destruction is solely a Republican activity. They pretend to be outraged by 2 Ebola deaths under Obama's watch or 4 deaths in Benghazi or the deaths that occurred on 9/11, but do not care about 200,000 dead Americans due to COVID, countless deaths in this country due to other illnesses (which they love to point out and yet never address the lack of access to health care that is the number one cause of these other deaths), or the lives taken by mass shootings, white supremacist terrorism, murder by cop, or guns in general, etc.

The GOP is a death cult. Period. Pretending otherwise is denial of reality (which is of course their specialty). What is so confusing is their continued disregard for the lives of the very people they need in order to remain in power. If they murder their own constituents and make it impossible for the ones who live to vote, what exactly is there long term game plan? (Don't worry, that's a rhetorical question).

50

Trump doesn't need to start a war. He has done more damage and caused more death and destruction during his time as resident of the White House than any foreign war would have. If another country had done what Trump has done to this country (oh wait, I guess they have, through Trump), we would be at war with them. Instead, Trump is their primary asset, and the GOP are his secondary assets. Trump will have succeeded in killing more Americans and causing more catastrophic economic loss and destruction within the United States than any war we have ever been involved in in any way ever has (and that includes the Civil War and WW2).

52

Osama binLaden launched 9/11, in part, to bankrupt the United States.
Seems like we've done a pretty good job of that all by ourselves!

54

Doug Grafe, chief of fire protection at the Oregon Department of Forestry, said that Oregon has never experienced "the tremendous loss and destructive fire nature" that the current wildfires have unleashed on the state.

55

@ 52,

Osama called the US a paper tiger that would disintegrate when challenged, so CaliguBush, Prezinazi AntiChrist, and their GOPnazi voters decided to prove him right by carrying out a national murder-suicide.

Consider yourselves owned libtards!

57

@28:

Yeah, that's like saying "we've always had pollution - live with it", because a few hominids 2,000,000 or so years ago learned how to make fire.

My late grandfather was a logger who worked summers on fire lines back in the 1970's. He'd be gone maybe a couple of weeks, and was sent all over the PNW during his stint. But, since the early 1980's the amount of land burnt per year in the U.S. has been increasing steadily and on-average has nearly doubled since 2000 to around 10,000,000 acres per year or about 15,600 square miles - roughly equivalent to the states of Massachusetts and New Jersey combined - and that's while the total number of wildfires per year has actually gone down. So, fewer fires but massively larger in scale compared to 20, 30, or 40 years ago. But yeah, we've always had wildfires - it's no big deal, nothing to see here, move along, move along.

58

@41:

You DO realize you're talking about the GOP plan - the one Moscow Mitch hisself introduced, yes?

Antifa is not a thing, and Proud Boys are organized. By buying in to the nomenclature, they not only obfuscate the anti-fascist wars and anti-slavery defeat, but revive this stupid ass small minded binary thinking and demagoguery. It's used to make people violent and closed minded. You guys are drinking the kool-aid hook, line, and sinker, such that it took on a life of its own and Trump doesn't even need to speak anymore, he has the fanfic running the show dubbed QAnon.

Shut the fuck up and use your brains you hamburger-spined dipshits.

One thing you should know about espionage; it allows countries to get their needs met in lieu of using force by turning key factions of population against themselves, sowing dissent with propaganda, hijacking innocuous social movements, infiltrating unions, and taking active measures. Both sides of the equation (ACAB, MAGA) are being fed Chinese, North Korean, Russian, Iranian, and Turkish trolls worldwide, in Africa, and all over the place, coopting the same relative messages and talking points to bamboozle and piss off the people into doing the same kind of Syria and Operation Ajax crap that has been done over and over since the middle ages because that is the rules.

If you engage with the propaganda that is sent without borders, you are only spreading fear and working for the enemy against American interests by making us less competitive and stunting our own growth. The best thing to do is disengage and pay attention to what is really happening in your own hemisphere before you read someone else's take on it, pretending to be well informed and an impostor. That's what a good spy is. So be skeptical and calm.

Chuck Cooper had a career before mocking Trump online became a thing. She was already an established writer and comedian.

@63 people have been saying ignore the trolls for years. That doesn't work. It did with web forums, but now social media bubbles can create a false consensus for people that the troll worldview is reality.

The recommendation algorithms that power social media favor extremism. Doesn't matter what your extremism is. The system will find what you like and feed it to you until you choke on bullshit.

Anyone from 4chan to the Russians, often working together, can indeed fuck with large numbers of people on Twitter or Facebook. Ain't nobody going to be peaceful and calm come election time. Believe me the Russians and friends are saving the worst of their toxic bullshit for last. They'll provide the gas and Trump will provide the match.

My advice, apart from staying off social media, is to board up your windows and prepare for the possibility people might try to harm you or burn your home down, because when chaos erupts from the far right that's what the stupid on the far left seems to decide is to go-to option.

74

@4 - At last! David in Shoreline openly admits that in his view the "health of the nation" is an ANTI-Democratic, white supremacist regime where vigilante-thugs use pistols, terrorist vehicular assaults, & premeditated murderous violence to enforce their backwards, racially segregationist version of reality, in service of the economic exploitation of other people.
Consensual! (not)
Good Job David! You're a Real American Capitalist[TM] Now.
You unfortunate, ethically-challenged vacuum of hope.

.

"one wonders if Trump is simply playing dumb for his base?"

Yes.
GWBush did the same thing. Eg. His "folksy twang" accent was bullshit, as he actually has a fairly clear Harvard-consistent accent.
Trumpa is very shrewd & cunning when it comes to his personal survival. That's why he ran as an R, because the voter-base is way more gullible to emotionally inflammatory messages.
Trumpo actually IS a moron in other important ways.
He also has no functional empathy, and enjoys hurting people.

.

" "woven fabric can block the aerosols that carry the coronavirus" but not "tiny soot particles.""

WTF?
No it can't. This is opposite the information that has been disseminated by public health organizations.

The virus is veery veeery small. Possibly smaller than "tiny soot particles", but IDK.
NON-WOVEN Fabric is ~far superior~ at blocking the virus' aerosols.
Woven Fabric is Bad: It is woefully full of regular, huge gaps (relative to the virus), and WILL NOT EFFECTIVELY BLOCK the virus-laden aerosols, which, like soot, float in the air for long periods of time.

Medical PPE is made out of NON-WOVEN POLYPROPYLENE.
Most boxy, reuseable grocery bags are made of "100% Non-Woven Polypropylene" (check the tag), and can be repurposed as a filter-layer for your homemade Covid Face Mask.

More Mask Layers Are Better. 3 to 4 layers at a minimum,
with at least ONE being a good Non-Woven material.
(2 layers are Not Enough. ESPECIALLY if they are just woven fabrics (eg. a bandanna alone = bad).)

Stay Safe out there...

75

THNX, for the mask PSA, treacle!
