American education already promotes a ridiculously whitewashed version of our history and lends itself to an exceptionalism that is nonexistent. Nationalism is not patriotism.

2

The 1619 Project is a great perspective on history. The birth year for the United States is 1776.

The two can mesh.

3

At least Hitler had a good idea now and then - like the Volkswagen. Trump's good idea- drink bleach, and get under a light, and make the virus go away?

4

Ah, cool government propaganda as "education." How very American.

Suck it Trump, bell hooks 4 life!

@1

1492- Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

1776- George Washington, with a vision from god, created the 2nd amendment, protecting hard working white folks with guns for all eternity.

1800's- Forward thinking farmers in the southeast US fast tracked immigration procedures for black employees, knowing well they would have a career in football in the coming century.

1900's- 'Merica!!!

2000's The black football players, who had become greedy over their contracts, caused much strife and confusion. So twitler was elected to restore the proper order, making 'merica great again.

THE END.
Class dismissed, final exam next Friday. Please do not omit important dates.

@3 At least Israel, the UAE, and Bahrain have all signed peace agreements so that's something. But one attaboy in a sea of thousands of awshits doesn't do squat.

8

@7 peace agreements among nations who have never been at war with each other are a little anti climatic, especially when they involve arming everyone to the teeth

9

@7
Yes, that is an achievement - the impetus being that the small Sunni Gulf nations will tolerate Israel, since both are against Shia Iran.
I was thinking more about ideas that benefitted Amercan citizens. But I'm not holding my breath.

It was not a "trail of tears", it was a "path of opportunity" !
Treaties signed with native peoples were never meant to be legally binding documents, they were more like 'memorandums of understanding', free to be abrogated or ignored as circumstances dictated.
The Mexican-American War was not one of the largest land thefts in history, but a selfless attempt to remove the shackles from the oppressed peoples of the SW.
The US did not mount an "armed invasion" of Hawaii, it was instead "invited in" to restore order!
Japanese internment during WWII was a necessary response to a concerted effort of sabotage by pernicious 5th columnists!
Mass murder at the close of WWII was totally justified, because do the maths dummy, in the long run it saved lives!

11

@9 Peace is its own reward. Americans benefit from this too.

@7. They are getting Kushner's nuclear plants, numbnuts.

16

@15 Both the UAE and Bahrain already have nuclear plants. So what? If Israel is fine with it, I think that settles the question since they or Iran are the ones who could take them out. Well, Iran could try, but I doubt they would succeed. Israel could do it in a day.

Like everything else, Trump simply does not understand that he does not get to dictate what is taught in schools. This country's refusal to teach ANYTHING about the true history of the coungry is a large part of why we are in this shit show. We, as a society, lie to our children from birth. We teach lies about the creation of this country, the genocide, the slavery, the white supremacist terrorism, the misogyny, the dehumanization of all people other than white men who used violence and destruction and exploitation to create the great wealth of this country. Trump will be dead soon(er rather than later) no matter what he and his minions believe. This country WILL CHANGE or it WILL END. Period. I am so sick of the constant indulgence of his delusional ranting and ravings. He has murdered over 200,000 people and done grievous harm to who knows how many others. He deserves nothing less than to be executed. Period. Along with all of his fellow traitors. Enough bullshit.

18

@10: My ancestry is stained by having a wagon master in that infamous Trail of Tears.

19

"Patriotic Education" BULLSHIT! It's only more MAGA brainwashing.
@17 xina: Again, thank you and bless you!

When I was in sixth grade, we had class on the history of out town. The course materials were developed and distributed by the Union Pacific Railroad, which was the biggest employer In the city at the time.

Predictably, It wasn’t so much about the town as it was about how lucky the town was to have the railroad’s eastern terminus; how benevolent an employer they were, and how - if we were lucky - we might someday have a job with them.

I imagine the “patriotic education” will be something like that.

22

@12
Yeah, you're right.
After re-listening to the Woodward interview Tapes, where Trump shows he knew full well how dangerous and easily transmittable Covid-19 is, now I'd compare Trump to Stalin.
Let the f*ckin peasants die for my re-election!

24

@7 @8 etc - this is all about offshore kickback accounts for Kushner and the Trumps.

Not to worry, we know where the $$ are going, and they will be dealt with.

25

Pen15 is so good. It nails suburban middle-school life on the head.

@3 pat L: I love my beloved classic VW Beetle and must disagree with you on one point in world history. It was actually Bavarian sports car designer, Ferdinand Porsche (b. 1875, d. 1951) of Stuttgart who first introduced and engineered the Volkswagen (German for "the People's Car"). Adolf Hitler had ordered Porsche, and likely against his will, to design and build a mass-produced fuel-efficient economy vehicle for the people of Germany. I'd far rather credit Ferdinand Porsche than Adolf Hitler, Josef Stalin, or Donald Trump for anything good.
